Rachel gave the other woman a friendly smile. She couldn’t tell any conflict but was sure it was there. With any luck they could get this done before they’d have to make any difficult decisions.

They moved in. Some were calm and some were confused and afraid, and that went throughout all the age groups. When the realization hit that not everyone was going to be going and that some of the sub families were going to be split then it became all the more emotional. Some small children tried to break away to get to their fathers who were out in the tube; two broke away and moved to rush out …

OOC: It looks like we have lost our only CE and engineer as I can’t get a hold of Miriam so I will play an NE to cover for this while we search for a new one.

IC: Nodding to the Commander NE Phillips, toolkit in hand moved to where the engine compartment was and set his kit down. Opening it he took out the tools he needed as he began an assessment of the engines.

There was a premium on seating which were more like old round bar stools at points where there were consoles. Some had brought along things that appeared to be small bean bag pillows. They crowded in as much as they could in the cramped cargo space, leaving a number still out in the round tube like hall.

The engines were ion based and distinctly sub-light. Their general condition was at best poor. They look to have been maintained, but with ad hoc parts, chewing gum and baling wire. At best it may make .1c thoguh that may be a stretch. The life support on it was the challenge - it was not designed for a packed ship. They only had a limited amount of time they could actually be out - and that was less than an hour.

NE Phillips looked back up to Commander T’Leia who was standing just inside the ship’s hatch as she watched the displaced people settling in and glancing at Phillips occasionally.

“The engines aren’t great, Ma’am but we could definitely get the ship moving though not very fast. It’s the environmental that concerns me more. It is not designed to function with this number of people aboard.” He reported.

“Could we get parts beamed down that would increase their efficiency?” T’Leia asked as she absorbed what he said.

Phillips frowned as he considered her question in light of the systems before him.

OOC: Hey Gene, did you miss my posts here about Phillips checking out if beamed down parts would help with the environmental systems?
OOC: I remember seeing it .. doesn’t that count as having replied? <G> .. Ugh ..
IC:

The check on the ship systems were that they were very much cobbled together. The Ion drives were not unknown . P:hillips could see that in a pinch there were a couple of parts that could be quickly replaced to help efficiency (techy word for running a bit smoother) and perhaps eek out a little more output from them. Anything more would need longer work than what they have.

Should anyone peer at the controls of the shuttlepod, they would see a flash indicating proximity of a second shuttlepod. While it was not showing where it was definitely ‘in’ the sphere; the proximity being a comms ‘ping’ where the two shuttle computers were talking to one another, even if the chat was a few bites of information as a virtual hand shake.

Noami happened to glance over to the shuttle pod’s controls. Carefully, she sat down and tried to determine where the signal was coming from. She wished she had paid more attention to Kenny’s lessons over Engineering now rather than flirting with him. While she was busy, she spoke over to the others and decided it was best to draw attention to this. It might actually save more lives.

“Sir, there’s an indication of a secondary shuttle pod. I’m not fully sure where it is, but its definitely in the sphere somewhere.”

She tapped the console on her chair to call to the away teams. [O]Status update… MACO? Baumann? What’s happening out there? We’ve moved closer to assist but We can’t penetrate the sphere much to see what’s going on.[O]

=^=Apologies Captain. We are attempting to evacuate the people here into one of their spacecraft in case our MACO team is unsuccessful. Engineering is having a look at their craft at this time to improve its efficiency.=^= T’Leia said as she watched the activity around her.

Shrant entered and began looking at the craft, looking over at the Engineering Ensign “What’s the status on this thing?”

The Ensign looked up, saw the CE’s rank and insignia and gulped,”Uh, not good sir. Its just too old but we might increase the efficiency of the engines and environmental systems enough with a few parts from our supplies. Might be enough for it to run as long as we need it too. Want to take a look?” He asked standing up out of the way.

Rachel continued assisting the population into the pod with some effort. Not being able to help on any other front was frustrating while at the same time being pleased with the fact that she didn’t have to do anything. when a Doctor had little to do things were generally better for everyone.
