Koraia broke out into wild laughter. “Oh my goodness, what I would pay to see Stark baking cookies! He’d hate it! It totally means we’ll absolutely have to do it anyway,” she added with more laughter as she turned off the rice and set it aside. “You know more than anything I think he’d complain most about cookie dough getting into his fur. And then we can teach him about aprons.” It was such a wild and funny image that it almost made her laugh to the point of tears.

Jennifer laughed alongside Koraia. Even though she didn’t know these people yet, she could picture the chaos. “Ah, man. That would be brilliant,” she refrained from rubbing her eyes, blinking away the tears of laughter. “Geeze, if I laugh too hard I’ll cry out my contacts…”

Koraia sighed with a happy grin. “I’ll make a note to add cookie baking to the to-do list.

She stepped over to take the rice over to the table, setting it up for the meal. “Didn’t have rice much growing up. It didn’t grow particularly well in our climate. But I’ve grown to love it.”

“A common but imported item where I’m from,” the captain said as she lifted the lid on the curry and gave it a stir. “We also have ugali which is maize cooked thick like a porridge. We’ll eat it plain but it’s also used to scoop up stews and such.” She flashed a grin at Wallace. “I figured the rice would go over better.”

“Sounds great,” Jennifer returned the grin. That Ugali stuff sounded pretty good. “We did have corn, which I think is similar to maize, but potatoes were more common as a starch base.”

Scooping the curry into a serving dish, she inhaled deeply. While it wouldn’t be quite like it normally was, she knew she’d still enjoy. And if it wasn’t Jennifer’s thing, all the more for her. That and she could bring leftovers home for her and Konral. “What’s the thing you miss most about home?”

“If you don’t count the people, which would be my answer every time, I’d have to say the weather,” she replied, pulling out a chair and getting seated. She poured herself some water, holding the jug over a second cup to offer the same to Koraia. “Especially early winter, when the snow started falling for real. It got pretty deep, but it was always so much fun to play in as a kid… making snowmen, sledding down the old hills…”

“Snow…” Ghubari mused as she moved over to the table, curry in hand. “I’ve seen it. But i haven’t spent much time in it.” She set the curry down and went back for the rice, spooning it into a dish. “Kilimanjaro got snow but I never went there when it was on the ground, so we never had it locally. I grew up on a tropical savannah, so even going to the Academy was a bit of a shock,” she said with a laugh. “There was this one trip I took with friends in my third year and we went to Lake Tahoe and they taught me how to ski.” Grabbing the last of the things they needed, she meandered back over to to the table and set everything down before taking a seat. “I seriously thought they were trying to kill me,” she said with another laugh.

“I admit, skiing is terrifying,” Jenn agreed, waiting until Ghubari had sat down before beginning to spoon some rice onto her plate. “I’m as graceful as a giraffe on stilts, so I fell a lot when I tried it. Glad I was wearing a lot of padding. Academy friends, eh… They’re quite a thing. Have you kept in contact with your old pals?”

Koraia sort of half nodded. “Some here and there. As happens you lose touch with people over the years. And we lost some of our group during the Dominion War. Occasionally I hear from someone, but I’m much closer to friends I had when I was younger, or those I’ve worked with later in my career, like the Captain I worked with when I first became an executive officer.”

“What about you? Do you keep track of those you knew from the Academy?”

“Fairly extensively. The majority of my childhood friends are…” she trailed off a little. “Well, most of them are still boots on the ground back home. And most of them felt more like annoying cousins than anything resembling friends. The Dream Team was my first real group of friends. I’ve weaved in and out of being on the same ship as my first friend, Shess. We keep bumping into one another, amusingly. He’s on temporary assignment to a station in the Andorian sector right now. Gari is taking some time off to get adjusted to his new Symbiote. Elonat is,” she paused, fiddling with her fork, “on the USS Ja’reth as their Chief of Science, and H’Morr was on the Ark Angel for a bit, but I’m not sure where she is right now. We lost Ellie… Kupo and Krull were actually with me on the Equinox, and Percy and Egam are serving on a medical ship, the USS Sunset. It was a big group,” she grinned. “Shess coined the term Dream Team for some reason, not sure what the origin of that was.”
