Warp 3.5 for a couple weeks. That had been the direction they had been given as one of three choices after the refit. So here they were, about 4 hours out from where they could start getting readings. Ari was in the Ready Room looking over what little information she had.

IC: Hours passed on the bridge without much incident, though it was possible the nebula was having an effect on sensors. With an hour to go until reaching a better range a sensor ghost of the Bonaventure registered several thousand kilometres off the port bow of the ship. With only half an hour to go there was a minor disruption in the comm array, the backup universal translation matrix interface module overloaded in a shower of sparks at the comm station. The main system, however, remained online.

Once within higher resolution range of the nebula further confirmation of Star-Fleet’s findings were found. The bright-glowing magenta nebula was mostly hydrogen and helium, fairly typical, and had a somewhat higher concentration of magnesium and potassium, though that was hardly unusual. What was unusual was the luminosity, heat and other radiations, and from up close it also appeared to be sending out gravitmetric distortions, all signs that it was expending much more energy than it is expected to have on hand. The distortions were proving to be a downside to the sensors, they could only penetrate the nebula to a depth of 200,000 kilometres, barely enough to scratch the surface.

Some of the waves were also affecting the communications system. As the ship got closer some of those episodes of light turbulence were accompanied by the communications panel registering three or four incoming subspace or simple radio channels, but they disappeared just as quickly as the distortions passed and each seemed to come in on random bands.

Nebula J218 was turbulent, but the ship could safely withstand the condition of what parts for weeks and even longer if the hull was polarized.

The fist anomalous reading wasn’t much to get anyone’s attention, though it was most assuredly recorded. When sparks erupted from the Comm station. The Captain was notified. Having dozed off in the Ready Room, she came to the bridge to see engineering already at work making sure comm was repaired as swiftly as possible. “REPORT!” She called out.

The following were reported to her from the various stations…
Anomalous phantom “Bonnie” off the port bow an hour ago
Comm overload and universal translator matrix overloaded just now
Some communication fluxes were also happening

She made a ship wide announcement they were thirty minutes out from the nebula and asked all stations to report in.

(insert engineering, security, medical and science check ins)

As they approached the nebula and turbulences increased, she called for hull polarization and tapped the comm on her chair. [O] XO and Intel to the bridge[O] As she finished and awaited the answers, she settled back in her chair and pulled the console around to face her to watch the readings. “Ok, let’s see who or what is out there. Let’s try and clear that comm traffic up. Comm, send a message of arrival both into the nebula as well as back towards Earth. Let’s make sure we aren’t gonna be bouncing our own signals off the vapors, shall we?”

“Belay that please, Comms.” said a heavy German accent. Baumann came to the comm station and said softly “Monitor and record any anomalous communications, try and isolate sources or sources, but do not respond until the Captain says to, and then only with what the Captain says, understood?” He then looked at the Captain and said “My apologies, Captain. But there are some possible interested parties in the area that we do not want to announce our presence to. I am available for discussion in private, if you like.” and he gestured to the side of the bridge.
