The doors slid open and an ebony-skinned figure ducked under the doorframe and stepped onto the bridge. Mthunzi Nkosenye, the new Armory Chief, surveyed the bridge and it’s occupants with a critical gaze before stepping towards the Ready Room door and pressing the chime. He stood tall, his head almost to the ceiling, and waited for the door to open so he could meet his new Commanding Officer.

Marceau let the door open and then beckoned the new Armory Chief inside. “Lieutenant, welcome to the Sojourner,” he said, looking up at the very tall officer. He stood and offered a hand for a handshake, “I am Captain Renault.”

After what seemed like ages at the door, Nkosenye was relieved to find the Captain amicable and welcoming. Looking down, and with a voice that seemed to emanate from some deep cavern somewhere within him, Nkosenye took the offered hand in his, dwarfing it, and said “Thank you, Captain. I am glad to be serving here.”

Even his hand was ginormous. Marceau was not tiny by any means, though not particularly large, either, and Nkosenye made him look very little. “Have a seat,” He said, gesturing to a chair, maintaining his composure. “I am aware you have served on starships before, but have you done deep space missions previously?”

Nkosenye inclined his head. “I have, yes. Exploratory missions and a few directed… let us say ‘observational’… runs along the border of Federation space. I am looking forward to this assignment, however. I have not been tasked with such an extended tour before.”

Nkosenye, AC

Marceau nodded, “Good. We may not always have good contact with Earth, I find wanting to be here makes it easier to deal with.” He considered his next question for several moments. “What do you see as your primary task on this ship?”

Nkosenye thought for a moment and then said “I believe my role is muti-faceted. Primarily, I am tasked with maintaining the safety of the crew and the security of the ship. In the physical sense, I keep our weapons and defense systems ready, and I oversee the mediation of conflicts between the crew. On another level, I believe my presence in this role is to provide stability and continuity for the crew. Someone who will be consistent, fair, and available. I, like the rest of the Command officers and Department heads, am here to ensure the crew as a whole feels comfortable enough and supported enough to do their day-to-day without worry… as much as we can, of course.”

OOC: sorry for the incredibly long wait.

IC: Marceau nodded. “We are not going into deep deep space, at least not yet, but we are still likely to encounter many unknown threats or unpredictable situations. I believe it is best we are well prepared for these kinds of things.” He considered for a minute, and then, “Is there anything you would like to know about me, or the ship?”

“I grew up next to the largest nature preserve on the African continent and spent the vast majority of my youth exploring that area, often alone. Unpredictability is not something I am unused to.” Nkosenye said with a very slight grin. “As far as the ship, I have studied the schematics. I think I have as much of a grasp of the ship as I can without physically familiarizing myself with it, which I plan to do over the next week. But for you, Captain, I would ask a few things. First of which would be why you approved me specifically for the position?”

“You have an impressive track record with the Fleet. I am lucky you were assigned to me, and not to another ship. Your skills are what I thought we would need for a mission such as ours.” Marceau responded. “If you need any help familiarizing yourself with the ship, please do ask.”

Nkosenye inclined his head in acknowledgement. “Indeed I will, sir. Have you been in Command of a starship before here, Captain?” he asked directly.

Nkosenye, AC

“Non,” answered Renault honestly. “The Sojourner is my first command. I did, however, serve as first officer on a starship.” He tried to keep nervousness out of his voice. It would not do to let people think he wasn’t confident in his abilities. “And I’ve spent most of my career in space in one way or another.”

Nkosenye leaned forward and said “Are you nervous? I certainly would be… and there is no weakness in admitting such, Captain. I would even go so far as to say that it would be odd if you were not.”
