The intrepid pilot entered the medical bay, watched closely by the captain. Helena made her way over to an empty exam bed and hopped up. She was favoring her left side, perhaps limping slightly, but didn’t seem to be suffering from any fatigue or muscle spasms. “Dr. Grey, I’m back.”Lt. Laursen, Helm/Navigation Officer
Marceau was right behind her, but stayed near the doorway, out of the way. “She was doing stretches. Said it hurt. I thought it was best looked at.”
~ Capt Renault
Rachel was sitting in front of a small computer on the other end of the small sickbay when the two entered. She spun around in her swivel chair and smiled her wide Chesire grin and stood up “I have just the thing” She ran across the room and grabbed something from the counter “I had this made by a friend in Starfleet Engineering back on Earth” She walked back holding a small rectangle, no larger than a standard hand scanner. She placed it down on a counter and turned it to face the pair, it looked similar to an alarm clock, two screens with simple numbers. Under each screen was a flag, one French and the other the Icelandic flag, both of course blue, white, and red. On the top there were two buttons and she pressed each once and each screen showed the number one in blocky white numbers.
Helena looked at the little display and laughed, “So what exactly are you keeping score of doctor?”
Once she’d proudly displayed her latest toy the Sojurner’s Medical officer pulled out the scanner from her pocket and pointed it at the pilot “I’m also thinking of requisitioning some proper lollies”
Dr. Grey - CMO
“Ohhh…a lollie? I might come in here even when I don’t need to.” The scan showed no signs of muscle fatigue or strain, but there was inflammation and enough activity to suggest deep tissue bruising close to the right femur at the hip joint.
Lt. Laursen, Helm/Navigation Officer
Marceau smiled just a little. “If that’s all it takes I should’ve started keeping those in the med bay years ago.”
~ Capt Renault
Rachel chuckled as she went to the nearest medicine cabinet and rifled through it “My old uh” She said her voice echoing from inside the cabinet “Pediatrician always had lollies when I was a baern, don’t ken if it really helped the other children like coming to a doctor but I think it worked fer me” She closed the cabinet, holding a small vial and returned to Laursen and the Captain. She placed the vial in a hypo and adjusted the output then placed the hypo on the Pilot’s neck and injected “Some anti-inflammatory medicine” She explained “What exactly was the exercise in question, you’ve got a bruise forming up here” She pointed to the upper right thigh.
Dr. Grey - CMO
Helena looked puzzled over the diagnosis. “A figure four stretch for the glutes and outer thighs. I haven’t fallen or hit anything.” She tried to imagine what she’d done. It was the first stretch she’d done when they arrived to the gym. She hadn’t done more than that. Her hand moved down over the spot Grey indicated. Realization dawned on her face. “That’s where the join in the helm chair is. Between the seat and the arm. When we got hit by one of the cargo ships yesterday, I was sort of slammed into it when the ship pitched. It didn’t hurt yesterday, and I didn’t think I’d hit it that hard.”
Lt. Laursen, Helm/Navigation Officer
Rachel raised an eyebrow “They should really consider cushioning those seats” She said mostly to herself as she walked to the main bed console and activated the more detailed scanner to make sure there wasn’t any further damage “Just to make sure you didn’t break anything important.”
Dr. Grey - CMO
Helena slipped off the bed and walked over to the main bed and laid back. The pilot sighed heavily; knowing her luck it was fractured or something.
The scans showed deep muscle bruising and tearing. The bone wasn’t fractured but it showed light bruising as well.
Lt. Laursen, Helm/Navigation Officer
Rachel clicked her tongue “Just some mild bruising, nothing to be too concerned about, I can repair the torn muscles and treat the bruising easily enough” She adjusted the bed to allow the pilot to lie straight and grabbed a Deep Tissue Stimulator and started working on repairs “You’ll need to keep ice there for a little while and try to keep of the leg for a day or two “The anti-inflammation shot should counteract any further swelling but if you feel a lump forming in the next few days come back and I’ll take another look at it.
Dr. Grey - CMO
Helena laid back fully, letting Grey do her medical thing. She knew the routine, ice it and anything abnormal come back. One thing stood out though. A day or two??? “I sit at my station, so I can still go on duty, right? We are leaving orbit for Earth tomorrow.” She needed to be at her station. The other flight trained officers could handle the shuttles and worker bees for the repair. Helena had to be at the helm.
Lt. Laursen, Helm/Navigation Officer
“‘Elena,” Marceau said, his accent silencing the ‘h’ sound in her name. “Non, you will remain off duty for a day at least. We will see how things look the second day. Our regular flight staff can manage that long.” Helena could tell he was a little nervous, but he did trust the crew. He wouldn’t let anyone think otherwise.
~ Capt Renault
Rachel stood up and smiled at the Captain slapping him heartily on the Back “Yer outnumber flygal” She cackled loudly “Don’t be overly concerned, doing nothing means you’ll get to do something sooner. Doing something leads to longer bouts of doing nothing” She put fists on hips “Ye’ll be flying in no time”
Dr. Grey - CMO
But not when she should be. Helena looked from Grey to Renault and back from her prone position on the medical bed. She was most decidedly outnumbered. One of them was stubborn, with would be insane to go against. She sighed accepting the fact she was grounded for the next two days. “Can I go back to my quarters, or do I have to stay here?”
Lt. Laursen, Helm/Navigation Officer
Rachel chuckled “Just sit there for a little bit whilst I see if we have any crutches in storage” She said with her usual lopsided grin
Dr Grey- CMO
Helena almost managed to suppress a groan. She hoped Grey was to far away to hear the muffled sound. Her head flopped back on the exam bed. She glanced over at Renault. “You are not telling the Blackjacks about this. I’ll never live it down. Especially from Billy.”
Lt. Laursen, Helm/Navigation Officer
Marceau chuckled. “You need to never live it down. Makes you more compliant.” He smiled and poked her in the shoulder, “And you better believe I will be making sure you’re using it.”
~ Capt Renault
Helena huffed, “I do not need to be more compliant. I have never been in trouble for behavior or not following orders.”
“Hey, doc? Do I really need crutches? I made it down here just fine on my own.” The pilot called out. Confidently ignoring the fact thr Captain had to help her.
Lt. Laursen, Helm/Navigation Officer
Bump
Rachel gave the pilot a withering glare “I see you walking without crutches and I’ll make certain you won’t be able tah walk without them” She warned although there was no heat in her voice. She stood up and checked the ship manifest for the mobility aids.
Dr Grey- CMO
Helena’s eyes went wide and she nodded once. Just great. Did anyone have any idea how clumsy she was on those things. She was likely to break her neck trying to get down the corridors with them. She flopped back on the exam bed with a sigh that was more a defeated huff. She crossed her arms over her chest. “Not a word, Renault.”
Lt. Laursen, Helm/Navigation Officer
Marceau laughed out loud. “Come on, Helena, they aren’t that bad.” He said. “Is your balance that poor?” He teased, grinning at her.
~ Capt Renault
Helena scowled at him. He knew how bad she was at them. “It’s like you don’t even know me.”
Rachel sent the requisition for a pair of medical crutches in storage then returned to the bed “Someone will bring the crutches up shortly” She looked between the Captain and the pilot an absent expression on her face, one of the common signs that she was thinking about at least a dozen other things, only focusing a minimal amount of her attention on the conversation “Have ye used crutches before?”
Dr Grey- CMO
Helena sighed, “Yes, end of third year at the Academy I had a severe injury to my left leg. I was on them the whole summer.”
Lt. Laursen, Helm/Navigation Officer
Rachel nodded, it wasn’t unexpected, Laursen seemed to be someone who attracted accidents “You know I could requisition a fully padded suit for you with a soft helmet and mouthguard” Her tone showed no indication if she was kidding or not
