“That’s all I know as well Commander. Nothing more than the very basics.”

Commander Jean-Francois Millet XO

Baumann nodded and said “I see.” and he took a deep breath and began.

“The nebula we are approaching has been a puzzle for astronomers since fisrt detected in the mid 21st century. Radiation from the nebula defied modeling from its chemical composition. But there is another matter of greater sensitivity involving the nebula - a prolonged search for two missing Earth ships from the 21st century was underway by the original probes passing here as well… though no sign of them had been detected and all simulations predict that this is the furthest possible distance a sub-light speed craft from that era could reach with time dilation and rare-to-uncommon spatial distortions.” and he paused to let the statement sink in.

“These are ancient ‘cargo’ vessels… carrying prisoners in cryostasis. Prisoners to be considered armed and extremely dangerous even without weapons. While it’s not outright stated in the report, it is heavily implied that these are genetically augmented humans from the Eugenics Wars. Any encounter is to be reported to Star-Fleet, and under no circumstances is anyone in cryostasis to be revived. Star-Fleet will send a retrieval team. We are not to instigate contact.” and he paused again.

“The Augements were… are… genetically engineered super-soldiers. They are five times stronger than a normal human. And they are several times more intelligent. Those two factors, coupled with their known sociopathy and psychotic tendencies, mean if we do find these vessels… we must be extremely careful. Just one of them could absolutely kill everyone on this ship. And we would be very hard pressed to stop them.”

He looked at Ari. “Thus my belaying your order to broadcast, Captain.”

Baumann, Intel

Ari leaned back in her seat and shook her head. “So we have to investigate why ‘this’ nebula, as well as determine if any of these genetically enhanced human transports are in the vicinity. If they are, NOT engage them, try not to be seen, and report back so others can come and fetch them. Am I getting all that right?” She had a slight smile on her face but there was a ‘yeah, nothing to it, just don’t get killed’ look on her face.

“I think this may have been the best choice, after all. If we need to, we are closer to the station here than at either of the other spots and can get back there relatively easily if this goes sideways. And I think, after this, we’ll need it anyway. Even if just to report our findings.” She glanced at the XO. “Any questions or comments before we decide just how to handle this?” She raised an eyebrow of inquiry towards Millet.

Baumann shrugged and said “Unless the ‘sideways’ you mention means they are indeed here and our presence results in the awakening of the Augments and our destruction. Then we have left them a civilized world to conquer within easy reach and with no way of anticipating their danger. But I am sure it will not come to that.” He was arguing or being sarcastic, simply looking at the alternative outcomes if they mess up.

Baumann, Intel

Meanwhile .. on the bridge .. El emerged with a shoulder pack on. It was only her second time that she had really been here, but this time it was for business. Before coming up she had checked on the location of the universal translation module and, as she came onto the bridge she moved to the console. She could smell the residual chemical and burning residuals and see the blackened portion around the edges of the panel. Glancing about she noticed very few people there. Kneeling she took out a driver and started to remove the panel near the floor. “Where is everyone Commander?” she asked, pulling the panel off and waving her hand as a small cloud of smoke greeted her.
- El, Eng

“If these things are as dangerous as you say then why would Starfleet program their ship top awaken them when a ship gets near? Also why don’t we just blow them up? These things aren’t terminators. You give them or even one of them so much credit. I believe there is a way to stop them that your betters stre not telling you. After all, how did they get them all on that ship of theirs and in cryo? Unless sending us here is part of a much bigger plan so that we get the bad rep of awaking them, while the poets that be use them without impunity.”

Commander Jean-Francois Millet XO

Baumann looked at the XO and said “My betters, as you so eloquently term them Commander, know more about the Augments than you do. And as to how they managed to get them into cryo? It took a planet-wide rebellion. One of them was a warlord over the entire continent of Asia and a population of billions. And as to the assertion that our presence may be more than research? Of course it is. I just told you that, Commander. But if we were to be the bait for that trap, dont you perhaps feel that an unknowing bait would be more advantageous to a plan for accidental encounters?” and he turned away from the XO and looked at the Captain.

“Ma’am. I will take position on the bridge between communications and science. I will monitor with those officers to try and garner as much advance notice as we can should we encounter one or both of the vessels.” and he stood up. “If I may be excused, Captain?”

Baumann, Intel

Ari frowned. Instead of denying him, she merely completed the thoughts she was having. “So, we have to find the ships, not wake anyone with proximity alerts and discover why ‘this’ nebula was there chosen resting place. Do your reports happen to say who ‘sent’ them this direction? If they are in cryo, then who’s piloting the ships? Cause my guess is they didn’t leave an augmented awake to do it.” She shuddered mentally at the idea. ‘“So one of two possibilities. We sent them out here, and lost track. Or they somehow ended up in control of the ship. Either way, we will eyeball only the nebula till we find these ships and send word back where they are. Once we know who all is out here, we will discover what makes this nebula more appealing, and different from the others. We will get the utility pod set with a sensor pod. We can get what readings while we can while we sweep the area. Once we are sure where the Augmenties are, we will get more in depth scans.”

She glanced at both men. This wasn’t a question, it was a plan. Plain and simple. She settled her gaze back on Baumann. “Will that work? Or do you have additional or different suggestions?” It was a sincere, not sarcastic, question. She needed to make sure her plans weren’t counter to whatever intel the Commander had.

Ari

“Again, they may not be here… this is just the most likely place for them to be,Captain. As to your plan, passive scans only and immediate verification of anomalous data and we should be as prepared as we can be. Permission to return to the bridge , Ma’am?”

Baumann, Intel

He was upset. “Dismissed.” She nodded with a mental sigh. Turning to the XO, she nodded. “Please see to the utility pod sensor change. And let’s get back to the bridge.” She rose up, “Any questions? Asking why I am after transports filled with Augments isn’t one of the choices.”

Ari
CO

“As you wish Captain and Commander Baumann. Go f##k yourself you pompous prick. I was just asking questions and did not mean to sound insulting. But you Germans take everything as Ann insult. I will go do as you say Captain.”

Jean left the room and if Baumann will try to stop him, then he will punch him, if the Captain tries he will remove her hand and continue without saying anything.

Alison had finally made her way up to the bridge. She was really looking forward to just a good old exploration mission. For once, no one will be shooting at them, or nothing would be blowing up.

“Alright,” she said sitting down at the science console. “Let’s see what we have here.”

She started programming a sensor sequence so they could do a thorough scan of the nebula.

Ltjg Barr - CSO

Commander Jean Francios Millet, XO

Ari was so stunned at the XO she actually couldn’t respond till she got to the bridge, right on the heels off the Commander.

“Commander Millett!” She called to him just before he got to the lift. “You are to go to your quarters immediately and stay there. I will come speak to you when time permits. And be thankful you’re not going to the brig.”

Glancing around she landed her sights on Barr. Her voice softened slightly so the woman knew her anger wasn’t directed at the CSO. “Barr, please take another science officer and see to the changing of the utility pod arm. We’re going to need the sensor on it. Let’s try and get one fore and one aft, shall we? Thank you.”

She was furious with the XO’s behavior. Her anger, plain on her face, mixed with surprise, was something few had ever seen.

(added to request for pods)

El heard the doors part; they grated in one spot signifying it needed an adjustment or that something was in the track. Peering out she saw some whom she’d not seen yet. Nobody looked happy and the captain looked livid. El had just yanked the offending board out. One end was still smoking but her attention was on the people emerging even as she wriggled more parallel with the console to not be trod on.

The following were reported to her from the various stations before heading into the conference room with Baumann and Millet. As she settled back in her chair, obviously more than a little irritated, she asked for status reports.

“Any more information on the sighting of the ‘phantom Bonnie’ off the port bow earlier?” She looked to the helm to see if they had come up with anything.

Glancing to the comms station, she called down to engineering once more. [O]Engineering, we need a repair up here on the bridge. Seems my comm station decided it didn’t like no longer being on vacation. Please send someone up as soon as possible. [O]

El winced and took a moment to garner up her courage. Emotions were running high here and that in turn was making her nervous. “I’m .. we’re here Captain,” she said from the deck. Should the Captain look in her direction she would wave the smoking board with an expression of ‘getting there’. “

“And someone get on another station and see what can be done about the comms and universal translator. I don’t wanna be in the dark if anything is out here!”

“Primary UT is operational Captain,” El said. “Secondary board, uh, burnt. I’ll have a replacement in shortly and test both primary and secondaries.”
- El, Eng

Kenneth was at the helm, and he wasn’t surprised by how natural it felt to sit in that chair. Just like coming home. When the ship was 15 minutes out from the nebula, he notified the Captain. “15 minutes till arrival.”

When the ship was 15 minutes out from the nebula, she asked all stations to report in.

(This should get everyone involved at this point)

Baumann took a position between Scuence and Communications. He looked back and forth between both and said ” Any anomalous readings or indications of beacons or hails, report immediately. I would imagine we will get our fair share of both with the nebula’s activity.”

Baumann, Intel

“Would you like us to slow down pre-emptively to take a look from a little farther away, Captain?” The helm Officer asked.

Fleet, Helm

Baumann looked over his shoulder at Fleet and said “Helm, how long would it take us to travel the circumference of the nebula?”

Baumann, Intel
