As soon as the meeting was over, Baumann went directly back to his office. He secured the door, and then went into the secure compartmented communications suite newly installed in the former bedroom of his office.

He sat down and established a secure lockout of the system after making sure the file was ready. He keyed in his ID, command codes, and verified with the biometrics he was actually him. He brought up the file and opened it, and then began the typically tedious task of sorting through the Intel reports.

Tedious was not on the agenda. After reading and rereading the reports, Baumann took a deep breath and then exhaled slowly. “Very well, then.” and he paused for a long moment. And another long moment. And then another.

He pressed the comms. [O] Lieutenant Prescott to the Intel office immediately. [C]

Elizabeth had been in the gym when the call had come. Wishing for just half a second that she had a phaser on her, she shook herself mentally and collected her gear.

She arrived at Baumann’s office about four minutes later. She was in sweat pants and a sports tank top, her hair pulled up in a ponytail. The bruises were nearly all gone now. A few faded spots still lingered in the worst of the places to remind her when she woke up in the morning, just how stupid she’d been.

Dropping her bag near what used to be her desk, she glanced around for the Commander. “Prescott reporting, Sir.” She announced of herself as she walked in.

Baumann looked up from his desk and asked flatly “What have you learned over the past few days, Lieutenant?”

Baumann, Intel

Sweaty from her workout and snippy from lack of sleep, she answered without thinking.
“That I need to be a better judge of character. I need to reevaluate situations constantly, even if they seem to be the same situation with the same people. I need to not allow personal feelings to intrude on my common sense. And the only way I’m gonna win against you in three weeks is if I just sho…” she stopped, eyes wide a moment in realization her tongue had gotten the better of her. “And that I need to curb my reactions and think before I respond.”

Her right hand unconsciously balled into a fist for a moment as she realized she was probably about to be put on her backside any second for coming in here and mouthing off. But for some reason, the idea of an apology warred in her mind. Sure, she was sorry she said it out loud. But on the other hand, she wasn’t sorry for the honesty.

She glanced at him without looking away, prepared for whatever was to come.

“Finish what you were thinking, Lieutenant.” was all he said.

She grit her teeth and took a deep breath. “That the only way I’ll be ready to knock you on your backside in the weeks, is to shoot you with a phaser the moment I walk thru that door.” She didn’t look away, but it would be obvious to him that it was burning every muscle in her body not to do so. “Sir.” She added when she realized she’d missed it.
