The look in Koraia’s eyes deepened and she nodded slowly. She didn’t reply for a long moment, gathering her thoughts, not so much carefully as more intentionally. “I never knew my father growing up, but I knew he was a starship Captain. For many years I would stare up at the stars and wonder about him and in turn wonder about me.” She tapped the leaf-shaped forehead ridge that marked her as at least partly Napean. “I spent my childhood in a tribe that wanted nothing to do with most modern technology, and also really had never encountered telepaths or empaths. When my abilities first manifested it became a bit… uncomfortable. So I went searching.”

Ghubari smiled softly. “We all have our stories. Sometimes they define us, and sometimes they don’t. But it’s what you do with that story that matters.” She gestured to the space at large. “And on a ship like this, these stories collectively make up a community unlike others you may have experienced. The Athena, in its current incarnation, is a legitimate small town. You’ll have your work cut out for you Doctor Daniels,” she said with a knowing expression.

It sounded as if Captain Koraia understood not quite fitting in and the warmth and kindness in the woman’s eyes eased Cara’s own fears. She got the feeling that no matter what happened Captain Koraia would be understanding despite also demanding personal responsibilty. Cara took a deep breath and gave her commanding officer a soft look of empathy.
“One of the reasons I requsted this assignment was because I wanted to work with fellow explorers and people who were used to facing the unknown with something a bit more than just fear and contempt,” Cara said and then swallowed and played with the end of her braid as the thought of what else she needed to say.
“Everyone I’ve talked to speaks about you with high praise and now I see why. I look forward to serving under your command,” Cara said giving Captain Koraia a look of respect. She believed she would be trust this Captain and that went a long way. Stark had been right that this place was going to be a fresh start for her.
“I want to always give this crew my very best. As a doctor patients lives deserve nothing less than 110 percent, I wanted you to know you can trust that will never give up,” Cara added because she thought it was important for the Captain to also be able to trust her, especially when her crew’s lives were on the line.

Ghubari studied Cara intently and silently. Depending on the circumstances, this gaze could be quite intimidating, but if anything was true, it was that Ghubari Koraia was not usually prone to speaking without thinking. “Careful there doctor. Sometimes, knowing when to stop is as important as knowing when to push through. But you’ll learn that… in time.”
