Janna shook her head slowly. “No apologies. You are allowed to feel whatever you need to feel. No one gets to decide that but you,” she said gently. “Computer, a glass of cold water,” she said and a glass appeared next to her. Janna picked it up and handed it to Viyara.
Taking the glass of water from Janna, Viyara nodded ever so slightly before drinking a few small sips.
“Because we have trust between us, and because you know I won’t do anything to harm you, I’m going to take an immediate step here before we proceed that I believe is vital in you getting what you’ve told me you want for yourself. I know you’re not going to like it, but I’m hoping that the respect we have for each other means you’ll agree to it regardless. Viyara, I need to remove you from duty effective immediately and place you on medical leave under my supervision for the next forty-eight to seventy-two hours. And remember what I said about this not ruining your career? It won’t so long as you can summon some more of the incredible courage you’re showing me right now and are willing to do the work. Can you do that?”

At first Viyara had nodded when Janna mentioned the trust between them. But at the words ‘remove you from duty’ the glass of water slipped from her hand and she gasped for air while a ringing noise began to fill her ears. She didn’t even hear the rest Janna said and simply shook her head ever so slightly while whispering, “No. Please,” over and over again.

The best case scenario had been that Viyara acquiesced and they carried forward, but Janna had known it to be a stretch. Work was one of Viyara’s distraction from her pain and without it she would turn to other things. Which just solidified Janna’s resolve that the Assessment Hold was absolutely necessary. Her hand shot out reflexively to grab the glass, though it did slosh them with water. She set the glass to the side and had the computer remove it and wiped her wet hand on her shirt.
Reaching into her pocket, Janna grabbed a tension ball (never could have too many spares) and slipped it into Nazeen’s open hand, squeezing the woman’s fingers around the ball. The body’s natural reflex would be to squeeze on it to experience the grounding and soothing sensation. With her other hand, Janna grabbed Viyara’s free hand and held it firmly but with care.
“Computer, initiate a Code Two-Eighty-Three, Authorization Kingston-Gamma-Six-Two Sigma-Eight-Purple. And list myself attending to an emergency and unavailable for seventy-two hours,” Janna said, knowing in her heart this was the right thing to do. Not to mention ethically she was required to act if there were signs that Viyara might harm herself.
“Code initiated,” the computer replied. Instantly, Nazeen’s computer access was revoked and she was listed as on medical leave. Her immediate supervisor (the CSO), as well as the CO and XO were notified of the immediate medical leave as well as Dr. Kingston’s unavailability until the 72 hours had passed.
The CMO got a slightly different alert. He was directly informed Janna was attending to a psychological emergency under Code 283 for Ensign Viyara Nazeen. It usually required her to report in to him within 24 hours as to the patient’s status and whether medical intervention was required. It also gave Janna backup should she request it.
Looking around the holosuite, Janna now wished she had booked a holodeck rather than the smaller holosuite, but there was a way around that. For now, she just sat there holding Viyara’s hand and letting the woman process. “Tension ball, Viyara,” Janna said.
