Not seeing any hints of Viyara’s surprise at her comment about possible relationships, Jennifer smiled slightly to herself, and continued to listen as the other woman explained her favorite colour to be purple. “I’m definitely a fan of purple. It looks really nice on you,” she said, returning the wink. “And it might be a bit of a cop-out, but my favorite colour is actually white. Specifically the white of snow. Although I suppose that would more specifically be my favorite shade. If white isn’t allowed, then I think I’d say red. Specifically a kind of orangey-red, like leaves in Autumn.”

“Thank you,” Viyara grinned. “And I don’t think white is a cop-out. Though I red is lovely too. I think it work well with your skin tone, hair and eyes,” she mused; her head tilted slightly to the right as she mustered Jenn closely. As if she was imagining her wearing different colours.

Jenn chuckled slightly at herself. “I really like nature, I guess,” she said by way of an excuse, grabbing another couple of fries and dipping them in the milkshake before eating them, leaving Viyara a section of time to either speak or let the silence hang between them.

“Nothing wrong with that,” Viyara replied with a smile and then reached for a fry. Though unlike Jenn, she didn’t dip it into her milkshake, but instead ate it as it was. “What is it that you like about nature? And snow and autumn in particular?” she asked curiously. This was not only safe terrain, but she was genuinely interested in the other woman’s answer. For while she herself loved to climb and enjoyed a beautiful vista thoroughly, she’d never go so far as to say that she really liked nature.

“Ah, I’m not sure. I guess nature strikes me as a universal thing? Everyone who has been on a planet has seen nature, and although it is different for each individual, most everyone seems to be able to appreciate the idea of the natural world. I love it because it happens on its own, not caused by intelligent interference. And that’s kinda crazy to me, that all this beauty can just happen without anyone planning it…” Jenn leaned back slightly, smiling at the thought.

Nodding thoughtfully, Viyara helped herself to another fry and a sip of her milkshake. “I think I know what you mean,” she mused.

“Winter and Autumn in particular… just because they were my favorite seasons growing up. I mean, spring is fine and all, but it tends to be all melting snow and rain and mud. Summer is great too, but I don’t really like the heat. So Autumn and Winter kinda won me over as a kid, and I never moved on from that. I suppose it’s also the memories. There were a lot more family things happening in autumn and winter. Holidays and such. Long story short, I like snow and falling leaves because of positive association. I’ve always loved them.”

As little as she wanted to think about her own family and childhood, Viyara never seemed to be able to do anything against the twinge of .. was it pain? Jealousy? When other people talked about happy families and fond childhood memories. Pushing all those thoughts and feelings aside, she grinned and asked, “I know that a lot of people are very much into winter sports. Are you as well?” While looking straight at Jenn, she tried to imagine the other woman in winter clothes and on skies or skates or wearing snow shoes. It made for an interesting mental image. And even though she herself wasn’t a big fan of snow, Viyara suddenly found herself wondering what it would be like to actually try any of those things. For as adventurous as she was, winter sports were something she had never even given a try.

“Oh, heck no,” Jennifer shook her head, letting out a bit of a snort of laughter. “When it comes to sports and such, I’m as graceful as a giraffe on stilts. I can manage to skate somewhat effectively as slower speeds, but that’s about it. As much as Hockey was our ‘national sport’, I was always picked last for teams because everyone knew I’d fall on my arse if I tried shooting a puck.” She distinctly remembered a lot of teasing from her brother and some of the other kids regarding her lack of dexterity in sport-related areas, but she left that out.

Viyara couldn’t help but laugh a little as well. Though she hoped that it didn’t sound like she was laughing at Jenn, but with her.

“Have you ever tried playing any sports?” She asked in return, tilting her head slightly. Jennifer wondered if the other woman would be interested in some holosuite adventures. Maybe they could go Ice Skating or jogging. The idea made her smile slightly.

“I do,” Viyara grinned. “I’ve actually tried a number of things. But what I always come back to is rock climbing, Parrises squares, martial arts, some boxing. Even dancing,” she admitted and felt her cheeks turn a little pink as she mentioned dancing. Though she wasn’t entirely sure why. “I like doing things that help me to stop thinking and to get out of my own head for a bit, you know what I mean?” she added, sharing a little more than she usually did. Especially with someone who was her superior officer, even though right now they were just two people having a conversations of drinks and a shared meal.

Jenn chuckled in response, nodding. “Yeah. I use books to do that, and jogging sometimes. Or audiobooks while jogging. That’s the best one to get me out of my own head, and boy do I get stuck in my head sometimes, I know what you mean. I’ve tried things like rock climbing but it turns out I don’t do well with heights,” Jenn explained, closing her eyes and cringing for a moment at the thought. “Dancing is fun though!” she grinned, leaning forward and grabbing another fry. “What kind of dancing though?” she asked, eyes lighting up. “Square Dancing, Ballroom Dancing, Andorian Flop?”

“Nothing wrong with that,” Viyara replied softly. “We all have things we don’t do well with.” For a brief moment her expression seemed to darken, before her smile was even wider than before. Though there also seemed to be a hint of embarrassment in her voice and expression when she replied, “Don’t laugh, but I actually do ballet.” Now it was she who cringed slightly. To gloss that over she added quickly, “Though I also like to listen to music and just dance freestyle.”

Jennifer’s smile widened slightly as Viyara revealed her dance of choice. “Ballet??” She leaned forward, eyes lighting up. “Wow… That’s incredible. That kind of stuff takes so much grace and skill. I’m a little envious, to be honest. Maybe one of these days I’ll be able to convince you to do some pirouettes or whatever they’re called. I, uh, don’t have much Ballet knowledge. I’m well versed in Andorian Flop though. Thankfully it works with chaos and gangly waving of the arms. Or so Shess tells me. He could have been lying through his chitinous teeth for all I know,” she chuckled.

Viyara hesitated for a moment and then nodded. “I will. If you show me Andorian Flop. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before,” she grinned.

“Alright, what’s your favorite food? Mine is Pizza, specifically pizza with spicy sausage.” Jenn added at the end.

“I don’t really have once specific food I like best. But one of my most favourite cuisines is Bajoran. Most people seem to think mainly of hasperat when they think of Bajoran cooking, but there is so much more to it and it varies a lot from region to region.” Helping herself to another fry, she added, “Pizza is really good as well, though while I’m not a picky eater sausage is one of the things I don’t like. No idea why.”

Jennifer nodded. “I’ve tried cuisine from lots of different planets, courtesy of my Academy friends, but Pizza just… I discovered it my first year at the Academy and it just stuck,” she said, “Although milkshakes are pretty close.” Viyara’s admitted dislike of sausage made her chuckle. “Aww, but spicy sausage pizza is the best thing ever.”

“No, I’m afraid I have to disagree with you … Commander,” Viyara laughed and then winked as she added Jenn’s rank at the end.

Tilting her head, Viyara pondered for a moment and then asked, “If you had to choose: Sweet or savoury?”

“Sweet. Definitely sweet,” Jennifer replied almost immediately. “Sugar is my lifeblood. I had a massive sweet tooth growing up, and despite being a literal doctor for the past decade, I never managed to kick it.” And as if to punctuate her statement, she drank some of her milkshake, noting silently that it was starting to melt.

“Nothing wrong with that,” Viyara grinned and drank another sip of milkshakes herself. “I have a bit of a sweet tooth myself,” she continued. “Though if I had to pick, I’d probably go with savoury. For while I like certain sweets a lot, there also those that are too sweet for my linking and there is only so much of any given sweet I can handle.”

“I never seem to tire of sweets. Especially anything including ice cream,” Jenn replied, holding up the milkshake. She scratched her nose. “Okay, hmm, what else… Favorite animal from your homeworld, and favorite animal not from your homeworld.”

Viyara ate a few more fries in silence as she pondered that question. Eventually she said, “There are something like … maybe butterflies on my homeworld called Kaastnea. They are about the size of both my hands. Some even a bit bigger. Their wings look like those of butterflies, but in paler colours. And the wings are always at least partly, sometimes even almost completely translucent. They aren’t insects, though. Their bodies are similar to those of small bats. Though with fluffier, cream coloured fur and small round ears. They are very pretty, but you wouldn’t want to touch them as they have very sharp teeth and claws and don’t hesitate to use them. I learned that the hard way when I was little.” Viyara laughed and shook her head before continuing, “From other planets I’d say red kites from Earth. How about you?”

Jenn listened with smiling eyes to the description, and tilted her head with thought. “I think I’d have to say… Arnaks. They’re a kind of… Fox-ish thing that some of the Colonists are working on domesticating. They’re a little bigger than a fox. Real lanky, with red and brown fur. Thin snouts,” she gestured with her hands, trying to replicate the shape of the head. “Big ears, big eyes. They are really playful, and were some of the first animals on the site to show interest in the Colonists when they arrived. And outside my Homeworld, I’d have to say Andoria’s Snow Faer. They’re a kind of furry… Blob with legs and eyes. Like Tribbles, but both cuter and less replicating. Only trouble is they can’t handle the heat. Anything over -20 and they start overheating.”
