Ari glanced around the bridge. “So what do we do? I won’t make this a unilateral decision.” She made sure to connect to the eyes of everyone on the bridge, from the NE beside the Helm to the Science Chief. “My suggestion is we do what we set out to do… make contact. Leave the ‘known’ safety of our position for the ‘unknown’ closer to the sphere. If we are lucky, we can help create a peace in a warring ecosphere closed off from the rest of the universe. Worse case, we end up doing something ridiculously stupid and perish. I’m a science geek and want to jump in with both feet but this time, I want crewmates, not blind followers. What do you say?”

She knew it was risky, and she doubted any other Captain said ‘Hey guys, I’m ready to lunge ahead… but what do you think?’. She would have taken T’Leia aside to ask her opinion, but this time it was her XO she was thinking of and she worried it was muddling her view. She wouldn’t admit it out loud, but T’Leia and Baumann were the reason she was chomping at the bit to roar in with weapons blazing to save her crew.

“Well, um, Captain…” Alison said as she looked around the bridge at the other crew. “I vote we go in. I can’t do anything more from out here. But, if we move closer, I might be able to finally pick up something that can help us.

“And if nothing else, being closer means we can pull the teams out faster if things go really bad.”

The logic of her first statement made Ari smile. The scientist in her wanted to know more.
But it was the logic of the second statement is what made up her mind. T’Leia, Baumann, and the rest of her away team were over there and she didn’t like them being in an unknown situation.
“Helm, take us in at one quarter impulse. We’re going to move closer. Keep weapons ready, but don’t arm yet. Not sure what they can ‘read’ and don’t want them thinking we are moving in to attack.” She took a deep breath, sat down and scooted to the edge of her seat. Tapping her console, she broadcast to the ship, [O]This is the Captain. We are going to move closer to the sphere to both support the away team and see if we can figure out what’s broken down. All hands be prepared for the worst,[O] she laughed slightly, [O]But hope for the best. Captain out. [C]

The view on the screen switched from a full on shot of grey and black mottled metal to the curvature of what, had it been a world, would have sported an atmosphere. Now it appeared to be the curvature of an asteroid, albeit a very large one. Ahead loomed the open portal that the previous two shuttles had disappeared through. Now, they too swung around to enter.

The moment they did enter the helm would feel the tug of the black hole in the center of the space. Energy readings dotted all about, though, sadly, nothing obvious from the surface of the sphere that looked to be scraped clean leaving only irregular foundations. The energy readings ranged from small, individual locations to larger clusters of energy - none on the surface but all at least a hundred kilometers from the inner surface of the sphere.

“Captain, I’m not really picking up much,” Alison said as she looked over the energy readings. “The inner surface is bare, only a few irregular structures. But I am getting some energy readings from above the inner surface.”

((OOc for the record, we just entered the meteor/asteroid ring surrounding the sphere… we aren’t going to enter the sphere, just get closer....))

Ari nodded as they moved closer. “See if you can find a source, Barr. If we can find the hot spot on this thing, maybe we can find a control center of some kind. Although,” she added, grinning at the Science Chief, “if you can find a more unusual cold spot, lemme know. Maybe it’s where the heat is ‘absent’ that we to concentrate.”

She half whispered a silent prayer to the gods to look after her crewmen. It seemed everyone would need a bit of a hope and a prayer right now.
