“It’s better than what I had to go home to. Just a bit worried about my mum. She misses me and makes it clear me leaving was a mistake. It’s been a few months since the last time I heard from her.” Naomi wrapped up her box before looking into another. Moment she pulled away the adhesive and pulled open the lid, she frowned. Nothing greeted her, but spare parts.
“Uh, I think this one belongs in Engineering?” She tilted it enough for the CSO to get a glimpse of the components. “Likely can take it to that department when we’re done. I hope the rest are right.”
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
“Did you check the inventor list?” Heather asked as she sat her own box down before moving over and scanning the inventory barcode on the side of the box. It came back listed as spare parts for one of the food synthesizers. She tilted her datapad towards Naomi.
“Yup, definitely not ours. Hopefully it’s just an extra box and we aren’t actually missing anything.”
She moved back to the box she had been working on. “You know, we do still have a little bit of time before we are due to leave space dock. You could check in with your mom…”
Cmdr. Grace - XO / CSO
“Yeah, best we learn now rather than later. At least we can get it sorted out now before we leave.” Naomi commented, not glad for more work. She pulled to another box when she caught Grace’s suggestion. Her form stiffened a bit.
“I can, but there’s just one issue. My father. He’s been getting close to retirement and home more often.” Her voice went a bit quiet at the mention. Her mind recalled the injuries she had received during their last fight. She fought back the shiver crawling along her spine. It was the last thing she wanted to think about right now. “Lets just say, it is best him and me don’t meet again.”
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
Looking up, Heather noticed the look on Namoi’s face and just nodded. Probably best just to change the subject at this point.
“So, what’s been your favorite assignment so far?”
Cmdr. Grace - XO / CSO
“Any assignment that doesn’t turn into a life and death situation. Lately, there’s been only a few of those.” Naomi commented as she rummaged though the next box. Just some cleaning supplies. She dragged it over to the storage unit and began to sort it.
“What’s yours?”
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
Heather stood up from the box she was leaning over pulling supplies out. Leaning against the nearby bench a small smile came across her face as she remembered her favorite assignment.
“It would definitely have to be my first. Sure we had the standard time in space at the Academy, but the excitement of the first time flying away as Earth got smaller in the window. My family was pretty close together, so until I went to the Academy I had never been that far from home. And then jumping straight into a ship based assignment after graduation, it was a huge step.”
Heather laughed to herself as she played back the memory. “Oh I was definitely young, and naive. But I was ready to conquer the universe, and no one was going to stop me.”
Shaking her head she bent down to pick up some more items from the box. “Needless to say, it’s been a few years since then.”
Cmdr. Grace - XO / CSO
“I think one of my fellow cadets became sick after we took off into space for the first time. Thankfully, I wasn’t sitting near him. Poor man was so embarrassed and most of my class didn’t let him live it down.” Naomi had an amused smirk cross her lips. She glanced at the number of boxes, the amount dwindling ever slowly down. With a small sigh, she moved to the cold storage unit and popped it open.
“Want something to drink? With us chatting away, I’m sure your mouth is getting dry.”
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
“There always seems to be one in every class, two in mine. One of the instructors was handing out anti-nausea meds, so of course it was two of the biggest guys who figured they wouldn’t need them,” she said with a laugh.
“A drink sounds great to me.” Setting down the most recent box, Heather stood up and stretched her back.
“I really just wanted to get a head start on getting all of this inventoried and put away. But whatever we don’t get to, the rest of the science team can help us get it sorted out when they arrive.”
After a moment of holding the stretch, she stood up straight again looked over towards Naomi. “So which way to the mess hall?”
Cmdr. Grace - XO / CSO
“I think we got a pretty good amount done so far. We earned a break. Besides, if I have to read another label… I might scream.” Naomi stated as she glanced back to Grace, relieved to have a break from it all. She started to move to the exit as she gestured for the CSO. “This way. I’ve finally got the ship layout memorized.”
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
Heather chuckled, “That I can agree with you on. But it is nice knowing that everything will be where we expect it to be when we need it. Instead of hunting through someone else’s lab when you take it over.”
“Have you had a chance to look over the incoming crew roster yet? Do you know any of them?”
Cmdr. Grace - XO / CSO
“I haven’t, but I would be surprised if I did. My friends tend to lean into more wild side of life than join me for space exploration. Any time I talked about science, they fled the room.” Naomi chuckled. “Take a right on the next corridor.”
She inhaled deeply then checked they were on the right track. So far, so good she thought. “Despite that, they were good friends. Got me out of some serious trouble when I needed it. As for making any friends during classes… I struggled with that. I was more focused on making a good impression and meeting the requirements.”
