he stars stretched endlessly across the viewscreen, a velvet ocean scattered with pinpricks of light. For hours, the SS Sojourner had cruised through the quiet dark, her engines humming steady and sure.

Then came the sound.

A faint, tinny burst broke through the static on long-range communications. At first it was just noise, the kind of cosmic interference every starship officer had trained themselves to ignore. But then the pattern emerged: a repeating code, clipped and distorted, a voice buried in the hiss.

=^=”Captain we are receiving a distress call, nearby system about 10 light years for Tera Nova” =^= The NE at the coms station called.

“Where from?” Marceau asked from his seat in the Command chair, his French accent thick as always. “Is there any other information?”

~ Capt Renault

The NE turned to look at the captain, sorry sir I did not hear you come in. He put the audio out for the bridge to hear. “…This is… Pioneer… requesting aid… system failure… coordinates—”

The signal cut, then began again, weaker still.

Stewart stood at the Armory station and quickly tried to run a scan of their immediate area since they didn’t seem to have caught the coordinates. He also put in a request to the Starfleet database for any ships in the area that had Pioneer in the name…freighter, StarFleet, or any other type of ship.

~Lt. Commander Alexander Stewart CAO

Helena pulled the coordinates that the comms were pinging and put them into the nav computer, to determine the best route and time to get there.

Lt. Laursen, Helm/Navigation Officer

The armory console chirped as Stewart’s database query came back. Across Starfleet’s logs, only one vessel carried that name the SS Pioneer, a United Earth colony ship launched in 2089. Its mission, establish an independent settlement beyond the Centauri corridor. Its last recorded transmission ended abruptly less than a year after departure. Officially, the ship had been declared destroyed in a micrometeor storm.

Yet here it was, calling again after more than six decades.

The computer plotted a course just under eighteen hours at warp four, depending on subspace conditions.

Sensors gave only scraps of information. The signal was bleeding through subspace distortions, making a clean lock on its origin difficult. But it was definitely planetary, not deep space.

On Stewart’s console, the signal blipped once more, and in the static the Pioneer’s call changed slightly, almost like another voice had cut across it, just for a heartbeat.

Aiden came jogging over to the comms console form Aux Science. “Crewman, try applying a series of filters. I’ll play back and try to isolate that second transmission.”

Linguist/Comms Officer

Stewart’s attention was drawn back to the display as it beeped. The data scrolling across the monitor made him pause. He took a moment to digest it then spoke up.

“Captain RRenault, I believe yer want to heart this.”
He looked back down to verify before continuing. His brows were furrowed and he frowned into his beard.

“Sirr, the signal we interrcepted —its identifierr doesn’t belong to any currrent rregistrry. Ah rran it through Starrfleet’s database. Only one match came back: the SS Pioneerr. United Earrth rregistry. Colony ship, launched in 2089. Its mission was to establish a settlement beyond the Centaurri corrridorr. The rrecorrds state it was lost in a micrometeorr storrm less than a year out. Officially declarred destrroyed.”

He let the silence linger before continuing.
“And yet, herre it is—hailing us again afterr morre than sixty yearrs. The signal’s bleeding thrrough subspace distorrtions. I can’t get a clean lock, but it’s planetarry in orrigin, not deep space. Based on currrent Charest, we can interrcept in just under eighteen hourrs at warrp fourr, subspace conditions perrmitting.”He sent the coordinates to the helm.

Stewart straightened, his tone steady but edged with the weight of the revelation.
“Captain, whateverr waits at the otherr end of that signal… it shouldn’t exist.”

~Lt. Commander Alexander Stewart CAO

“Could it be some sort of space echo?” Renault asked. “Sixty years would be a very long time, but… Much of space is still a mystery to us.”

~ Capt Renault

“Ah would suggest a time event of some type, sirr. Rrarre yes, but not unhearrd of. I spent a lot of mah sparre time on my ship rreading the unsealed logs of such. Fascinating!”

~Lt. Commander Alexander Stewart CAO

“It could be any number of things but unless we go check it out in person we can only guess. How dangerous can it be I don’t know for certain but I think the risk is worth the reward of knowledge.” Odina said as she listened to the responses of the others present.

Stewart shrugged, “We won’t know unless we go to see as Ensign Marrshall says.” the elderly Scotsman burred as he continued to scan the area in question as well as to check out the scans for any other ships in the area.
