The office was still in the midst of the remodel, but Baumann decided to send the request anyway. Tapping some commands into the terminal, he sent the new Executive Officer a meeting request for later that morning in the Intel officer’s work area. He then told the station personnel working on the room that they would have to be gone at that time.

Baumann, XO

Jean-Francois was in his office when he got the message. He looked at it and frowned and though perhaps that there was going to be tension between the two officer, even more so than he thought. First and foremost, he was the ex lover and XO to the current captain. Now Jean-Francois was. Secondly this man has the audacity to tell him where to meet instead of bowing to the wishes of someone, although the same rank, but in a superior position. Maybe this Wulf guy still thinks he runs and or owns this ship?. He thought to himself. No matter. Jean-Francois was a man that did not judge a book by its cover. He decided to accept this invitation and to see what the man has to say.

At the appointed time Jean-Francois was at the Wulfs den and pressed the chime.

Commander Jean-Francios Millet, XO

The door slid open and the man inside stood up from the desk. He was striking in his way, he was blonde and blue eyed; only a few inches taller but much heavier of build than the XO. His most noticeable features at first glance were two fine-line scars, one on each cheek. When he spoke, a German accent lent a crispness to his speech.

“Commander Millet. A pleasure to meet you. I am Commander Baumann, the new Intelligence officer assigned to the Bonaventure. Please… have a seat.” and he sat hinself. “I apologize for the unfinished space, but I thought it prudent to speak sooner than later and waiting for such a time as the completion would delay us. I hope you understand.” and he nodded once.

Baumann, Intel

“Merci Commander Baumann.” His French accent thick and smooth a silk. HE took a seat at the desired location after looking at it of course. “That is a wise decision. So what can I do for you since that is why I am here Commander?” He thought this guy cool, calculated and arrogant even for a Frenchman. The way is manipulating this meeting like he is charge of everything. But again Jean-Francois does not judge a book by its cover....he just takes notes.

Commander Jean-Francois Millet, XO

“I have already met with Captain Bovar and reviewed my orders and operational parameters with her. I wished to do the same with you. I feel that such discussion will keep the… miscommunications… some of my colleagues have encountered to a minimum. Tell me, have you had a chance to review my file? Are there any questions you have that I can answer or clarify before we discuss my orders?”

Baumann was calm, professional, and polite. His face remained stoic and his posture relaxed.

Baumann, Intel

Millet’s face was the exact same as the Baumanns. “Oui. I have and what I could read was very nice. The rest I guest they chose a black highlighter pen instead of a yellow one to really highlight your skills. I know you were the previous XO and Armoury Chief of this fine vessel and I know that you used to be lovers with the Captain. Both of which are now non existent. So please tell me what you told the Captain but with less detail since I am not important enough.” He still kept a straight face and even a smile with a slight twinkle in his blue eyes.

Millet, XO

Baumann’s expression didn’t change, he merely paused and his head cocked to the side slightly.

“I see. Well then. I will start with a review of some of the more glaring misconceptions you seem to be operating under, and then we will get to my orders. “

He locked Millet’s eyes with his own and began. “First. My meeting with the Captain was supposed to be with you as well. She declined to have you present, not me Commander. Perhaps you should direct your feelings of ill-importance to her, and leave me out of it, hmm? Second. I have not now nor have I ever been… intimate… with the Captain. Nor do I have any intention of doing so. If you dont believe me, again… please take it up with her and leave me out of it. Now I see why it was deemed necessary to have an Intelligence -” and he emphasized the word noticeably, “- officer on board to assist the Captain and crew. I will ask you, politely, one time. Please refrain from assuming facts about me that you have no basis for. To do so going forward will make this situation very difficult… for you. If you have a problem with me, then you come to me. And we will settle it. Agreed? Good.” he answered before the man could speak.
“As to my orders. I will tell you exactly what I told the Captain. I have been assigned as the Intelligence Officer for the SS Bonaventure for an undetermined period. I am subject to recall at the discretion and direction of Star Fleet Intelligence only. While I am assigned to the Bonaventure, I am not an official member of the crew. My presence is a courtesy to the ship and to the Fleet Admiralty, but I must stress that my direct orders come from neither of those august bodies. I answer only to Starfleet Intelligence. Not you and not the Captain. I personally am happy to work with the Captain and the crew and try to help as needed, but I do not have to take orders from anyone save my direct superiors. My duties will be to provide the Command staff, at my discretion, access to current or recent intelligence information pertinent to the ship’s mission and any endeavors taken on. I will be responsible for gathering and dissemination of intelligence in all forms to Star Fleet Intelligence, and to conduct such operations as I am directed or as I deem essential. I have the authority via Star Fleet Regulation 9717.d slash 6 A to conscript or utilize any material or crew necessary to complete my missions. This does not require the approval of the ship’s Captain or Command staff, however those personnel can request a stay by contacting Intelligence Section directly. I am to obtain intelligence in any way I deem necessary. Any identified threat to the Fleet or the Federation will be sent immediately to SF Intelligence for verification. In the event a threat is imminent, I have the authority to neutralize that threat in the most efficient manner possible. Those are my orders. Do you have any questions, Commander?” Baumann was still calm, and relaxed, but the man’s obvious misinformation and attempted goading had lowered Baumann’s opinion of the XO drastically.

Baumann, Intel

“Ah. Very good. I was misinformed and I do apologize for that. I also would like to apologize to you for assuming things. That is actually very uncharacteristic of myself and I feel ashamed. I guess I let my feeling for the Captain and this ship get the best of me. Again I hope you can please forgive me and I can learn from this mistake. Thank you for telling me the information. Is there anything else I need to know Commander?”

Commander Millet, XO

Baumann looked at him in silence for a few moments and then said “Not so much information, but some advice, Commander. In our respective roles, we dont have the luxury or privaledge of allowing our personal feelings to interfere with our duty. I trust you will think on that. Now, if you will excuse me, I must attend to the installation of some sensitive equipment. At my direction, your Chief Engineer has already been given the power specifications so as not to interfere with ship’s systems any more than necessary.” and he stood and placed his hands behind his back. “If you will please excuse me, Commander.”

Baumann, Intel

“I will. Thank you for the advice.” He stood up and seeing the commander put his hands behind his back and he smiled. “And thank you for not allowing me to shake your hand. I guess I do not deserve that from you just yet. I see the professionalism seething right out of you. I may be new to not only this rank but to this position as well. We all have different command styles. I like to learn from whom I can. I hope I can learn from as more seasoned officer like yourself in the future and again I will take your advice. Good day Commander. I hope our next meeting will go more smoothly and try not to install any listening devices in my quarters.” He turned and left without looking back.

Commander Millet, XO

Baumann watched the man leave and let the doors slide shut. He then allowed himself the luxury of a single obscene gesture before sitting down and resuming his duties.
