After a moment, he must have felt her presence due to the remaining connection, though it had waned a good deal. His hazel eyes opened in surprise and he said “Captain…” quietly, before he had meant to.

She gazed at him, her own pale amber eyes etched with warmth.

“I had instructed the computer to alert me when my leave was at an end, I have not missed duty, have I?”

“No,” she said softly, keeping the peacefulness he had worked hard to build. “But I thought we should… discuss what happened on the bridge sooner rather than later. It’s not everyday I get to experience a mindmeld, after all.”

He nodded slowly, the flickering flames reflecting in his eyes, making the hollows of his features shadowy and forlorn looking. It was a difficult thing to describe the meld, such as they had shared. An unfettered joining of thought and feeling. Limitless access to the inner being of someone else. He spoke quietly.

“You realize that what was shared… Is sacred. We each now carry a piece of the other’s Ka. I would not share that… That is to say, unless to pass on your memory to your progeny. You have my solemn oath.”

As with anything, Ghubari was a deeply thoughtful and reflective person and this situation provoked it no less. That she took time to gather her thoughts and words would likely be no surprise to Va’rek. “I’m honoured,” she said softly. “And I too would not share what is not mine to share. But I should remind you that I am married to a telepath and we are open to each other. I might not be able to help what might slip out now and again, though I will do my best to guard that part of me as needed.” It was likely to be a conversation her and Konral had to have, because the last thing she wanted was for her husband to think she was hiding things from him, when the truth was far deeper and also much simpler.

He nodded. “This is acceptable to me. I would not have you put stress on your relationship for my own pride or comfort.” The truth was often the easiest way to explain a situation… Which made it the logical choice, of course. He wished he had the gravity and smooth dignity of an older Vulcan. Much of this shouldn’t have needed discussing, or explaining. This feeling only made him that much more sure that it was the correct choice to perform these rituals and embrace his heritage. He knew he could be a much better member of the crew if he could keep these emotions in check. He must not allow them to rule him again.

She considered him at length, knowing that there was much below the surface with Va’rek. “You struggle,” she stated simply. “How might I help?” The offer was a simple one at face value, but after having such a brief but immensely deep connection to him, he had to know that an open ended offer from the half-Napean was no small deal. Ghubari’s core identity was about loyalty and integrity and her own sense of what was right told her that for those accepted into her personal world she would go to hell and back for them (and had done so on multiple occasions).
