Cara nodded to Harkness with a smile as she watched him leave. It made her a little sad when she realized Harkness was grieving, it was obvious the way he said Miranda’s name. She didn’t comment on it now though, she was sure on his first day on his new ship the last thing he wanted to do was talk about lost loved ones. Before she could turn to go back to her remidal daily tasks she spoted Commander Stark next to Harkness. She eyed them cautiously since Harkness looked too tense for her tastes. She walked over to them slowly.
“Is everything alright gentlemen,” Cara asked reminding them subtly they were in sickbay and to take any arguements elsewhere.

Stark’s eyes were locked with the Chief and he didn’t swivel or turn when he replied to Cara. “Everything /will/ be fine Cara” he said in a very quiet voice. “As you know it’s part of my job to make sure that there are no hidden dangers aboard the Athena, or perhaps no lightning rod that could attract hidden dangers.” His voice altered slightly as his eyes continued to bore into the Chief’s “However being as I’m something of a lightning rod myself and cannot expect others to be otherwise, I seek only allies… not enemies”. It was obvious he was fishing for something.

Stark Nightstalker CIO

Horace did not flinch from the stare, it ws rare to wind someone with the willpower to match the CIO. Horace spoke quietly as well but it was still cordial, the tension drained and the eyes calmed. Cara’s approach had helped, he did not want to fight in front of the girl. Horace knew this one would have been bloody. “I am not a lightning rod, I am the clean up crew, I am thier to put out the fires and recover the bodies from the twisted smoldering steel after lightning has struck. I am aware of your job, and your reputation Commander Nightstalker. We are not enemies, allies might be the hardest road you ever travelled.” Horace stated flatly.

MCPO Horace Harkness

Cara got the feeling there was more being said than she knew but at least it didn’t look like Harkness we as going to comes to blows with star. At least not yet.
“Yes that’s right we’re all allies on this ship. It’s not always an easy road but it’s worth it. Isn’t that what you taught me sir,” Cara said to Commander Stark her grldark green eyes thoughtful.

Stark sighed and relaxed his stance carefully while still remaining watchful. “I think we understand each other well Cara and I for one would welcome another ally, especially one who is /not/ a lightning rod for trouble. In my business forgiveness comes easy, but trust… well that’s another matter”.

He looked at the Chief again, “I look forward to working with you amongst the fires and twisted steel Chief”. He grinned then and his teeth were on full display, “Something tells me life will never be dull”.

Nodding slightly to both of them, he turned and left. Somehow though, he felt that for the first time in a long time he had come off second best in that encounter. He had no pride to be hurt but it was disconcerting all the same.

Stark Nightstalker CIO

Horace watched the Catian go with a watchful eye. It was keep Stark’s sniffing nose out of things for a little longer that mattered. Horace wanted answers, but not to the questions that people thought. He understood what happened in the deep black, split decisions, lives lost. He was not here to cast a net for blame. He wanted to know these people, specifically the Captain. As long as it was not a waste, then what happened had already happened. Horace had lost many friends over the years in Star Fleet, the final frontier was a final resting place for many, many souls. Horace was not certain he had won that encounter, and someday he might regret that, or be thankful for it. The decisions of Today rule the encounters of Tomorrow he always said.

Turning back to Cara, “I am sorry about that Doc, not my favorite person, or my favorite type of Officer, I am afraid, probably gonna bite me on the sometime, The decisions of Today rule the encounters of Tomorrow” he said tapping the side of his nose.

MCPO Harkness

Cara gave him a light pat on the arm. Harkness seemed sincere, and there was no harm done. She could hardly fault the man for being cautious on a ship full of strangers.
“It’s alright, he tends to startle people but he doesn’t mean any harm,” she told him relaxing a bit now and giving him an easy smile. “And you may be right about that my decision to join star-fleet years ago certianly keeps today interstering and tomorrow is probalby not going to be dull either.’ Cara looked at Harkness for a moment and wished she had the right words to take away the sadness she saw in his eyes.
‘You’ll have to look me up for a drink while we’re off duty sometime, I’m sure we can manage to keep each other out of trouble,” Cara added with a smirk on her face.
