Meanwhile on the shuttle sphere that they were trying to fix … the engines were patched together with spit and baling wire. Yul was helpful in explaining how the engines worked. They were a derivative of a familiar ion drive but ad hoc’d so much that it was hard to see that. Once it was explained then the engineers and XO could better work on it. It would take them traversing a rather skinny ‘Jeffries tube’ to do what needed doing. What that was was essentially either replace or figure out how to reinforce a series of coolant piping that had been corroded, patched, repatched, and re-routed through another set of tubes taped onto it. What was happening was that the coolant was not able to effectively get through the tubing to the engine reactors and that was causing the engines to, at worst, stall, or at best, work at less than 10% efficiency.

T’Leia nodded and approached the CE to get an update on the alien craft to see if they could make it space worthy. She was hoping they would have enough space to evacuate everyone that they could. They could take the negotiators in their own ship but the ordinary people would have to go in their own ship.

Rachel followed the little girl sporting her crooked smile. She looked at the older lady and with no change in expression spoke softly “I’ll see if there is.” She moved her bag to her back and grabbed her medical scanner, fell on one knee and started scanning “My name’s Rachel, I’m a Doctor” She said as she examined the elderly woman.

“Ray Chel. Two names,” Zel said. “You lead your own clan. At least in my youth that was how it worked. But things change.” It was obvious that she was blind. Otherwise she was quite old and frail. “Bel thinks that I can be renewed and my youth returned to me. I am old, doctor. Things have to work a little harder to operate.” Scans confirmed the contrast between young and old and Zel was quite old. There were three systems in her body that were not doing well - heart lungs and her circulation was poor. She looked to have some kind of lung condition that was related to spores collecting in her lungs. That was potentially treatable. Her eyes were fairly advanced cataracts which too could be treated. Both would need the sickbay on the Bonnie, however.

Rachel blinked at the name misunderstanding but chose not to correct it, at least not yet. More focused on the results of her scan her shoulders dropped slightly as she understood the implications “I’m afraid there’s little I can do with the resources I have with me” She said raising the medpack she carried “However I have better equipment on my ship” She explained as she closed her scanner and placed it in one of her unzipped pockets and zipped it closed “If we get you over there I may be able to help you” She said with the pragmatism of a seasoned doctor “When you say that your youth could be returned is that to be taken literally or is it more spiritual?” She asked seriously.

Zey undertook the examination stoically. She heard everything apparently, for her head moved in the direction of whatever sound was made by motion or equipment. “Neither, I’m afraid. Bel is very optimistic and would have me be around forever. No, I am old, and, in time will be sent into the Great Eye.” A think hand touched Grey’s forearm. “After I am gone that is.”

Rachel patted the hand “Of Course, such is the nature of life. But I think that passing in peace is preferable to the alternative, so if we can get you to the Bonnie later I’d like to take a look at those lungs” She smiled her crooked smile “And I assume there’s more I could do for some people at least” SHe said looking around. She thought for a moment of the necessity for travelling medical ships for Starfleet, perhaps after this much talked about union would ever formalise and the fleets were enlarged.
