Heather raised an eyebrow at that comment, “I think I’m going to have to talk to some of those junior officers.”Stepping to the side as Naomi moved past and into the lab, Heather turned and followed her. “I came on about 2 days ago, after finally making it back to Earth. I was on a survey mission out at Neptune when the orders came in to report to the Sojourner.
“So, looking for something in particular?”
Cmdr. Grace - XO/CSO
Naomi didn’t say anything. She held her comments as she pulled up a list, finding much to her relief that the hazardous materials were already secure.
“I got positive news, the hazardous materials are secure. Most of what’s here is equipment that needs sorting. Do you see the test tubes for the lab?” Her eyes were already glancing about the various labels.
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
“Well that’s a plus at least. The last thing we need is to be moving things around, and to spill something hazardous across the lab.
“As for test tubes,” Heather said looking around. “I thought I saw something over there.”
Walking around a few of the cases, Heather pushed one to the side and picked up a case from the bottom of the pile, marked fragile. “Yup that seems about right, bottom of the pile.”
Cracking open the case she did a quick peak inside, nothing seemed to be broken. “Do you have a manifest of what we were expecting to be delivered? All I have are the requests, but no confirmations on what they were going to deliver.”
Cmdr. Grace - XO/CSO
Naomi managed to keep the cringe from her face when she glanced over. The test tube location wasn’t ideal and even hurt her attempt to be positive. She kept her lips tight, listening to the question.
“Yeah, on my PADD.” Immediately the scientist pulled up the list.
“Ugh, this might take a while.” She offered Heather the device to see how extensive it was.
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
Heather looked over the list, it was long, but that was to be expected for a brand new ship. There was a lot of little things that went into the labs that no one ever thought about until you needed it. But that only helped them a little bit today.
“Okay, let’s see how far we can get today. The rest of the science team should be here tomorrow, and we can see about getting their help to finish getting everything put away then.”
Pulling out her own data pad, Heather made a copy of the list. “Why don’t you start in that corner with getting each case sorted out, and I’ll start over on that side.”
Cmdr. Grace - XO/CSO
“I hope it doesn’t take too long. I haven’t eaten since breakfast and was hoping to grab something in the gallery.” Naomi stated as she glanced through the list. She sighed then moved to the next box marked fragile. It was a small collect of droppers, slides, and petri dishes.
“Found the droppers, petri dishes, and slides. Putting them over there.” She picked up the box careful then shifted it over to the cabinets where the delicate things were stored. It was dangerous to risk glass shattering and floating in space.

Heather cracked open a container on her side. “Beakers and flasks in here,” she said as she started pulling them out. She started stacking them in another cabinet.“So what’s your backstory Lieutenant? What brings you here to the Sojourner?”
Cmdr. Grace - XO / CSO
Naomi paused and bit her lip, debating on the answer to give. She had two strong reasons for joining the Sojourner. One was passion and a fairly common reason. The other… far darker. Pushing aside the later option, she cracked a smile.
“Why, the same ol’ reason everyone does. To explore where no one has gone before.” She chuckled then clarified.
“But seriously, I’m very passionate about science. Especially biology. This felt like the best way to pay off my debts and indulge in my favorite subject. Back home, everything has been found and explored. Out here, it’s different.”
She moved to the next box. “I will admit, I never considered the dangers when I was given a choice to join.”
She opened it to reveal nothing but tape. A small frown came over her lips as she told Grace about her about her findings. “Got tape here. Lots of it. Someone overestimated the need for it.”
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
“Well I think part of it is that it’s hard to explain the dangers when we don’t know what is all out there. Sure it’s one thing to read about it in a Vulcan database, but it’s another thing to see it for yourself. And that is a lot of tape,” Heather said looking up at the box Naomi was going through. “I’m not even sure what we’d do with all of that tape....”
Naomi took a moment to consider how to use all this tape when a smirk crossed her lips. “I can think of a few things. However, I don’t think my fellow officers would appreciate it though.”
Naturally she wouldn’t dare risk her position on the ship with pranks, but didn’t mean the thought couldn’t make her smile.
Trailing off Heather cracked open another case. “I’m hoping that we might get to meet a new species that the Vulcan’s haven’t already over documented about yet. Something that we can hold up and say look, we can be explorers and scientists too.”
“We might get luck. Sadly, doesn’t help that the Vulcans got a head start on exploring space before we did. Hopeful, any discovery we make won’t be something dangerous,” Naomi commented as she pushed the tape aside then moved for the next one. Before she could open it, her head turned to catch Grace’s words.
“Ah here we go, test tubes. Where were you wanting these?”
Cmdr. Grace - XO / CSO
“Give them here, I’ll put them up.” Naomi said offering to take the box with out stretched hands.
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
Heather held the box out for Naomi. After she had taken it, Heather cracked open the next box to find it full of microscope slides and other small glasswares.
“I don’t know, I wouldn’t mind a little bit of danger. It’s been kind of quiet doing my last rotation back on Earth. Have you spent a lot of time out in space?”
Cmdr. Grace - XO / CSO
“It’s fine, until you get bumped on the head all the time. Then it becomes bothersome.” Naomi began to put away some of the stuff in her boxes. She was quiet for a moment, “I do. Home’s… not my favorite place to be.”
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
Heather nodded knowingly. “Well hopefully you can consider the ship a different type of home then.”
Cracking open the next box she started putting away the supplies into another cabinet.
Cmdr. Grace - XO / CSO
“It’s better than what I had to go home to. Just a bit worried about my mum. She misses me and makes it clear me leaving was a mistake. It’s been a few months since the last time I heard from her.” Naomi wrapped up her box before looking into another. Moment she pulled away the adhesive and pulled open the lid, she frowned. Nothing greeted her, but spare parts.
“Uh, I think this one belongs in Engineering?” She tilted it enough for the CSO to get a glimpse of the components. “Likely can take it to that department when we’re done. I hope the rest are right.”
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
“Did you check the inventor list?” Heather asked as she sat her own box down before moving over and scanning the inventory barcode on the side of the box. It came back listed as spare parts for one of the food synthesizers. She tilted her datapad towards Naomi.
“Yup, definitely not ours. Hopefully it’s just an extra box and we aren’t actually missing anything.”
She moved back to the box she had been working on. “You know, we do still have a little bit of time before we are due to leave space dock. You could check in with your mom…”
Cmdr. Grace - XO / CSO
“Yeah, best we learn now rather than later. At least we can get it sorted out now before we leave.” Naomi commented, not glad for more work. She pulled to another box when she caught Grace’s suggestion. Her form stiffened a bit.
“I can, but there’s just one issue. My father. He’s been getting close to retirement and home more often.” Her voice went a bit quiet at the mention. Her mind recalled the injuries she had received during their last fight. She fought back the shiver crawling along her spine. It was the last thing she wanted to think about right now. “Lets just say, it is best him and me don’t meet again.”
-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci
Looking up, Heather noticed the look on Namoi’s face and just nodded. Probably best just to change the subject at this point.
“So, what’s been your favorite assignment so far?”
