Travis stood and went over to the weight machine and began his should pulls. His mind drifted to thoughts of the past and the things that he had seen and done. He loved his job there were always new challenges, but they never prepared him for the emotional things the regrets or the flashbacks the came at odd times with familiar smells and sounds. The weights drifted up and down as he worked his shoulders.
Staff Sergeant Travis Sutherland
M.A.C.ORachel lowered the weights she was using, watching the medic leave with a thoughtful expression. She absentmindedly wiped off some sweat from her forehead with the small towel on her shoulder “If you ever get the chance, Staff Sergeant, I suggest you read up on the Andorian-Vulcan conflict. It makes for interesting reading, growing up I never thought of Vulcans as a particularly combative people and with the time I’ve spent with the blues, well interesting reading in any case.”
Dr Grey- CMO
Sutherland looked over his shoulder continuing to pull the weight sweat now beading up on his exposed traps and arms. It was the doctor who had examined him the first day.
“Sounds like an interesting read Lieutenant, I feel like there is still a lot about the poin..... er Vulcan’s that we don’t know ” he paused , watch yourself sergeant he thought to himself. He tried to press the conversation forward. “They act all high a mighty but there is an air of secrecy about them that gives me pause.” he said as he finished his last rep, moving to the bench press.Staff Sergeant Travis Sutherland
M.A.C.OThe door to the gym whooshed open and an older looking human stepped in. His broad shoulders strained his uniform jacket. He had short cut greying hair and a beard and moustache that were both silver white. He stepped forward far enough that the door closed behind him as he took stock of the gym and its equipment. Mostly mats resting against the wall, skipping ropes with other smaller equipment and the weights. The room wasn’t very large.
His eyes rested on the CMO and the Staff Sergeant.
“Good morning, sorry to disturb ye. Ah am Lieutenant Commander Alexander Stewart, the new Chief Armory Officer. Ah am just checking out the ship before Ah head to the armoury and see to meh men.”~Lt. Commander Alexander Stewart CAO
Sutherland continued to work the weights, “Sir” he said as the man walked in and introduced himself. He shifted his mind back to his work out as the officers would likely banter back and fourth and quickly forget he was in the room, or at least he hoped they would.Rachel didn’t stop lifting her weights but she did look towards the older man and cocked her head, her mess of red curls shifting behind her head “Foos yer doos?” She greeted her fellow Scotsman.
Dr Grey- CMO
“Ahhh music to meh ears! A fella Scots lass. Nae bad, nae bad.” Alexander said with a wide grin. “Be ye a toonser or a teuchter, Doctor?” Alexander made his way over to where the other two worked out and absently took up a 15 lb weight and began to use it on his arms. Bending it up and down easily as they spoke.
~Lt. Commander Alexander Stewart CAO
Standing, Travis shifted the weights around to a press , setting the weight to 300lbs he set the spot bar though we would not need it for this amount of weight. ‘I have know idea what they are even saying’ he thought to himself. His form was good as he pressed the weight up slowly and down just as slow adding a constant load on his muscles.

M.A.C.ORachel snorted at the Aberdonians “Tauchter, Commander. Ah grew up sooth o’ invershnecky ” she explained, although she wasn’t as up to date on the Doric slang, she knew enough to get by. She seemed delighted in being able to let her northern Scottish accent come out, most of her professional career was spent with an approximation of an Edinburgh accent for easier conversation with the less enlightened members of the crew
Dr Grey- CMO
“Ahh, Ah be a toonser meself, from Aberdeen. But me folks come out of the highlands. How do ye find the Sojourner? ‘Tis meh first time on a bata of the stars, rather than a bata of a’mhuir, or the seas.” He said giving Travis a glance as if realizing the man was surely lost in this conversation.
~Lt. Commander Alexander Stewart CAO
Travis let out a steady breath has he pushed his last rep and locked it in place. Sitting up on the bench he set a timer for one minute and rested. His eyes looked between the two officers talking back and forth in what only could be described as an alien language. Though it was certainly some form of English he could only make out about every fourth word or so. He smiled at the man who had been talking his thoughts drifting once again to the loss of his friend. A sadness drifted across his face as his eyes stared off into the distance as if fixated on something but there was nothing there. ‘What had gone wrong’ he thought as he was processing what he could have done differently. He played that day over and over in his mind but no mater how he played it out the result was the same. ‘How could he be gone?’ he thought.
Staff Sergeant Travis Sutherland
M.A.C.ORachel looked between the Armory Chief and the MACO and chuckled “I think we should switch to a more conversational manner” She said her accent fading into a more southern Scottish brogue, the Armory chief would be able to hear the clear Edinburgh in her voice.
Dr Grey- CMO
Following the CMO’s gaze Stewart chuckled, “Aye, that must have sounded like a foreign language to ye, Staff Sergeant. Meh apologies, I was overtaken with nostalgia to speak with a fellow Scotsman. So, how do ye find serving as a MACO out here in space, Staff Sergeant? It must have been a wee bit of an adjustment for ye and yer men.”
~Lt. Commander Alexander Stewart CAO
Sutherland let the final push settle back and he leaned forward. “No problem at all sir, it was hard to follow though” he noted. “Can’t really tell you yet, I was in the bush for the last 15 months, so warm bed three squares, ” he said as a mater of fact,. “As the doc, there I’m seriously under weight” the words certainly did not seem to meet what Stewart was looking at. Sutherland was a mass of muscle, accented further by the veins that were now swollen from his workout. A more thorough look would give way to the extremely low body fat, sunken eyes that he was most likely under nourished from his time in the away. “What about you Sir? how do you like it on ship”
Staff Sergeant Travis Sutherland
M.A.C.O“Ahh, so farr Ah am finding it not so much different than a seafarring ship except one canna go out on deck forr airr.”
~Lt. Commander Alexander Stewart CAO
Sutherland stretched his shoulders out a little pulling one arm across his chest. “I do miss the wind and sou d of nature, the hum of the ship takes some getting used too” he noted
Staff Sergeant Travis Sutherland
M.A.C.ORachel nodded perfunctorily, she’d never actually been on a sailing vessel except a little row boat once when she was eight. she placed the weights down in front of her “It gets easier, space travel. Once you get fully used tah the weird gravity and recycled protein.”
Dr Grey- CMO
“Ahh, aye. Ah do say that Ah much preferr the fresh food.” Stewart said with a nod as he finished his reps. “Well, thank ye both forr the wee chat. Ah must be moving on.” He put away his weights and nodding to both made his way out of the gym.
~Lt. Commander Alexander Stewart CAO
“Sir” he acknowledged the mans exit. He looked over at Grey, “I don’t know, feel’s more like being on a submarine than a sailing vessel,” he laughed as he started his next set.
Staff Sergeant Travis Sutherland
M.A.C.ORachel scratched her head “I’ve read about submarines, It’s my understanding they did not have… well viewports?” She said in a questioning manner, she knew that the navy’s on Earth still had plenty of outdated machinery but she’d never had interest in military matters in that regard so she’d only ever seen pictures of Submarines. She leaned down and grabbed her weights for some more arm training “You ever set foot on one.”
Dr Grey- CMO
“Na” he grunted out as he continued his reps. “Not many of those around anymore, ” he said letting the weights settle back down. “On a ship if you fall overboard at least you might be able to survive, if that bulkhead opens up it’s game over.” he said looking at it as if it were about to. “It unsettls me, suppose I’ll get used to it.” he said smilling shaking off his fear.
Staff Sergeant Travis Sutherland
M.A.C.ORachel considered “Well without any protection you might survive for about a minute, you’ll lose consciousness in a dozen or so seconds but a minutes plenty of time to do something” She spoke with morbid fascination on the subject.
Dr Grey- CMO
Grey was certianly not helping to adress his concerns, he leaded forward his forarms resting against his knees. He thought a moment trying to shake off driffting back to the events of his last mission. “I suppose, the same would be true in cold waters.” he finally responded. “Besides, it’s true in everything we do, In life, or in combat one moment your there and the next.” he did not finsh, he rubed the bridge of his nose as the image of his friend flashed briefly in his mind. “Well your not”
Staff Sergeant Travis Sutherland
M.A.C.ORachel nodded absentmindedly “Aye such is life” She said clearly not noticing anything with Sutherland’s reaction “But the positive is that there’s no limit to new experiences out here.”
Dr Grey- CMO
“Indeed, life is something that would be experienced and enjoyed” he said standing up, “I love a good spontaneous adventure.” he said grabbing his towl.. “How about you what was your last big adventure.?”
Staff Sergeant Travis Sutherland
M.A.C.ORachel considered the question for a moment “Well I was hardly involved in the last operation besides doing cleanup and an autopsy” She said with feigned casualness, she disliked losing a patient more than just about anything “But before that we had some boots on dirt in the Wolf 359 system, met some interesting aliens, shorter beings with large eyes and large noses. Pre-warp if I’m remembering correctly, didn’t interact with them but it was the first new aliens I’d met.”
Dr Grey- CMO
Now that was somehting he could get into, having to engage with his fellow human beings was a hard thing to do. “Now that is something I look forward too, meeting new alian races and or observing them. ” he paused a moment. ” Having to deal with the worst of the human species all the time is something i’m looking forward to taking a break from” he noted.
