Janna rose to her feet and offered Viyara a hand. “Are you ready to do some work? I promise it won’t be all bad,” she said with a grin. Breakthroughs appeared differently each and every time, and this would be no different.

Lifting her head off her knees, Viyara followed Janna with her gaze. She hesitated a brief moment, but then nodded as she reached for her hand. Once back on her feet, she realised that she felt slightly weak-kneed. But no matter how scared she was, she wanted to do this. She was tired of fighting to feel okay and maybe this would mean that she wouldn’t have to fight anymore. Taking another deep breath, she said, “I’m ready. Or at least as ready as I’ll ever be, I think.”

“Good,” Janna said, holding Viyara’s hand firmly as much to provide reassurance as stability. And now it’s time to have some fun,” she said lightly, though her grass green eyes were fixed on Viyara. “Computer, what holodecks are currently free?”

Viyara looked at Janna sceptically, one eyebrow raised. But she didn’t challenge that statement.

“Holodeck 2 is currently available.”
“Are there any high priority bookings, including training for the next seventy-two hours?”
“Affirmative. There is a booking at 1000 hours for the Security Department.”
“Cancel booking and reserve Holodeck for seventy-two hours under Doctor Kingston, authorization Kingston-Gamma-Six-Two Sigma-Eight-Purple. Under the same authorization, lock onto my signal and initiate a site-to-site transport to Holodeck, and initiate Code Two-Eighty-Three proceedings.”

Janna never let go of Viyara’s hand, nor would she let her take her hand back… yet.

Grateful for Janna holding her hand, Viyara didn’t even think about pulling her hand away. Let alone try it. Much like the tension ball it helped her stay grounded and present. But unlike the ball it also made her feel safe and reminded her that she wasn’t alone.

They quickly dematerialized from the holosuite and rematerialized in the larger Holodeck 2. Only then, knowing they were both there safely, did Janna release Viyara’s hand.

Janna clapped her hands together once. “Okay! So since we’re going to be here for a couple days or so, let’s make things more comfy. What outdoor setting would you choose to take a nice hike in?”

Of course she knew that 72 hours were three days, but somehow it only now hit her how long they’d be here. 72 hours had sounded and felt shorter than ‘a couple of days’. Taking a deep breath she pushed that thought aside and nodded pensively. “For a hike?” Viyara asked to clarify, “and I assume nothing too challenging?”

With her head tilted slightly to the left, Viyara went through all the places she had been to, whether simulated or real, wondering which one might be best for a hike. It wasn’t often that she went on a simple hike, but suddenly she remembered a place that might be just perfect for it. Though when she had been there during her time at the Academy, she went kite surfing and not hiking. A slight smile began ti tug at the corners of her lips and she said, “Northern Ireland. There is a hiking track along the cliffs from the Giant’s Causeway to a tiny village by the name of Ballintoy. It’s a beautiful place.”
