(snip)

That Nazeen allowed her at all was a massive step, even if she didn’t realize it just then. Later, perhaps. Layering more discomfort (out of necessity) over the situation, Janna brought her other hand and with both she cradled Viyara’s hand and wrist in her hands, Viyara’s palm facing up. Her gazed was direct, but not confronting. “I know,” she said softly, finally, but said no more and simply held that hand like it was the most precious and delicate hand that ever existed.

For a brief moment her gaze met Janna’s before she looked at their hands. She didn’t know why, but she felt suddenly a tightness in her chest and started to gasp for air between sobs as tears ran down her cheeks. She wanted to pull her hand away. Hug her knees to her chest. Hold herself together. But she found herself unable to move or do anything but sit there and cry.

With a bit more, but still gentle, force, Janna pulled Viyara towards her and let the woman’s hand go, but only as her arms came to slip around the scientist, holding her in a cradling embrace the way a parent would hold a child. She said nothing that would stop the tears, but her right hand rubbed Viyara’s in slow soothing circles.

At first Viyara made a halfhearted attempt to pull away. Only to find herself wrapping her arms around Janna in turn. Almost clinging to her as if for dear life. It was a long time before her sobs turned so hiccups and her tears began to slow. And even then she stayed in the embrace for a few more moments before she let go and moved into a more upright sitting position again without actually moving away. “Thank you,” she whispered a little hoarsely and between hiccups. “And I’m sorry.” using the right sleeve of her sweater, she wiped her face before pinching her nose and holding her breath in an attempt to get rid of the hiccups.
