SS Sojourner

Engineering

El was outside of her shop. She could say for once but she had been assigned to monitoring and optimizing warp power from the Cochranes to and through the warp coils. The latest generation of warp coils that they had updated to in their repairs were proving to be problematic. Smooth transitions were simply not. Or had not been. They had customized the flows to remove most of the choppiness but it still sounded like a shuddery clunk to El whenever they adjusted warp speeds. It was not unlike a standard transmission and changing gears; by now it was hardly noticed by the crew, but to El it was still noticeable. The annoying part about this was that she knew she was being watched by Lt Green.

Since the last mission that resulted in the ship being damaged by asteroid strikes and her deduction that the power flows had been tampered with which the overload and explosion in engineering had caused serious damage, El was convinced it was sabotage. It was subtle but she had defined it in her report. However, base repairs and a team of investigators had determined that it had been only a coincidence of system failures and computer misprogramming which had initiated a very low probability but very high risk series of protocols that, in their words, did not work to expectations. El remained unconvinced and felt this was being covered up and she was seething inside despite her outward sense of peace from her Buddhist training.

But Lt Green took it as an insult to his honor and to El, took it personally. Now they were on a new mission which she had no clue of beyond it being exploratory in some way. Still she worked on and at least in this sense she was closer to her beloved Cochranes.
