“I am Hierol LY, Watcher of the surface-scape. This station has no distress designation. Explain. Explain too the Bane shadow I sense.”

The ship outside was holding station and not bearing any weapons on them, though there was a sensor barrage as it was evidently studying them.

Air’s breath hitched, but she managed to steel her expression. “Bane came to seek our reason for being in this space. We told him we were explorers and he departed. We heard the distress call and investigated to make sure there were not lives at stake. We wish nothing in return and will leave in peace. If it’s allowed, perhaps we can ask for a chance of diplomatic meeting with others of my species so we can understand the uniqueness you represent. Humans embrace all races, even those we have not discovered yet.”

She was no diplomat and she hoped she wasn’t making this worse. Where was T’Leia when she needed the steady head?

“Beware the Bane,” the Watcher said. “When one is without purpose for so long, bad programming sets in.” Then, almost as though it had said something it shouldn’t have, Hierol LY continued. “You present no outward threat and your words are true. Proceed with your programming. I have detected another of your vessels entering the Sphereworld. I will keep the gates open until they depart - else I detect the Bane where I will seal the gates.”

Alison parced through Heriol’s words. Interesting that it referred to their work as programming. Though she was also curious about this entities interactions with Bane, and how that all related to this area of space. Were they in some sort of stand-off? If it was stuck defending this sphere, why hadn’t Bane just attached the sphere?

Ari nodded to the entity on the screen. “We thank you for the allowance. May I ask what is the proper protocol should we happen to come back to learn more about you?” She had heard its comment about Bane but was a bit leery of questioning further. They were being given a ‘pass’. And with crewmen still inside the sphere, she was loathe to look a gift horse in the mouth.

“Approach. We will see. We Watch.” Hierol LY replied. It then inquired to them. “What was the nature of this transmission you received? We heard it not. And yet you say it came from within?” Hierol LY almost sounded a mix of puzzled and put out.

Baumann’s voice came through on the comms behind the message from Hierol LY. [O] Captain, these beings appear in distress and showed us where they say they sent the distress call from. It is closer to the interior of the sphere. They have also mentioned individuals falling into the singularity at the center, which they refer to as ‘The Pit’; and wars, mass mechanical failures, and some place called ‘The City’. They appear unaware of anything outside of the sphere. [O]

“Captain. Perhaps it is possible that the entities inside of the sphere do not know of anything outside of the sphere, because they have been there for all their life. Maybe this entity is some sort of protector of them.” Alison was reaching a bit, but it was the only thing that would make sense to her. How else would they not know what was outside of their small area of space.

“That makes sense…” Ari murmured. Looking back up to the view screen, she cocked her head sideways, looking like a curious bird, as she tried to voice her curiosity without starting an interspecies war. “Heirol LY, is it possible that those within the sphere know nothing of the outside? We are being told that technology inside is failing. People are falling into the center of the sphere and the surface occupants are frightened. How may we help them without risk of harming what you have here?”

Ari glanced at Barr and nodded slightly. The insight from her CSO might be just what they needed.
