Séan stopped a good distance from Ghubari and observed her behavior. Not in a way one would to be defensive but in respecting her space. He tilted his own head a little to mimic part of her posture. “I can appreciate that Captain and will strive to be more prompt in the future.” He smiled in response while neither acknowledging the seeming playfulness of the rebuke nor pointing out that new arrivals typically have a day to report in after getting settled aboard ship. He wasn’t concerned one way or the other about how she knew his name. He knew the names of all of the senior staff, even the replacement XO, but couldn’t place faces to the names really until meeting them.

Ghubari didn’t show whether his response was acceptable to her or not, instead just continuing to gaze at him.

“How were you sure I wasn’t new to security? I’ve been told often enough that I missed my calling in life there due to my build.” He asked curiously.

She tapped her head with two fingers. “Empath. Different trainings often give me a different feel. Security trained people have some common traits and learned behaviours I can also pick out on casual observance. It’s not perfect, but I’ve been in Starfleet a long time now. I’m well practiced,” Koraia said casually.

Séan nodded his head in acceptance. “That makes sense. I can’t ‘feel’ people per se but I’m pretty adept at reading them through various factors. What sort of feel do I give you then?” He stepped forward and closed the distance between them a bit.

CNS Iven

Dropping her right hand but leaving her left on her hip, Koraia gave him an appraising look. “Security trained folks are acutely aware of their surroundings, even when you think they’re completely focused on a person. And while they will be aware of a person’s emotional and mental state in case it affects their actions, that’s a supplementary piece of information. But science folks, and in particular those who deal with the mind start inward and work outwards, even if they use the circumstances and environment they find a person in.” She took a step closer. “You like a puzzle and it’s probably so much better when all the pieces aren’t given all at once. More rewarding even. And you care about the person that is before you, that much I know, but how much and how deep are factors that vary from situation to situation.”

She grinned. “Am I close?”

Séan nodded his head again then smiled as he replied, “I don’t think I’d be as effective in my chosen profession if I didn’t care for people. That can be a double edged sword though I recognize but I’d rather care and be open to getting hurt then not giving my all to help others.” He took a step closer to Ghubari so that they were within easy reach of each other. Perhaps matching her move for move would be seen as being insubordinate or taunting but he thought that displaying confidence would likely serve him well here.

She snorted. “If I thought for a second you didn’t care about people, about this crew, you’d be off this ship before you knew what hit you.” It was an effortless statement to make, but that didn’t make it any less true. And despite the ease of their conversation, there was grit behind her words. Hard won and no hold barred. It was never a threat and always a promise.
