Marishka violet sclerae silver eyes met this new comer’s. He was merely an Orion male who had dared set foot in her domain which meant he was less than nothing to her therefore, he could be as rude as he wished. She was on a ship full of people and a few of them liked her well enough to owe her a favor or two.

Hammor’s glare indicated he caught the dismissive look. Typical for one them. Can’t even get away from them on damn starship… he thought to himself before choosing to dismiss the thought and instead focus on the decent person in front of him.

Kingston chuckled. “Don’t think I haven’t thought of that,” she said as she twirled her fork into her pasta. “Actually, I was supposed to go to a small medical ship. It was a doing an exploratory mission with the Athena but then there was an incident and the assistant head of the counselling department was killed. They wanted someone with experience to fill the role because the circumstances of the woman’s death were… troubling for the crew and, well, I was available technically. So I get here instead. It wasn’t my choice but everyday I am in Starfleet I am at more potential risk. But I’ve weighed that against living anywhere else and accidents can happen to anyone. I’m no safer on some quiet colony than I am out here, so I choose to be where I am most useful.” She dug into her pasta with a smile.

Hammor took a big bite of burger and thought about what she had said… abut risk and accidents. Swallowing, he took a drink and then said “But risk is what we do… right? We take risks so that others don’t have to. So they can sleep in peace without worrying about what tomorrow may throw at them.” and he unconsciously glanced at the Lounge hostess before looking back at Janna. “So that those who would do harm for their own pleasure are kept at bay… at least… that is what I hope we do. Otherwise, I have some very strong words for whomever wrote the recruiting pamphlets.” and he grinned.

Janna laughed. “Something like that yes. My job is a bit more different than other officers though. I consider myself the necessary support so that others can fulfill that mission. Doesn’t mean I haven’t gotten caught in the fray though. Fortunately for me we have some very inventive medical staff,” she said with a wink.
She finally reached for the chocolate malt and took a sip. Her green eyes lit up a bit and she nodded. “Alright, I like that. Doesn’t quite go with my meal, but I like that for sure!”
“Alright, your turn. I gave you the highlights of my story. Now you,” Janna said with a grin as she delved back into her fettucine.

Hammor gave her a half-smile and said “Well… I guess that’s only fair. So…” and he took a deep breath. “I was born on Orion.... I know, I know… shocker. Don’t know who my parents were, never met them. Or if I did, neither of us knew it. So, as is typical there for an unwanted male child, I was sold and put into the Pit, er, the slave fights. I was there for… oh… I think about twelve years, maybe? Thirteen? Hard to know. Birthdays weren’t really a priority.” and he chuckled. “But I eventually got out of there, and after a few years I managed to get hired on to a freighter owned by a human who had been in the Pit with me for a while. Musta’ made the wrong Syndicate mad or something, I dunno. Anyway, he hired me and I learned some engineering keeping that thing going. Applied for the Academy when I was… I think maybe twenty?… and was denied. Applied again. Denied. Applied again, and finally got in… barely.” and he laughed. “Hard to score high on the entrance exams when you’ve never been to school!” and he smiled broadly. “Anyway… I made it through the first two years ok, and then I went to Engineering and Operations… which definitely shocked a few people.” and another chuckle. “Did well enough to get Ensign at graduation, and then have been bouncing around the fleet ever since.” and he smiled and looked at her as he took a drink.

On the surface it would be easy to say that he had accepted this rough start at life, and if they were in a session, she’d want to dig a bit to find out of that was true, but as it was, while mindful, Janna opted to take him at his presented demeanour. “Well, clearly you’ve got a strong streak of perseverance. Good for you,” she said warmly before she bit into the garlic toast.
“Any ambitions? Anything you think, yeah, maybe one day I’ll do that?” Janna asked.
~Janna Kingston, Assistant CNS
Hammor’s eyes flashed with excitement and his face took on a look of unabashed certainty. His smile broadened as he said “Thanks, I appreciate that. And yeah… I have one ambition.” and he took a drink, his eyes locked on hers.
He then said “I’m gonna be an Admiral.”

Eyes lighting up, Janna leaned forward and gazed at him deeply for a moment before nodded. “Yes, I think you will,” she said with a grin and a fair bit of certainty. “Just try not to bash too many heads together on your way up the ladder, will you?” she teased.
~Janna Kingston, Assistant CNS
He leaned forward and returned the gaze and said “If I have to bash heads together to get my point across, then I failed already.” and he smiled and winked at her before leaning back. “And you, Janna? What are your ambitions? Your dreams?”
Hammor, Ops
Swallowing a bite, she shook her head. “Call it a foible of mine, but you know… I really don’t. Starfleet was the goal, then my doctorate. Now?” Janna shrugged. “I don’t know. I’m sort of coasting for now just waiting to see if there’s something that sparks a sense of ‘yes, I must do that’.” She could understand it if people were weirded out by a counsellor who didn’t kow where she was going, but the trick was that she was happy where she was at. That made all the difference.

Hammor nodded and said “Sometimes its nice to let fate decide.” and he took the last bite of burger and smiled. Washing it down, he relaxed in the chair.
“So what do you do for fun while you wait to see what life throws at you, then? What do you enjoy doing on your time off, besides spending it talking to strange green men?” he asked with a smile.

Behind the bar Marishka was feeling the full effects of the hot blood and decided it was not to her liking, at least not in public. Discreetly, she took the hypo from a box, injected herself, and went about her business. Her mind, thoughts, and blood began to clear.
One of the newer volunteer staff stealthily approached her, “Hey Boss.” Ann whispered, “Are you okay?”
Marishka didn’t think it was any of this woman’s business but knew she wouldn’t leave without an explanation of some kind. “Apparently this doesn’t suit my physiology at the moment. I’ll put it away for study later. No take the dessert menu to Counselor Kingston and her friend. Talk up our fresh offereings but don’t hover.”
Ann nodded and smiled. “Yes ma’am. It’s okay, really. I think we’ve all got that one alcohol we just shouldn’t drink.” she said before heading out as requested.
