Viyara took a bite of her sandwich, giving herself time to think about that. “I’ve never spend any significant amount of time with any type of art. I mean, I do sketch and doodle a little, but … I don’t know … I never really felt like the arts are my thing,” she mused. Tilting her head to the left, she added after a moment, “Maybe I should give it a try.” She then took another bite of her sandwich and let her thoughts wander for a bit.

Considering Viyara, Janna almost commented, but no, right now it wasn’t necessary. As much as there could be teaching moments in their time together, she wanted in part, to demonstrate what healthy self-care looked like, and being able to separate downtime from work was an important part of it. Even if hers bled together quite often, it was important that some boundaries not be crossed.

It’s been a long day. I’m probably going to read a bit more but I’ll probably turn in soon. Don’t feel you have to go to sleep then too, but do make sure you’re giving yourself a good night’s rest. Tomorrow we have more work to do,” Janna said finally.

Viyara nodded as she finished her last bite of the sandwich. “It was, yeah,” she replied. Despite the fact that this had been filled with physical activities and emotionally draining, she hadn’t felt tired at all. Just as she hadn’t really felt hungry all day. But now that she was sitting her, finally fed, felt a wave of exhaustion wash over her. “I’m starting to feel tired myself. So after cleaning this up I’ll retire,” she continued, lifting her cup and plate.

“Okay, good night, Viyara,” Kingston said, returning to her novel and to the intense scene where Jane helps Rochester escape the fire and he is rather emotional.

Pushing herself to her feet, Viyara made her way back to the kitchen, took care of the plate and glass and then went to her room. After opening the window as wide as possible, but drawing the curtains close, she slipped under her covers and was fast asleep in no time. It was, however, not a deep or exactly restful sleep she slipped in. Instead she kept tossing and turning and even whispered in her sleep. More than once she woke up, feeling uneasy each time and struggling with falling back asleep.

After only dozing off for what felt like short periods of time, Viyara gave up on trying to hall back asleep. At least in this room and in this bed. She knew she could wake Janna, but she didn’t think there was anything she’d be able to do for her. After all, she didn’t know Janna had a hypospray filled with melorazine. And she wanted her to get all the rest she could for she imagined that it must have been an exhausting day for the Counsellor as well. So she quietly slipped out of bed and out of her room. Yet not the conventional way through the door, but through the window as she didn’t want to wake Janna by accident.

After walking around for a little bit, Viyara spotted a canopy swing that looked fairly comfortable. Still feeling very tired and hoping that maybe she’d get some rest out here, she walked over and curled up on the swing. After a few minutes she managed to doze off again.

Janna had retired soon after Viyara, and did a few minutes mediation sitting crosslegged on her bed. Then she slipped under the covers and was asleep within minutes. She did however have a quiet alarm that would wake her in the middle of the night.

When it went off, Janna padded to the kitchen, grabbed a glass of water and noticed the place was quiet and Viyara’s door was closed. And since she wasn’t needed, she went back to her room and back to bed.

In the morning, Janna awoke a little later, clearly needing the sleep. Normally she was up at 0600, but today she found it was already 0813. Ah well! She ran her fingers through her blond curls and moved out of her room and into the kitchen, hunting for coffee.

At some point during the night, Viyara had slipped into a deeper, more restful sleep. She too slept longer than she normally did and when she woke up, the scientist felt rather disoriented at first. Till the previous day’s events came back, including what had brought her out here into the garden in the middle of the night. Sitting carefully up so that she wouldn’t fall off the swing canopy, she slowly rotated her head and then stretched a little before she rose to her feet.

A few minutes later Viyara walked slowly into the kitchen, feeling stiff and tired, wondering how much it would show in her expression and body language. Of course she could put on a wide smile and pretend that she was chipper and well rested. But she didn’t want to pretend around Janna. If that was even possible right now. So she allowed herself to be seen without playing things up either. “Good morning Janna,” she greeted the other woman and leaned against the door frame.
