Jean-Francois looked at the Captain with a puzzled look on his face. “Captain. Are you feeling ok? I only ask because you’re drinking coffee instead of your usual lavender tea.”

Commander Jean-Francois Millet XO

She smiled and shook her head. “This isn’t a lavender tea morning, unfortunately. But I appreciate your concern. I usually have my morning coffee in my room. But this morning I had to be here.” She leaned back in her seat. “We have choices to make. And I may as well run them down for you now. And we’ll discuss it with the others when they get here.”

She tapped her console. “There is an anomalous nebula detected only three weeks away at Warp 3.5 with unusually strong bursts of heat radiation unexplained by the chemical reactions that should be going on. Further away at a voyage of five weeks, in the opposite direction, a Bell-IV probe detected a Minshara-Class world covered almost entirely in water. 98% of its surface is ocean and 2% is rocky and covered in glinting, purple light from thin, whispy islands strewn over the deep blue sphere like gems. Atmospheric composition suggested the life was possible, but, the probe could not collect any definitive evidence. The star it orbits is an unusually large red giant, one of only two in the entire sector.

And just over six weeks away at cruising warp, is another Minshara-Class planet. This one is inhabitated, the probe picked up basic amplitude-modulation and frequency-modulation radio signals while picking up no subspace-based communication activity on the planet, suggesting a population with firmly pre-warp technology. This was not able to be confirmed. The planet had also been flagged for further study one additional reason - just before the probe moved on from the planet to its next destination it ran a scan of a select sample of mining and other major industrial sites on an isolated section of a continent. Among the mines was one mining a dilithium ore deposit close to the surface. With one dilithium ore mine found in such a small sample, it was possible that the planet could be covered with many of them.” She glanced over the report to be sure she had it all.

“So, we need to decide which, if any, we go to first. Or if we hit them all up. Personally, I think we should go to the closer one first.” She laughed. “It also seems the most interesting. And if we hit the water planet next, then the pre-warp planet last, we can spend the most time at the place that needs the most in depth checking on.” She glanced to the two of them and shrugged. “So what do you guys think?”

Melissa rang the chime and waited, she didn’t know if they were having a premeeting or not. So she didn’t want to interrupt. She was dressed in her duty uniform.

MACO

The door opened as the chime sounded and Ari glanced up. “Morning… coffee and tea over there,” she nodded with a smile.

Melissa held up her cup “Already got it Captain. I’ve been up since 0500 hours this morning.” She said as she leaned against the back wall, her favorite spot during these meetings. It gave her a chance to keep an eye on things and if need be, a quick exit should it be needed. Melissa, was by nature paranoid, and didn’t like to leave things to chance.

Rachel considered for a moment “Well we’re talking about at least two months of travel, plus any time spent studying the actual planets, I recommend starting with the nearest world, it’s been a while since we’ve done a good spot of exploration like this, some empty space’ll do us good.”

Dr. Grey - CMO

Alison tapped the chime, and stepped in as the door opened for her. She was already carrying a cup of coffee in her hands. “Good morning,” she said as she stepped in.

“I agree with MACO. Start at the nearest unless there is a reason not to. If we get a call to be somewhere else in a hurry then we can always try your hobby Captain and sling shot our way to the next target.”

Melissa laughed “Thanks Commander. I’m glad that I’ve made such an impression on you.” She said from her spot.

Rachel blinked at the XO then looked at Tafoya then back at Millet. For a moment she considered if she had gone deaf for a few seconds or not paid attention to whatever the MACO had said, she decided against commenting in case that had happened as it was not outside the realm of possibility.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Baumann’s normally stoic face reacted with slight shock at the XO’s reference to the Captain’s theory as a hobby. Anyone familiar with the Captain knew it was a serious scientific endeavor for her. He made a mental note to have a word with the XO later about taking care and being cognizant to not appear dismissive of side projects conducted by shipmates… especially the Captain in front of her staff.

Baumann, Intel

Ari glanced at the XO with a strange look on her face. “You question me drinking coffee, when I would, perhaps recommend another for you.” She shook her head and tried not to smile too much. “That was the Medical Chief, not the MACO, Commander.” She pointed to Melissa. “That’s the MACO. But I agree as well. We will let engineering know when he gets here. To those who didn’t catch it, we have out next assignment. Or rather, the places we should go, though not necessarily the order we are to go in.”
She nodded to the consoles before them. “In one direction, relatively close, is an anomoly to investigate. In the other direction at two vastly further distances, are another anomoly and a pre-warp civilization with warp signatures nearby that we need to investigate. So I agree. We go to the closest one first. Then double back and hit the other two. The civilization last in case we need to stay for any significant amount of time.” She glanced at Millet once more. “And no, we will not be doing a slingshot around anything.” After a moment she looked around to the others. “Any objections or comments? Now is the time to speak up.” She glanced around at those present to see if anyone wanted something different.

Millet got red in the face a little but it was noticeable. “Oh. I am very sorry Dr. Grey. I am still learning whom you all are. I will double my efforts to know you all. I apologize again. I do not have any more remarks.”

Melissa just chuckled to herself. She was a fighter not a scientist, she rolled her shoulder. It was bothering her today.

MACO

Ari looked around the table. “Well that’s it I suppose. Science, I want you ready to get as much information from the Nebula as we can once we get there. Engineering, orders are warp 3.5 towards coordinates provided. Medical and MACO stand by and make sure everything’s ready for when we get to the colony. If there’s no further questions, let’s get to it.” She glanced at the Intel Officer. “Commander Baumann, I’d appreciate any heads up from your assignments that can be done in parallel with our own.”

Looking around once more, she smiled. “Dismissed.” She got up from her own chair and headed out towards the Officer’s Mess. This morning she needed breakfast.

OOC: Sorry just getting caught up after my LOA and being ill for a day or so.

IC: “Captain, assuming all remains normal, you will have all the power I can muster up to get us where we need to go. After all, we do have the best engineering team in Star-Fleet, if I do say so myself…and I say so.”

It was clear that Jay was proud of his team.

Ari couldn’t help but smile at the man’s enthusiasm. “I know…” she nodded towards the door. “Now let’s get ready to go.” She smiled once more and kept heading out the door.

Alison nodded as she headed out with the rest of the DH’s. It seemed like her wish had come true and they were going to get to explore a nice normal nebula for once.
