He had intended to keep his ‘real’ self secret, his wife too but she was in boot camp at the moment. Starfleet were accommodating but skeptical. He claimed to be an alien but looked like them, passed as them, and he wasn’t infiltrating them? He was… a refugee? He had lived in Ireland for nearly 2 centuries, living through the Eugenics Wars into World War 3, having only left after losing his son and returning to see Humanity taking their first lurches into space as his people had centuries ago. It was a difficult time to be sure, and the Vulcan influence dampened Humanity’s natural curiosity which led to them chafing under the partnership.

He wasn’t surprised that he was seen skeptically but it took him offering to simply serve, not as a lieutenant, not a general, not an admiral, but just as a Crewman. One condition though, he wanted to pass as human. To not be seen as different, and as such he made sure Starfleet agreed to treat his files as just some bloke from Belfast, any medical checks by a person who is in the ‘know’ hence his first assignment to a ship with a doctor for a Captain.

He waited outside of the Captain’s office, a strange sight for a crewman in engineering to be waiting for the Captain, but few questioned it as he rang the bell.

–Eldorin, Engineering–

Marceau was known to be a kind and friendly Captain. On Sojourner, a new crew member, enlisted, officer, high or low rank, outside the Captain’s office was hardly an odd sight. No one would question somebody new meeting Marceau.

“Enter,” came a heavily accented French voice. The ready room was small, more a space at the back of the bridge than a true office, but Marceau had made it his own.

On his desk was a french flag in a desk-sized flag stand, sat next to a snow globe of a city with the name “Marseille” inside the globe. On the wall was a painting of the city labelled the same. The desk was otherwise neat and tidy.

A bookshelf nearby was filled with books. Mostly medical texts, but a few fictional books were scattered throughout. It looked as though, despite the neatness of the rest of the office, books were pulled out and put back somewhat haphazardly, as though someone didn’t have much time and found themselves hastily replacing them frequently.

The man sat behind a desk, his curly brown red hair somewhat unruly, frowning at the workstation. When Eldorin entered, Marceau looked up and smiled what looked like a thin, stressed smile.

His eyes were friendly though, wrinkling slightly as he smiled. He’d have fishermen’s eyes when he was old. Creased from smiling. “*Bonjour, Monsieur… Asam? Yes?” He smiled again and stood, reaching a hand across the desk. He was a somewhat lanky man of five feet eight inches, but well built, with light green eyes.

“Aye, sir. Crewman First Class Eldorin Asam reportin’ for duty, and for that there boardin’ physical, like you’ve been told, no doubt. I do appreciate you takin’ me postin’ here, sir. I know there’s been bad blood ‘tween the Humans and Vulcans since youse first met, and I know it’s a bit of a gamble takin’ on another alien.” Eldorin replied in his characteristic Northern Irish accent as he reached out and shook the captain’s hand. It wasn’t hard for him to take orders and direction from humans, it was only recently that any knew of his true origin and they all meant well.

“I am not in the habit of doubting people because of their heritage, Monsieur,” he said, his accent silencing the h’s that began words. “I appreciate any preparedness I can get. You clearly have no problem serving under others, and I am certain there are expertises you could lend.”

~ Capt Renault

“Not at all, sir. Be it on a ship, fightin’ against tyranny, or fixin’ the gearbox on a ‘66 Dodge truck, it’s all the same to me. Now, where would you be wantin’ me for this check-up, like?”

–Eldorin, Engineering–

“I am not so much a ‘sir’ captain,” Marceau said with a smile. Unless it was a more formal scenario, he wasn’t picky about his sirs and things. “Your… unusual origins are a secret, yes?’ his accent slaughtered the Rs in his words.

Eldorin wouldn’t know him well enough to know, but when Marceau’s accent was this heavy, it indicated he was way over stressed. Emotion pushed the man back towards his native tongue, though he had lived amongst English speakers since he arrived at the Academy. “Then I can do a scan myself. My background is in Medical, I am un medicin tojours. Our medical bay does not have much… Privacy. It is too small. So if you prefer I run a handheld scan somewhere else, I am happy to provide that.”

~ Capt Renault

“Understood, boss. And aye, keepin’ my origins under wraps from the rank and file, that’s the way I like it. I’ve seen how humans can be a wee bit distrustin’ of others, right enough. It’s a trait your lot have had for centuries, so I understand it well. I’m glad to see humanity’s startin’ to grow out of it, but those Vulcans haven’t made it easy, have they? So, thanks for your discretion. As for my scans, whatever’s handy for yourself, like. I’m just a crewman after all, and you’ve a ship to run.” Eldorin replied, truly wanting to not cause a bother and to simply do a good job, but there was always that balance, and always the risk of him being injured and being ‘found out’ should he end up in sickbay.

–Eldorin, Engineering–

“No, they haven’t. Perhaps they will change their mind with the NX class ship under construction.” Marceau sighed, “It will be so much faster than these old things.” “Have a seat, then,” and Marceau gestured to a chair in the small, private room, “and I will do it maintenant.” From the drawer of the desk he pulled out a medical tricorder - not one of the first aid ones, but a doctor’s. He stood and moved out from around the desk.

“I am aware you are not a doctor, but what can you tell me about yourself, medically? I have StarFleet’s files but they are less complete than I like. Just baselines and numbers.”

~ Capt Renault

Eldorin sits down and smiles, understanding the meaning of the French while not knowing the word itself. He nods and says, “For the most part, my physiology’s all there in the files I sent over afore I boarded. One thing you might not have down, though, is that my hippocampus has about ten times the normal pathways, and it’s linked to both sides of my brain with a stronger connection to my auditory senses. Just a wee bit of info that’s never come up before. Besides that, boss, I’m in fairly good health. Broke me left arm and leg in a car crash back in 1988, and Rende patched me up well enough, but the bone didn’t grow back perfectly straight, like.”

–Eldorin, Engineering–

“Even… as you are, I am sure you only had access to Earth technology of that age. It was not excellent.” Marceau commented. He ran the scans against the vitals, and made a detailed note of what Eldorin had said. The scans matched what he said. “You seem healthy from what I can tell.” Marceau said and smiled another slightly stressed smile. “I see little more than some stress, likely a result of this assignment.” He said. He set the tricorder down. “Is there anything else you think I should know?” then he added, “Also, if anything should come up and you are worried about doctors other than me, do come see me.”

“When we got to Earth, myself and the wife brought a few things with us that were a bit more advanced than what youse have now. However, near two hundred years of use, without the tools or parts to keep them right, took their toll, like. We were able to keep ourselves and our wee lad out of the hospitals back then, and keep ourselves in good enough health. But there’s some things we did suffer from, given the poorer medical care we had to use on ourselves.” Eldorin replied as he heard that he was in decent health and was cleared for duty.

The El-Aurian people have always been known as ‘listeners’ and he quickly picked up that the Captain was under an unusual amount of stress and he said simply, “Captain, how’re you findin’ command of this ship, like? Is there anythin’ that concerns you about the crew or the vessel itself?” Now Eldorin knew the chain of command but he also knew that sometimes, if appropriate, it was good for someone to share what was on their mind.

–Eldorin, Engineering–

Marceau didn’t mind the question. He wasn’t so strict on chains of command - save for formal occasion. “This crew is Starfleet’s finest and this vessel is one of our newer. We upgraded from the Bonaventure when I became Captain.” He said. He smiled warmly. “I appreciate your concern, Eldorin.”

~ Capt Renault

Eldorin smiled and nodded calmly, a trait he had displayed time and time again as he said, “Ah, the Bonnie. I hear she was a fine ship. I’m always happy to lend an ear, Captain. Thanks for givin’ me a check-up and a check-in, and for keepin’ it discrete as well, like.” With that, he nodded and exited the room and headed to his shared bunk space.
