Ari’s voice then came over the ship comm to the MACO in the bay, [O] Barber… want you all on standby… that ship is stepping up the pace like it wants a kiss… I want you ready at my command to handle whatever they throw at us. I’ve warned the away team as well. [O]. Her voice was calm, but there was still an undertone of pressure that would let the MACO know there was certainly something afoot… and the science mind of their CO was no longer amused.

Baumann, AC

“Captain, whatever it is looks pretty threatening, it looks like it has quite a few weapons ports all over its exterior,” Alison said looking over the scans. “It also appears to be uninhabited. But, Captain, it is hailing us.”

It approached to well within weapons range of and from the Bonnie. There was a sudden change like a light switch turning, and there was a darkness around the ship. It wasn’t a cloak as it was not transparent but opaque. It came up distinctly as difficult to see on the viewscreen with black on black, or black blip against grey black surface of the sphere. Scans would show a kind of energy field, though distinctly different from any of their technology, be it shields or any of its predecessors.

The hail continued.

Baumann’s voice came over the comms. [O] Baumann to Captain. The individuals here have no inclination as to the nature of the vessel. They seem to be unaware of anything outside their sphere… including us. They are asking what is ‘outside’ besides us. [O]

Baumann, AC

Ari tapped her chair comm, [O] Roger, Baumann… see how quick we can figure this out and give whatever aid they need. Something tells me whatever is out here isn’t happy with us. [O]

She nodded back to Barr, “Open hailing channel… let’s see what’s going on.” She hoped she was wrong. Her gut was telling her that the hailing vessel was ‘guarding’ those inside. And the Bonnie was being seen as a threat. Once more she whispered a quick prayer and hoped she was wrong.

“Yes Captain. So you are aware, it looks like the ship has activated some sort of energy field, something that we can’t see through.”

Alison reached over and tapped a command into the station. “Channel open Ma’am.”

MACO

What looked like a holographic ‘ball’ filled the space in front of the viewscreen easily two meters in diameter. Thin light blue horizontal lines made up the sphere. After only a second or two the sphere looked like it was convulsing, distorting in shape. Eventually, after several seconds it had formed a giant head image of Ari, the Captain.. However, the voice was certainly not hers. It was a harsher tone with distinct mechanical overtones in its, ah, tone. “Who are you? One of your vessels is Within. You bear the shadow of the Bane. What is your allegiance?”

The language was English; comms could tell there was some kind of interlink happening in the language banks of the computer.

Ari certainly didn’t hide her surprise that the ‘vision’ chose to become her. After a moment of shock, she managed to stand up and take a step forward. “I am Captain Bovar of the USS Bonnaventure. We are an exploration ship and mean no harm. We heard a distress call and came to see if we could aid. That was all. We mean no harm or ill will. May I ask who you are?” Her voice was surprisingly steady, but if she had been on a biobed, her vitals would have been sending warning bells to every stat listed.
