This time her reply didn’t come quite as fast, though she still sounded fairly certain when she said, “Yeah, I think so. You are the kind of person who’d do that. No matter who the other person is and whether they deserve to be taken care of and saved or not.” She gave another small shrug and dropped her gaze.

“What about the other officers and crew on this ship? We all swore the same oath to Starfleet and the Federation? Do you believe they too would jump in to help you if you needed it?” Janna shifted her position, closing a little of the space between but not encroaching on Nazeen’s.

Viyara chewed a little on her lower lip for a few moments as she pondered how to answer those questions. Eventually she said, “I think everyone on of the crew would help each other. And I guess that means that they’d help me a well. I think …” She hesitated and started to fiddle with the corner of her diary for a few moments, her gaze fixed on her lap. “I think they’d help me as well. I just … I don’t understand why they would.”

Janna looked at her skeptically. “Come on, Viyara! It’s not difficult- you’re a smart woman, so the answer should be quite simple. We just established that we all swore an oath. If we just let our fellow shipmates die needlessly, that’s negligence. And I know you’re a scrupulous and calculated in your work, so you wouldn’t sit by idly and watch others bleed out, so why would others do so with you? Do you think so little of everyone on this ship?”

Viyara’s head snapped back up and she looked rather taken aback by Janna’s question. “What? No! That’s … that’s not what I meant. I …” she fumbled for words as she felt her heart beat spike. “I just … I …” She shook her head and then suddenly blurted out, “There are more important things they should do than save my life. It doesn’t matter whether I’m dead or alive.” Clapping her left hand over her mouth the moment the last of those words had left her mouth, Viyara curled in on herself and wished she could take back what she had just said.
