Doomed

The word was so archaic in Ari’s mind that it actually took her a heartbeat to realize what he said. New technology seemed a possibility, but she didn’t feel right helping a civilization make such a technological leap outside their own right. Then she had an idea.

“Barr… See if there are any suitable planets nearby. Perhaps relocation might be a better option then giving them replicators and scanners.” If they could be relocated, given a chance to evolve at their own pace, the Captain would certainly sleep better.

As Baumann chimed in, she smiled. Answering his comm, she then nodded to Allison. [O] Copy that, Baumann. We’ll be there. And we’ll see that the rest are taken care of. [O] Nodding to the NCO she added, “See they get food and blankets and medical care if needed. The bay should be big enough to hold them for now. We’ll get these talks going then see if we need more long term accommodations.”

As she turned for the door, she glanced back at Bane. ” Would you like to accompany us and meet the Sphere inhabitants?” While she wasn’t sure to what end, somehow it seemed right to invite him along.

A scan of the region was bleak, but not entirely so. This region was known as the Seven Dwarves because the surrounding systems in the sector had each descended into white dwarf stars. The nearest systems that would fit the bill - as in living stars with sensors noting planets - were in the next sector. It was a distance, however long range scans showed the stars holding planets and some potentially within range of life bearing. It was entirely uncharted where they were looking.

The slightly transparent form of Ari that Bane had adopted paused and inclined its head. “Truly I would be most interested, Captain.”

The shuttle pods and the larger transport were on approach and would be at the Bonnie within the next ten minutes. The transport was sizeable, looking more like a space worthy zeppelin, dwarfing the two Bonaventure shuttle pods that accompanied it.

As Ari moved towards the lift, she glanced at the screen and saw the entourage approaching. “Well, for a small world they certainly have impressive transportation. Let’s see about getting our guests settled and I will see to the leaders.” She stepped into the lift, awaited Bane to join her and headed to the bay to meet the shuttle.

“Aye Captain. I will finish my scans and will join you as soon as it is completed.”

As the Captain headed for the lift, Alison started looking over at the long range sensor scans, trying to see what planets there might be as options. Because everything in the area was uncharted.

As the scans came back, she noted a few planets that looked like they would be in the appropriate range to be hospitable. However, there wasn’t much else they could tell from this distance, but at least it was something.

Transferring the data to a padd, she headed towards the lift to meet up with the delegation.

Before they were able to answer, a sensor alarm sounded. The person at the station, a young crewman, yelped. “I got .. I got, wait, it’s not us. Sensors show that one, no .. two of the cities gravitic repulsors have just failed. Uhh … power just failed one one. Don’t know on the other but they may have been daisy chained. On screen.” The screen showed that the two repulsors simply went dark and began to fall into the black hole. “Other repulsors are moving, shifting to compensate .. whoa!” He continued.

“The City Sphere just shifted. I’m wow .. It just moved nearly 50 meters before stopping.” The viewer did a playback of the view .. the great chains holding the city looked like they ‘gave’ somewhere. Where to be determined.

=^=Bonnie, what’s going on? We just felt a lurch and things are toppling.=^= Melissa said as she moved to help Blackwell. In the background the crew of the Bonneventure would hear sirens wailing.

Failure of the sphere…

From the very beginning, this had been her fear. Ari listened to the report as she watched it unfold. The MACO’s call over the comm was back lit by gasps, screams and cries of surprise.

[O] Melissa… help where you can. It seems their technology is worse off than we’re thought. It’s already beginning to fail. Find the leader for your region. I need to know how many people he has watch over and their transportation capabilities… were may be looking at an evacuation if it’s at all possible. But don’t put yourselves in more jeopardy. If you need to… leave…[O] She didn’t like saying it, but above all the rest, the crew was her responsibility. The MACO would hear the pain in Ari’s voice at having to give that order. It certainly wasn’t one she had wanted to give.

Her next comm was to the shuttle team. [O] Ari to shuttle. If you guys are safe to land, do so. Find the nearest city leader. I need head counts and transportation abilities asap. Their technology is failing. If we’re unable to fix it soon, we may need to get out as many as we can. [O] The order came with a great undertone of pain, and the realization that if things got bad quickly, they may not be able to save everyone.

“I need everyone’s full attention on this. We’re may need to evacuate that sphere to the best of our abilities. I need everyone on alert, ready to deal with this. Take us to Red Alert. I need everyone awake and on this now.” She didn’t like any of this one bit. The idea of leaving some behind killed her. But abandoning them all just wasn’t an option.

[O]Understood Captain. I am with one of the security officers now. Dr. Blackwell will start working on injuries. We’ll keep you updated[O] What Ari didn’t understand was that Melissa didn’t believe in leaving people in danger, unless she had read Melissa’s file…which was quite colorful....

“Captain, I’m scanning their anti-grav units. Two failed. The network reestablished itself but it is carrying a greater load needing more power to keep the pull from the black hole at bay. With each failure the life span of the others decreases,” reported the science ensign. “The anchor that held the primary sphere in is at a critical point as well.” Then, in a low voice. “I hope the away team finds a home fast.”

[O]Captain, we have cracks forming in the interior of the sphere.[O] She said as she ran along [O]I am on my way to talk to the leader that is here. Once I am there, I will get back in contact with you. [O]

Ari watched the logistics come to her attention and sighed. Fixing the sphere didn’t seem an option anymore. Shaking her head, she closed her eyes a moment and responded to Melissa. [O] Get all the info you can… seems we may be evacuating the sphere rather than fixing it… at least for now. [O]

Her next comm was to the shuttle. [O]Ari to shuttle… you guys need to reach out to whatever leaders you can and see what they sphere has by way of evacuation ablities. I’m hesitant to bring the Bonnie into the sphere but we we see how close we can get for transporters. But I’ll be honest. I don’t think we can hold everyone. So we need to see what other options there are. [O] She nodded to the helm. “I need a full accounting of the spaces available in cargo and empty bays. Need to know right away how many lives we can put on the ship and how many need other ships off our bow till we figure out what we are going to do to save these folks. All suggestions welcome!”

Being a science officer made Ari wonder what they could do to stabilize the hole to let these folks keep their home. The Fleet Officer in her knew they should back off and not interfere. But the human in her, and the consciousness she knew her crew possessed, wasn’t going to let you walk away without trying to save as many souls as she could.

Ari sighed in relief to hear the shuttle had made it. [O] Be safe and don’t get too far from the shuttle. I don’t want to have to explain how I lost part of my crew to a ship with a black hole in its center, [O] she tried to make light of it. But she doubted it came out more than a mildly panicked plea to come back safely.

Isaac Entered the bridge after he stepped off the turbo lift. He went to his Consol at the tactical station and looked around.

“How is every one doing”

Ari glanced up as Isaac arrived. “We’re doing well, Mr. Black… please take a seat and see if you can get me a reading on the sphere please. We need to know what kind of timeline we are looking at for this collapse or if there is a way to prevent it.” She knew it was a long shot but they had to try. There was an entire civilization that may depend on it.

“Maybe we can do a power transfer get some power into the spheres structural integrity and maybe we can give their systems a little jumpstart or we can use the phase cannons and try welding the holes close Follow the cracks and hopefully we can sell up enough holes and cracks for the structure integrity to stabilize or for us to get the people out of their”

Ari nodded. “The exterior is fine and we can’t maneouver inside to shore anything up. Most of the damage inside is from missing pieces, at this point. Not just tears. As to jump starting the deterioration of a black hole… I admit I never heard of such a thing, but you are welcome to definitely see if there is something to that… theoretically of course…” It was a long shot… long as in no one she knew had ever tried to ‘kick start’ a black hole. Make one to study, sure… but keep one from collapsing? This was going to be interesting from a scientific standpoint, to be sure.
