It was Séan’s turn to hold up a hand. “Captain, your continuing to sidestep the issue for why I’m even here honestly frustrates me a good deal. As it is if we’re talking about respect due the other then neither have you afforded me the respect of scheduling or showing up for your evaluation. I had to track you down while I have a shipload of other evaluations to perform and not enough manpower, time, or energy to really do it in. So while I’m sorry that my actions embarrassed you, this is not a conversation I’m having right now. While I hold a rank in Starfleet and am subordinate to you, for the purpose of anything to do with the mental health of the crew I am outside the chain of command. You can of course bring this up with Starfleet Medical or put in a letter of reprimand after your psychological evaluation is complete but I’m done being sidetracked and stalled. As I see it your behavior leads me to believe that you are not fit for command. While I have the power to relieve you of duty…” He paused and took a deep breath. “I know of your upcoming vacation and trip to Betazed. Take the vacation and relax. Upon your return schedule an appointment with me within two days. I hate to put this as an ultimatum but if you don’t and I have to track you down again then you will be relieved of command until I have a chance to commence a full psychological evaluation or ship you to Earth for Medical to do so.”

The empath studied him keenly as she listened to what seemed to be quite the rant. If he thought she’d be dramatic or something n this moment, he’d be not only be sadly mistaken but also rather disappointed.

Séan wasn’t disappointed by the lack of reaction from Ghubari, quite the opposite really as he was tired and frustrated and didn’t really want to get into an argument. Had he known that she evaluated his response as a rant, well he might’ve been amused by that but still disagreed. It felt as if his bottom line had been touched and so this was more of an all business response on his part.

He turned and walked a few steps to his discarded shirt and shoes then started to put them back on. “I hope your trip is a pleasant one and that you’re able to find some measure of peace. The crew and I will be here when you get back and I hope our next conversation is productive.” With shirt and shoes back on he started walking to the holodeck exit.

She didn’t have to say anything. In fact, he had cleared made it so the conversation was over but it rankled her sense of what was right and how these things should go. Sure, the conversation had gone in different directions and she had needed to make a point so that they were clear about things in the future, but he had side stepped her there, so where did that leave them? “You could have asked, you know. I don’t go out of my way to be difficult. It’s a waste of both our times. You came down here. Yes, I was doing something off-duty, but I was not shirking my duty. This conversation might not have gone the way you wanted it to, but last I checked counsellors were more interesting in having conversations than shutting them down,” she said, her accented and already low-pitched seeming deeper, the accent thicker.

Séan stopped in the door way and looked back. He turned fully around to face Ghubari, his expression once again passive. “I did ask. Right at the end of my check-in with you. You said to get something scheduled within the first few days and I did. I didn’t follow-up on the missed appointment because I got busy and thought you likely got busy too, but this was why I came to you. Not following up was my error though. I apologize for not having done so.”

She stood there, still appraising him, but finally gave him a nod. Much as she had experienced in previous times, words seemed precious and she didn’t feel like wasting them. “I suppose we’ll just have to find our particular way of starting conversations, because I’m pretty sure we don’t want to be doing this”-she gestured to the space between them-“every time.”

Séan took a deep breath and let it out slowly before he turned back to face Ghubari and closed the distance between them again. “You’re right. I want what is best for the crew and for you. I would like that when we sit down and do your evaluation that there are no preconceptions or judgements. I don’t know if a clean slate is possible but I don’t see a reason that it couldn’t be a civil affair.” He glanced at the holodeck doors for a moment before looking again at the woman. “I don’t mean to sidetrack us, but I have a concern regarding your rock climbing companion. I’m unfamiliar with her so I don’t know if that reaction she gave was the norm for her, but she seemed needlessly defensive.”

There was sufficient accord between them that it suited Ghubari just fine to leave it at that. Perhaps she had gotten too cozy on this ship, or too used to the easy rapport she had had with all the other counsellors, but Iven was definitely going to shake things up whether she liked it or not.

At his remark though, she exhaled audibly. “I don’t know her very well yet but it did seem out of the blue and that was definitely her holding back, so I’m concerned as well. I had thought I might check in on her after but if you would prefer to, that would be appropriate as well.”
