Koraia couldn’t help but laugh aloud. “Ahh, Commander, if there is one thing I do prefer, it’s honesty. Besides I usually know when most people are lying.”
Taking a deep breath she shook her head. “No, Luka didn’t not leave for any other reason than family ones. She was needed elsewhere for a longer duration than we could go without a first officer. Which is how you ended up here.”
She sipped her chai for a moment. “Tell me about you as an officer. Preferences, quirks, the things that drive you absolutely crazy.”

Jennifer sighed silently, relieved. Glad she hadn’t unwittingly offended her new Captain with her questions. She thought about the question for a few moments before answering. “Well, I’ll start with preferences… I’m an early riser and prefer working in the morning to working in the evening - although, granted, that can really be a relative thing on a starship. I like to be fully briefed on all the available information on a situation so that I can make, well, informed decisions.”
Ghubari nodded. “Good to know. i am the same way.” The more information, the better in her mind.
“Quirks. Well, as you already saw, I have a distinct lack of tact, and a high curiosity level. I try to reign myself in, but I have a tendency to seem kinda nosy because of it. I have trouble telling where I should utilize tact and just… not ask the burning questions on my mind. It’s actually quite a helpful trait for a doctor, not so much for a diplomat though. I hum or sing fairly frequently. My brain doesn’t like to be left in silence. I’ve tried meditating to quiet my head but for some reason I just end up playing music over and over inside my brain. And sometimes it spills out.”
“And things that drive me crazy… total silence, for one. Also, oddly enough, when people have a conversation in a language I understand, but only barely within the range of my hearing, it drives me nuts. Hearing the odd word but not being able to make out what they’re talking about. Some little voice in the back of my head starts to get paranoid that they’re talking badly about me. Also, when people mistreat plants and don’t take care of them. Same about their own bodies. It’s the doctor in me, I suppose. Have to make sure people are healthy.”

Listening attentively, Koraia was taking the opportunity to really get a sense of the woman before her, and the questions were meant to be basic but also indicative of of how Wallace thought. This of course would determine where they would gel and where they would possibly clash. She had been lucky thus far that all her first officers had been people she worked well with. She hadn’t been close friends with all of them, but the working relationship had been solid. Stark and Antin were just possibly anomalies in her life and she was okay with that.
“Well, having been a doctor I think will give you good insight into the crew right now. You would do well to be on the lookout for those that are perhaps not doing as well, physically or mentally. The counselling team is going to be doing quick evals of the entire crew, but it’s still important that anyone who needs more immediate attention if brought to the forefront sooner rather than later.” Ghubari looked out the window again, but it was only for a brief moment. “And just to make things more interesting, just as you’re settling in, I’m taking some leave. I haven’t had any in…” Her gaze shifted upwards as she tallied the stupidly long time. “Well, years,” she said with a rueful smile. “As you may or may not be aware, I am married to our Chief of Security. And we promised his family that we would eventually make it to Betazed to have a party with the family, since we did the terrible thing and eloped here on the ship. At this she grinned. “I’ve got a week till we leave, but that does mean we don’t have a huge amount of time to get you caught up. But I’ll only be gone for a couple of weeks and the senior staff will all be here to help you out.”

Wallace listened attentively, and laughed at the comment about the two having eloped on the ship. “Congrats. And lucky you for finally getting some time off. Funny, I was going to go on shore leave for about the same period of time. But then they sent me my instructions to come here, so that’ll have to wait for a while longer,” she chuckled.
“My sister recently had a kid, I was going to visit home and check in on all the growing Nieces and Nephews, and all that jazz. It’s going to be delayed a bit longer now, obviously,” Jennifer gave a small shrug. She was quiet for a few moments, staring out the window. “I’ll definitely keep an eye out for people who don’t seem to be doing well. It’s a good idea, and you’re right about my medical background giving me a different perspective. I love that fact, that people from any department can end up on the track to command if they apply themselves well enough. Even though it was unexpected, I think I’ll be grateful for this experience, in the end.”
