[O] Almost done Captain. It’ll be just another minute on the forward sensor pod. [O]

There was a loud clanking in the background.

[O] Make it 3 minutes Captain. [O]

Ltjg Barr - CSO

Ari nodded. [O] Thank you, Barr… Bridge out [C]

[O] Bridge this is Jenkins. Lieutenant Barr had to step away, and I finished up getting the forward sensor pod switched out. Diagnostics check out, and the pod should be good to go. [O]

NL Jenkins - Sci

The Captain’s voice came back over the console. [O]Copy that… Thank you, Jenkins [C]

It would take only a few minutes for the main computer to interface with the Sensor Pod to provide additional resolution. While the pod wouldn’t allow the ship’s short-range sensors to be extended any further, it could provide much more detail and cut through more interference than the ship’s traditional sensors could handle.

While the computer was still working on interpreting the output from the newly turned-on system, Jenkins would be able to see that small bursts of energy inside the nebula seemed to come from, or at least interact with, subspace. That would give at least a partial explanation as to how some of these energy bursts were coming out of seemingly nowhere.

Naomi leaned against the console on standby, her eyes watched and observed her fellow officer work on adjustments to the pods. She had tried, but she had issues. Not being completely confident with the technology, her attempts were slow. The young woman guessed her CSO and fellow officers were pressed to get things done. At some point, one of them took over her duty. In the past, she would’ve snapped, but she had learned one thing. Some times it wasn’t worth it.

At least I’m good at being backdrop for the ship, she thought bitterly and made sure to keep out of the way.

Roger walked by, noticing Naomi leaning up against the console. The two of them hadn’t interacted much, seeing as Roger was permanently assigned to the Gamma shift. He didn’t mind the late hours, the ship was often a tad more quiet and he was able to get more work done. He had been called in for an extra duty shift by Lt Barr, knowing the team needed all hands on deck.

“Did everything go all right with the pod interchange?” Roger asked cheerfully, looking up at Naomi with a smile.

“Well I had issues, but I got a little help.” Naomi gestured with her hand to the other officer currently working on the console.

She began to pull upright, her arms removed from the console. Her eyes shifted to face Roger as she continued the light chatter.

“I usually hate tasks that required skills in engineering. It’s one I never excelled at. What about you?”

–ENS Naomi D. Locke, Sci

Roger smiled. “I’ve tinkered here and there with some engineering stuff, but I too am not very proficient with it. Luckily we’ve got plenty of great engineers on board who are always willing to lend a hand.”

The Captain’s voice came over the comm just then. [O]Bridge to Ferguson, please come to the bridge.[C] It was a calm voice as if nothing was wrong, but a small smile curled the corners of her lips and hinted at something in her voice.

“Oh dear,” Roger said. He walked over to a comm panel and pressed the button. [O] I’ll be right there Captain [C] He looked back over towards Naomi. “You’re doing great. If you need anything, I’ll be on the Bridge.” He gave her one last smile and then turned and made his way towards the Bridge.

“I feel just lazy more than anything,” Naomi mumbled quietly as she watched Roger smile.

She flickered to Roger when she heard the CO’s words. A look of concern spread across her eyes, her attention fixed on him. She nodded but didn’t feel fully relaxed by his words.

“Good Luck,” the only words she knew to say.

A short while later, Roger returned, walking over to Naomi with a curious look on his face. “Well, that was interesting…” He mused, looking over at Naomi. “It appears that Lieutenant Barr has had to leave us.” He paused, scratching his beard with one hand. “The Captain has appointed me as the new Chief Science Officer.” He looked around, then back at Naomi.

‘I wonder if you might give me assistance in monitoring the sensor data,” Roger said. “We need to get as much information about this nebula as possible. There is also a chance of some 21st century transports in the vicinity that we need to keep active scans for and do our best not to cause any disruptions in the region.” He smiled sheepishly.

Naomi looked up from her observation then spotted Roger enter. His expression indicated something was up. Her right eyebrow to arch in question and she patiently waited for him to explain. She crossed her arms over her chest when he revealed his infield promotion.

Unsure what to say, she blurted out the first thing that came to her memory.

“Better you than me. The last Captain to try and promote me, I asked if they were bloody crazy.” That statement wasn’t a joke especially since the man took offense to it.

She still hoped Roger would get a chuckle out of it. Her arms fell down to her sides as she nodded.

“Of course. Let’s hope nothing breaks down while we do this…” Naomi stated in a polite tone, her hand gestured for the new CSO to lead the way.

Roger smiled. “I have every confidence in your abilities and I would definitely appreciate your assistance. It’s a new experience for me, well I guess for us both, now that I’ll be working with you more closely now and not always been on the night shift.” He let out a laugh. “My body isn’t going to know what to think with the changes in my sleeping pattern that I’ve been doing lately.” He laughed, ending in a sigh.

“All right, lets head on to the science labs and we can monitor the data from there,” He said. He turned and made his way back out the door, looking back over his shoulder towards Naomi.

“So tell me,” He said as they walked. “What kinds of things have you been working on lately?” He had his own experiments and projects that he conducted during the late hours, but he didn’t usually look into the work of his colleagues. Lt Barr had given him a lot of free reign when it came to working on the night shift, and he hoped Naomi could give him some more insight as to how the department had been running during the normal hours when most people were on duty.
