Jenn leaned back again, shaking her head slightly. “I’ve already shared plenty about myself, my good friend. As I recall, our conversation at the Christmas party was almost entirely centered on my story. I feel as though it is high time I got to sit back and listen to you talk about yourself. I guarantee that I’ll find it much more interesting than you think I will,” she shot back, narrowing her eyes while continuing to smile. The scientist was quite slippery, but now that Jennifer wasn’t flustered by her sudden appearance into her life, Jenn was better able to handle the conversation. She really did wish having this conversation wouldn’t feel so much like a boxing match.

Yiyara looked at Jenn for a moment, thinking hard about what she could tell about herself while the charming smile never disappeared from her face. Part of her wanted to get up and get a drink. Mostly to have more time to think, but if she was honest with herself also to have something to hold onto. But Jenn would probably interpret that as just another attempt to evade talking about herself. And if she interpreted her expression and posture correctly, that might not go over well. So she stayed in her seat and replied, “I was born and grew up as an only child on a Federation colony by the name of Sohiri. I joined Starfleet when I was 19. I studied both in San Francisco and Beta Aquillae II. I graduated with a major in biochemistry and a minor in forensic science in 2391. My first posting was on the USS Kajaani. While I was there I got my PhD in biochemistry before I was transferred to the USS Irii Suu and now I’m here.” She winked at Jenn and accidentally on purpose touched Jenn’s lower leg very gently with her foot.

“For someone talking to their XO, that was a pretty good answer,” Jennifer chuckled quietly after a moment, giving Viyara a sympathetic expression. The woman clearly didn’t want to talk about herself. “Gives me lots of info about your career. Then again, that’s technically what I asked for,” she shook her head slightly. Dammit, why did she have to experience her usual lack of conversational skill even when she was trying so hard to be cool and collected. That’s what she got for treating this like an interview. Interview answers. It may have been a mistake to push the other woman into talking. “How about I get us something to drink?” she asked, glancing across the room to the bar. “Then maybe we can start this over again…?”

“A drink sounds great,” Viyara replied, hiding her relief behind her wide smile. Normally she would have asked for something alcoholic. And strong. But to her own surprise she heard herself say, “I’ll have whatever you’ll have.” Toning her smile down a little while making it gentler, she continued sincerely, “Starting over again sounds good.” She was still unwilling and unable to open personal questions about her past, but maybe this time they could stay on lighter, more current topics. Like hobbies or things they liked.

Jenn nodded, then stood up and rushed over to the replicator. What she was planning on didn’t require the bar. “Two vanilla milkshakes and a small plate of french-fries,” she requested of the replicator, and was promptly given her request. She carried the tray back to Viyara and plopped one of the cups down on the table in front of her. “French-fries and milkshake. According to my sister, the perfect combo for a first date with someone you’re not sure if you’re going to date. Especially if you’re both part of a small community like a colony or a starship,” she said with a small grin, grabbing a french-fry and dipping it in her milkshake before eating said french-fry. “No risk of getting drunk and doing anything embarrassing. Plus, it’s quirky or something.”
She leaned back, smiling, then asked. “Alright. Personal but not invasive, and not too interview-y questions. What’s your Favorite Colour?”
