Our programming has limited us to watching from the Outside. The Editors have considered the threats from the Outside to be the most imposing and probable, at 96.5%. There are supposed to be Watchers Inside. We do not speak.”

Ari was beginning to figure it out. Something between inside and outside communication had broken down. “Did things work better when the … ummm Editors let the Inside and Outside communicate? Perhaps something is wrong and that’s why you haven’t heard from them for many Spans. If you will allow us to look into it, we can see if there is a way for you to communicate with the Inside again. Would that be acceptable?” She didn’t ask if they wanted it. Wanting implied desire and if he was artificial, then Heirol wouldn’t be capable of ‘want’.

“The Editors analyzed the information that the Watchmen gathered,” Heiro LY said. “Information would be analyzed and results dispersed. For so long the Editors have been silent. Space has been silent but for you. And the Bane. Representatives of the Archon as well, before their wars. They lay beyond this Sector. Or did.” It paused. “Pass and see with my leave. Though the shadow of the Bane remains you are not the Bane.”

As Alison watched the Captain’s interactions with the AI hologram, she continued running scans on the sphere, trying to pull whatever data she could about the inside. Hoping that she might be able to pick up a hint of what was causing all of the problems.

Barr would have some issue with the scans. The ‘hull’ was thick and it was difficult to garner data through that. Technically according to theoretical drawings it did not need to be that thick and that it would have required resources from several systems to construct this - at least. As well, structurally there was a great deal of pressure on the sphere from the inside - likely compensating for the singularity within. Still it was much more than was needed, theoretically.

The Armory Chief’s heavy German accent came through the comms. [O] Rescue Team to Bonaventure. Captain, Dal has identified incoming raiders. He says they are about to destroy critical infrastructure that keeps his people from falling into ‘The Pit’. Commander T’Leia suggests you intercept, if possible. I also recommend we prepare to evacuate those we can, Captain. The dangers here are palpable, and without knowing the complete situation, we are at a severe disadvantage. [O]

Ari reached down to tap the console. [O] I hear you Baumann… we are going to see what we can do. Start evac preparations in case we can’t fix this. [O]

Ari glanced up at the image once more. “There are good and bad people inside the sphere. The bad people are trying to kill the good ones. Do we have permission to protect the good ones? Some bad ones may die, but we will do our best to not harm more than absolutely necessary. And then we can see why the Editors are not responding and why things are getting so bad inside.” She then added as if for clarification. “If we do not help the good ones inside, then they will be killed by falling into the power singularity in the middle of the sphere. If balance inside isn’t resettled and maintained, you may find there is nothing inside anymore… just like there is nothing outside.”

She wasn’t sure if her figuring was right. And she knew her perception of the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ side were based on this single encounter. But she also knew that if something wasn’t done, she would feel guilty for not trying. She waited for the answer and hoped, with all her heart, she wasn’t about to be summarily dismissed and told they were no longer wanted or needed.

Heiro LY paused as though pondering this for some time, or, perhaps, trying to access other information. “Good. Bad. Relative concepts. Help as you judge. Seek the Editor, the Watchmen.”
