Or even, what if we set up a hand scanner to take the information and translate it into a comms signal and hook that in series to it to then transmit down here and reverse engineer it?”

In fact that method probably would be even worse then a wireless carried signal array. Fastest option would be to have an open comm line directly to the bridge, either by hand unit or direct comms. Orders could be relayed then by the armory officer there and we load target and fire here. There’s still a delay but less chance of misfires or misses I would think..” he said. “..Sort of like old oceanic fighting vessels on Earth in the early 1900s or such..”

El struggled to process how that would be faster by essentially doing a kind of relaying of shouted orders to fire cannon and the like. Those ships were dreamy with their tall masts and rugged crew. She glanced at the computer systems here and beyond where the cargo ships lay. At that time those ships were traveling at not great speeds and that within eyesight of one another, not traveling at relativistic speeds seen only by sensors. “How quick can you target and fire?” An open comms may be the best, at least during combat. She’d have to ask the chief about that and whether there would be any safety or security issues around that but that might be their best option. She let a small frown cross her features. She was used to jury rigging things on the old Bonaventure but this was a new ship. Had nobody thought of secondary lines to something as important as tactical features from the bridge?

To compare a manual target from bridge relayed by the computer then processed by us non-verbally would take the same time and another 2-5 seconds for us to input it and fire..” He said.

El scratched absently at an itch along her hairline. “Otherwise it is automated? The orders come, the tactical officer would input and down here it is automated to lock and fire?” She supposed an open comms would work but then that would essentially bypass the need for anyone at tactical. She supposed too that they would be useful for relaying sensor information. She pursed her lips in frustration. “Couldn’t the one at tactical be faster doing the work down here while utilizing an open comms from the bridge?” She presumed that the one on the bridge would be quicker at the ‘drill’ and would do his or her thing there while at a the same time the boys down here would be free to do their thing without the extra step of doing what the bridge officer would do.
