On arrival at the mess hall, Noami frowned. There were numerous officers drifted between collecting their trays to already leaving. Carefully she ducked through the bodies toward the bar set up and snatched a divided tray from the end. She collected a few toads in the hole, bacon, eggs, and roasted vegetables. She missed cooking for herself some times back in England. Perk of being on a planet meant the food rarely held a distinct and nasty after-taste, unlike the ship’s.As Naomi finished up at the bar, she turned to try to find a seat. That appeared to be a daunting task since most of her crew had sat down and left little to no space open.

Sitting alone at a table in the corner of the small mess was the unusually tall, redheaded Chief Medical Officer. She had a large salad bowl and a tall glass of water in front of her, upon noticing the Scientist she smiled her crooked smile and raised a hand waving her to the empty seat on the opposite side of the table.

Naomi’s eyes crunched as she peered through the crowds. She finally spotted a waving hand and bolted into the direction. Unable to identify the owner, it wasn’t until she had gotten close did Naomi see the familiar face of Dr. Grey. Mentally she groaned, but she hid her frustration well enough. The junior officer settled down into the seat across from the department head. As her fork began to stab into her roasted vegetables, she couldn’t stop herself. She blurted out a question.
“Why are you sitting alone? I figured you would have a few hovering doctors asking questions or looking over patient files with you.” It was then she realized something. She had been in the company of Americans for far too long.
