[snip]

Ensign El would end up stepping out into the tech room where to her left a bloodied dead NE Samuels lay in a pool of his own blood and mangled face, a large chunk of the right side of his face and been ripped and chewed off with heavy threads down his neck and left shoulder. Deep claw marks had ripped his right of face and forehead, and his upper uniform. The offending creature it seems judging by the blood trail back up the wall and back into the vent showed where it had come from and fled from.

El stomach reeled from the sight of Samuels. Her annoyance at him evaporated in the grim sight of his torn face, her mind mixed with thoughts of fight and flight and a repulsive familiarity and tang of blood. But Samuels was not of the Bloodborne and not a Warden; she had had a tapioca pudding with him one breakfast last week. Her eyes gazed to the grating and she balled her fists. It was gone. She could hear the blood pumping in her ears and the sounds of a dog’s bark and the skittering in the ducts and as she took a step toward Samuels …

Just outside the closed decon tech door a muffled growl and barking sound was heard followed by muffled foot falls....

Having gathered herself Heather was quick through the door after El, grabbing her shoulder and pulling her back.

.. a hand grasped her shoulder and pulled her back. Reacting, El spun as though to strike but, in a moment, recognized the Commander and stalled her motion. A rush of emotion played over her face. Here there was a foe but it was gone. Her ‘foe’ was herself and she strove to pull herself together and struggled to hear what the Commander was saying.

“Don’t. We don’t know what is in there, or what it may have left behind. Plus,” she said looking up at the noise coming from the other side of the tech room door, “it sounds like help is on its way. Keep them out of the room if the door opens.”

There was an order. She could do that even though she wanted to see if she could help Samuels. The latter looked bleak but events were already in motion. As was the door that opened. One of hers, Petty Officer Walters came in. El could see his eyes wide and, if anything were possible, they grew wider as he caught sight of Samuels. Then he turned green and backed off even before El could say to do otherwise. She could hear him retch just out of view, something her own stomach had warred against as well. A small dog came in, fearless in her gait. That was the one Rick had adopted. Someone else from Science was there … what was his name?

Leaning back she tapped a nearby comm panel.

[O]Bridge. Cmdr. Grace in Decon. We are going to need a med team here ASAP. There has been an, well, I’m not sure what to call it exactly.[O]

Cmdr. Grace - XO/CSO

Laursen’s voice came back over the comm [O]Acknowledged Cmdr.[C]

[O]Sickbay this is the bridge. Cmdr Grace needs a medical team in Decon ASAP.[C]

Rachel almost ran into the Sickbay door in her haste to leave, only avoiding catastrophe because she had to slow down to grab her medical kit. Her size and weight made running through the relatively small corridors of the Sojourner an awkward affair and more than a little loud.

El let the doctor pass; the Commander had called for that help after all, as well as with security. This small room was going to get pretty crowded pretty fast.

As soon as she arrived, taking only a moment she pushed past the group and went to the ground next to the body of NE Samuels, the medical tech was one of the few people she had within her division. She knew instantly what the open neck wound and amount of blood meant but it didn’t stop her from tossing her scanner and medical kit on the ground and grasping the open wound with both hands to stem the bleeding. She could feel what the scanner was telling her, no pulse. There was no more arterial spray.

Dr. Grey - CMO

A moment later the comms chirped again. =O=Security to Decon.=C=

Laursen, pilot

Heather had just opened her mouth when Grey slid in next to NE Samuels. She could tell that is a futile effort, but she couldn’t fault the doctor for trying. Even if she was going to make it harder for them to try and track whatever got the NE.

“Doctor, I know this is tough, but we are going to need your help to figure out what attacked him. Are you going to be okay?”

Cmdr Grace - XO/CSO

Rachel looked up from the corpse having just closed the young man’s eyes, she gave the first officer a confused expression “Hmm yes I’ll be fine, I can delay emotional processing for at least three days” She didn’t have the same brightness in her tone but she seemed more lucid than normal. She grabbed a wipe from her pack and was carefully wiping the blood off her hands “I’ll need his body brought to the Sickbay so I can do an autopsy” Rachel stood up with ease, picking up her scanner as she stood.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Heather nodded. “We also need to get cleared from our time on the planets surface.”

Looking around at the assembled people on the other side of the decon tech room she noticed Lt. Eric standing there. “Lieutenant, help get the ensign down to sickbay so an autopsy can get started, also…” She trailed off as she finally noticed Nessa standing there. “Is that a dog?”

Cmdr. Grace - XO/CSO

Nessa once the door opened and people began to get to work, sniffed the area, then gave an attention getting bark up at the air vent which had been where whatever had attacked Samuels had come from and then escaped too. A moment later two NE armory officers came in making the inner tech room to decon start to get a bit crowded. “..What happened in here?” One of the young armory officers asked, evidently seeing the mess of blood and confusion had done little to help matters, “..Oh God is that blood? Is that NE Samuels?!?” he said then covering his mouth he dashed into the hall to vomit his stomach contents into a support pillar corner outside.

… which mixed rather colorfully with what was already there from Rick ..

The other nurse from earlier came up behind, looking in grim, “..Jesus..” he said crossing himself out of reflex it seemed of the old Earth traditions. Swallowing his own bile he looked up then at where Nessa was trying to get folk’s attention. “..Looks like whatever this thing is went back into the vent bigger then it came out as.” he said indicating the vent grills bent inwards some with flecks of blood and muscle tissue on it. With a trembling hand he raised a medical scanner to it. “.. Most of its....it is Samuels blood and ....and you know..” he said. Then lowered the scanner, and reached into a med kit to pull out a sample gathering unit. Pulling back a thread of muscle and what seemed something leathery he held it up in the vial. “..This isn’t though, unless Samuels was part reptilian.” he said, turning back to Grey, “..Ma’am, I should get back to medical, this sample might be enough for me to run a better ID scan and help star refining internal scanners for looking for whatever this thing is..” He said.

El, Eng

“Do it,” Heather said from where she still stood by the decon chamber. “Someone will have to explain the dog to me later, but in the meantime, if she can track it, let’s see what if we can find the creature. In the meantime, can someone please clear us so we can get out of here?”
