Ari’s orders came to the Chief Engineer’s console in time for shift pass down.

“Going to need large sweeps of passive scans in approaching nebula. Please see that ship resources are set and available. Please also keep warp on standby. No unnecessary shut downs or test runs of systems till further notice. Thank you”

As the ship approached the nebula reports of malfunctions were some minor systems came in across the ship. Whatever was happening in the nebula was causing some problems with EPS systems. A report soon came in from the Bridgehead that the backup universal translator system blew at the Commander’s console, while at the same time a secondary sensor array on C-Deck went down and an alarm rang to note a minor power surge through B-Deck’s internal comm system relays.

Main power was not affected - thrusters, impulse, warp drive, and weapons were all online and showing no trouble.

Jay gathered all his people around for a meeting about what was going on with the ships systems. “We need to look at the EPS systems and find out why the translator system blew out” he said hoping everyone understood him.

El was virtually bouncing on her toes. This was exciting! “I’ll get to the bridge and repair the translator and see if I can find out anything more.” She thought the why was more science but she had her ideas too. Nebulas could carry a charge in all that stellar material which in turn could react. “Maybe we’re the lightning rod to all the energy in the nebula?” She offered. A big hunk of metal out there.

In response, the CE said, “I hate to burst your bubble Ensign, but I need for you to take this team of NEs and go look at the EPS system. I will head to the bridge and take care of the translator. ”

Just then, the Captain’s voice came thru. [O] Chief, I’m going to need you to stand by down there. We may need Warp in a moment’s notice and I need to be sure we aren’t affected by whatever makes this nebula ‘unique’. Please inform me immediately if there are any changes that would resonate outwards, or would affect us inwards. [C]

While the ship’s EPS grid showed showed minor fluctuations throughout the ship, warp drive and other primary systems were not in danger. While Ensign Serinde upgraded the power delivery system on the universal translator, similar issues were still cropping up over the ship. Minor EM fluctuations were not a problem for primary systems, but the comm system was quite sensitive and transceivers throughout the ship were going dark. Inter-ship communication was still online, but with some of the transceivers and relays shorted out there was a shrinking limit on the number of communication channels that could be open at once. They would need to be repaired as a short-term fix, or upgraded as Ensign Serinde was doing for a hopefully more permanent solution. Either would take time and people.

It was a short while later that El returned from the bridge and sought out the Chief. She had a chuffed look to her and wore a grin. “Chief, bridge is set up and working again. Secondary board was fried and power matrix as well. Replaced them and swapped out the Model 21 Matrix for the 19. Seems to be holding the bursts better. I’m wondering if the sensor/comms array is acting like a lightning rod to what is going on in the nebula. I’m wondering too if we polarize the hull if it will disseminate the energy and ease up on the communications. At least until we can replace the 19’s. What do you think?”

The Chief stopped what he was doing to consider the words of his junior officer, while he would not have thought that…it was not a bad idea. The problem was, did the bridge have enough power to function the way it needed too, much less polarize the hull. Bohannon walked over to the power indicator board in engineering and looked at the readouts.

El realized that her last report and thought must have came out in one long burst of babble in a single breath. She had been excited about all of this. Sure it wasn’t like she’d not fixed anything since being on in even this short time - but it was her first run at actually repairing something in a ‘situation’. El also thought to apply some gossip since she had overheard some things. “We’re outside this nebula but the Captain wants us to be real quiet like. There’s some ships in there, maybe, and they want to avoid them.” Her brows furrowed as she hadn’t entirely caught the ‘why’ yet on that. “But there was a transmission in what one fellow said was old Morse code that translated to ‘HER’. Now if that isn’t bizarre!”

She moved with the Chief to the panel. Her mind spit out calculations on power utilization. “We’re not at warp right now,” she said. “Zeffie should have enough power.” Whether that was her consensus or simply her hope would come out on what the board said. Idly she chewed at her bottom lip while waiting. She supposed that was better than chewing on her nails. The doc should be happy there.

After making a quick swing past sickbay, Jonathan made it to engineering. He had grabbed a data pad on his way, and had loaded the short bios on the crew on it. His transfer had been pretty quick, and he hadn’t had a chance to learn all of the crew yet.

Stepping through the hatch, and closing it behind him, Jonathan looked down at the data pad. Comparing the picture on the screen to the crew around, he moved over to who he thought was the Chief Engineer.

“Lt Bohannon?”

A man turned around with geese and other materials all over his hands and face. Not knowing who it was that said something he simply replied.

“That’s me…can I help?”

“Commander McKnight, just made it to the Bonaventure as the new Executive Officer. The Captain wanted me to check-in with you and your team and see how everything was going. Maybe lend a hand if needed. It’s been a few years since I’ve been stationed in an engine room, but I’m sure it will come back pretty quickly.”

Jonathan stepped forward and moved over towards the chief.

Hearing the reply, Lt. Bohannon snapped to attention…

“Sir, I did not know you were aboard already…please excuse the mess.”

El stepped back when she saw the unknown man with the rank come looking for the chief. He didn’t ‘look’ like an engineer. If this was some years back that was a lot of changes that had taken place in the design of this ship and warp theory in general at least according to her teachers. She hid a small frown. Did the captain not trust them? Forgetting the lip chewing she unconsciously brought a thumb up and nipped at the nail with her teeth.

“At ease Chief. No need for all the formalities, it is your engine room. Plus I don’t know if I could trust an engineer if they didn’t leave at least some mess out,” Jonathan said with a grin.

“So bring me up to speed. I know we’ve got a mission, but the Captain didn’t have a chance to get me quite up to speed yet. But it sure seems like we are on the clock already.”

El decided that standing there gawking in a cynical fashion was perhaps not ladylike so she turned to the nearest console to the two talking (so she could overhear, of course) and brought up a list of notes that had been affected and just how many 21’s she would have to swap out. The question that next arose was did they have enough of them in stores? If not she would have to triage them and replace them with the old ones or perhaps only do the necessary ones and leave the others until they were clear of the nebula where she could then do the rounds without fear that they would burn out on her again.

“Sir, we are almost done here…although it seems to never stop. I have a top notch engineering crew and they have worked hard to get us up and running again” responded Bohannon.

“Well unless you need my help, I’ll let you get back to it then. An engineers work is never quite done, there always seems to be another problem to fix,” Jonathan said chuckling.

“Just keep us apprised of what you need, as I have a feeling we are going to be testing your skills here shortly.”

“Aye, sir” came the reply from Bohannon.

As the new Commander left Bohannon went back to work. One could see that he always had his work cut out for him. The ship must be running all the time and the CE was masked to make sure that occurred.
