snip and bump
El watched the three ships move in and pass quite close to them. That seemed .. rude of them to do it. Sure space was big but that looked intentional. “What do you think?” she asked the others there. “We might have to reset the data that the tactical station would have to be less detailed to enable the communicators to be able to handle the transmission. Or even, what if we set up a hand scanner to take the information and translate it into a comms signal and hook that in series to it to then transmit down here and reverse engineer it?”

NE Harry spoke up again, “..I mean yeah we can but we still have the latency issue, equipment just isnt up to snuff to handle the conversion speeds. In fact that method probably would be even worse then a wireless carried signal array. Fastest option would be to have an open comm line directly to the bridge, either by hand unit or direct comms. Orders could be relayed then by the armory officer there and we load target and fire here. There’s still a delay but less chance of misfires or misses I would think..” he said. “..Sort of like old oceanic fighting vessels on Earth in the early 1900s or such..”

GM CockRoach

El struggled to process how that would be faster by essentially doing a kind of relaying of shouted orders to fire cannon and the like. Those ships were dreamy with their tall masts and rugged crew. She glanced at the computer systems here and beyond where the cargo ships lay. At that time those ships were traveling at not great speeds and that within eyesight of one another, not traveling at relativistic speeds seen only by sensors. “How quick can you target and fire?” An open comms may be the best, at least during combat. She’d have to ask the chief about that and whether there would be any safety or security issues around that but that might be their best option. She let a small frown cross her features. She was used to jury rigging things on the old Bonaventure but this was a new ship. Had nobody thought of secondary lines to something as important as tactical features from the bridge?

”..We’re pretty well drilled, so roughly 5 seconds give or take upon an order being given from the bridge if by verbal orders. To compare a manual target from bridge relayed by the computer then processed by us non-verbally would take the same time and another 2-5 seconds for us to input it and fire..” He said.

GM CockRoach

El scratched absently at an itch along her hairline. “Otherwise it is automated? The orders come, the tactical officer would input and down here it is automated to lock and fire?” She supposed an open comms would work but then that would essentially bypass the need for anyone at tactical. She supposed too that they would be useful for relaying sensor information. She pursed her lips in frustration. “Couldn’t the one at tactical be faster doing the work down here while utilizing an open comms from the bridge?” She presumed that the one on the bridge would be quicker at the ‘drill’ and would do his or her thing there while at a the same time the boys down here would be free to do their thing without the extra step of doing what the bridge officer would do.

Then came the notice through her comms unit that they were to go to General Quarters, at least the engineers. The message had come from Bekele and she was ordered to remain here. So much for time to work out a best solution. Now it was time for make do. As one of her instructors said, when in a situation don’t worry about what will be in two days. Think in the next 10 minutes. She acknowledged the GQ order and turned to the station. “Communicator it is,” she said to the small group there. A little while later ..

=^= Green to Armory. Ensign Serinde report. =^= That was expected. She was kneeling down making sure that her placement of the communicator wasn’t going to interfere with the electronics in the immediate region and vice versa. She replied.
=^= Rigging up a communicator here Lt. The Armory boys say they can listen in and target as the orders are confirmed from the bridge with only a small loss of time and no loss of accuracy. Having this on an open channel, frequency 387.3, encrypted. =^= She pulled out a length of duct tape and tore it with her teeth to secure it to the console.
=^= Confirm 387.3 Encrypted.=^= While she waited for a coming test or at least knowing that the communicators were linked she ran her scanner to ensure there was not electronic interference to mess with this option.
- El, Eng

=^= Green to Serinde. Comms check. =^= Her scan was interrupted but it looked fine. Systems were pretty well shielded for normal comm signals. She leaned in closer even though she knew the communicator would pick her up from a distance. Was that something that was genetic for that sort of thing?
=^= Serinde here. Loud and clear Lt. =^=
She turned away from it and asked, “Volume and position all good?” The command console was beside it. She checked to make sure it was secure and with a tap she locked the frequency so as to not have it accidentally be changed. THAT would be a problem if that happened.
=^= Confirmed all good with the armory people, sir. =^=
=^= Have them stand by and you remain there. There might be come trouble. =^= She turned in their direction and one gave a thumbs up.
She sighed and let out a breath. She would just be in the way here. =^= Yes, Lt =^= She sighed again and moved to the side to keep out of the way. Left with little to do and wanting rather to be in engineering with the rest of her peers she did what unconsciously came to her .. she chewed a nail.

When the red alert sounded it seemed .. loud in these cramped quarters. That would be hard to talk over, she thought, but then they could still shout to be heard. The MACOs there moved quickly into what she could see as well drilled positions awaiting orders. One was near the targeting computer where the communicator had been set up and two were over by the forward torpedo launcher; somewhere aft she knew there was a matching launcher also manned. At least here there was a mating of the tactical targeting systems so they didn’t need the communicator. Unless this one went down. That was something that was not considered but then they had only time to do this one and test it. They were focused and had an intensity that she had seen before; El was forgotten. Feeling superfluous and in the way she hugged the bulkhead to stay out of their way, but watched everything. It was not ill considered to think that she may not be called upon to help.

El could hear what was going on on the bridge by virtue of the open communicator. The armory ‘boy’s were tense at least by El’s estimation. They could hear the conflict but data was not clear in coming down to them. They were, in effect, locked and loaded but .. waiting. El could feel the ship move, insubstantial changes in the feel of the decking with the inertial dampers adjusting to course changes and the thrum of the engine changes in the subtle tones that were close to her. They looked at her and one gave a ‘what?’ look in her direction. She launched from her corner space and checked the communicator status. It was fine. What was going on on the bridge?

She punched the comms on the panel, not the communicator in case it was the problem. =^= El to bridge. We need coordinates through the comms for targeting. Is there a problem with the communicator? The one here is showing green. =^= She felt a sense of anticipation and that she was in a kind of nerve center for this battle, but unsure of her role precisely. Her hand brushed across a lip to soothe a phantom itch as her eyes darted across the controls. They were still good. What was going on in engineering? That was the stabilizing center for the ship right now for systems. Who was commanding there? Was it the Lt? She thought the chief was on the bridge. Perhaps she should be there. But she was here; perhaps that would make the difference. But was her ‘fix’ flawed? Was what she did going to be the reason for their deaths?

There was a crackle and the sound of something bass and thumping once then twice on the line. El wondered whether it was broken or not and her heart skipped a beat. It wasn’t working. She’d failed. She frowned and a wash of frustration coursed through her as she balled a fist. Then, as quickly as it came it ended when she heard NE Gunner over the line ..

=^=Armory target the two starboard ships, sending coordinates now. Aiming to hit them between the nacelles to overload their hull plating and short out their engines. =^=

Her fist pumped the air in a ‘yes’! motion as relief flooded through. She could see one of the armory boys at the console in an instant and working the controls. The bridge could hear the exchange, El knew, as the line was open.

=^= Starboard vessels coordinates input. Locked. Targeting computer programming course correct =^=
=^= Coordinates green. I have a lock. Firing. =^=

There was a whine that was shrill and much louder than El had expected as they fired. It jolted her in surprise and in that moment longed for a porthole to look out to see what happened even though she knew it was a lost cause due to how quickly the ships were moving and how far away they would be - it would be like a beam firing at a dinner plate at the far edge of the field. Still she waited in anticipation for the result, her blood up in excitement for the conclusion.

OOC: From the bridge shot ..
IC:
=^= Armory, second ship straight ahead. Same location, all forward canons. Fire when ready. =^=
NE Gunner

El heard that and some of the muttering from the bridge. It seemed like muttering as it wasn’t entirely in the field of speech with the communicator. She frowned thinking she needed to adapt that and deactivate the sound masking at the point of the communicator or adjust the programming to mask mechanical sounds but keep voice to hear more of what was going on. In short, however, a frown set on her face. They had not done much and from the sounds of it they were taking more than they were getting. El wanted to act and ‘do’ something but that was not happening. Not here. The armory boys were focused and moved as a semi oiled machine.

The armory ‘geek’ as El had labeled him who was at the communicator and coordinating the firing controls made a quick adjustment. El recalled his name on his uniform as, ironically Sargent. She wondered if that created any .. issues and quickly thought of him, a corporal by the stripes, going back and forth with his Sergeant.
=^= Forward cannons fire! =^= Sargent called out. This was repeated by the other crew and again the ship whined as it fired.

El felt the ship veering, the inertial dampers lagging just enough to feel it. That must have been a quick twist. Even though she didn’t need to her hand went to the bulkhead to steady herself. It may have been good timing for she felt the impact not far from her but decks above followed quickly by another, this time below them. “We’ve got a hit!” Sargent said. “Looks like that freighter is out of action.” He was attentive to the scanner but shook his head. “Not sure what happened. Another freighter looks damaged. Wasn’t us. The other is running. Out of range now. Keeping a lock on the closest freighter just in case.”

Unsure what to make of it El hopped down and looked over Sargent’s shoulder as he ran a playback focused on the second ship. “I don’t see anything. It just seemed to explode,” Sargent said as he played it back again all the while shaking his head.
El’s finger shot out. “There. Look.”
“At what?”
“There. That tiny light. Torpedo propulsion, I think.” Sure enough on freezing it there were two small dots against the blackness. Sargent zoomed in and put it on slow forward. By now the other two MACO’s were looking too. One whistled as they impacted.
“That’s big,” one said. “Regular torps don’t do that much bang.” El felt crowded by the three and wondered what was next. The last two hits felt like they did damage and she was sure that she did hear a fwump from the hit abovedecks that may have been vacuum related. It wasn’t the bridge. She’d have known that from the communicator that was still open. She imagined the rest of the team were quite busy right now and a pang of guilt ran through her as she felt she should be helping. More than here anyway.
