She finessed with the winch then opened one of the crates that that had held the equipment and fussed about until she came up with two cranks that looked not unlike an old car jack appliance. Affixing them to each side of the winch she opened a small operating panel looking for the manual release switch. Finding it she pushed the button that dropped it from powered control to manual. Turning to the other two she squatted by the beast and pointed. “It’s on manual. Two can use this at a time here, one on each side. The pulley system is pretty inefficient but at least on manual it has a lock so we won’t drop it.” She was putting on her gloves. “I’ll be at the hole and helping on the pull while you two work the crank.” Shuffling over to position at the hole El found her position and gripped the taut line. Looking back she waited for the others to get ready. “On three. One .. two .. three,” she said, then pulled ..

Heather nodded as she moved over towards the crank with the armory chief. Grabbing the handle she started turning the crank as El counted out, helping to take the slack out of the line as the line was pulled back out of the ground.

As they kept working the crank, all Heather could think of was that at least she wasn’t going to have to workout for a few days after this.

Hauling up the probe took a good almost 20 minutes, with the added gravity pulling down on it from the planet it was certainly a lot more work then they would have had to do normally. Finally though after 20 minutes the probe was on the surface. Sure enough the power cell in it too was dead as dead could be. The on board storage medium though once slipped into a reader back on the ship should be safe and sound provided no electrical damage had been done to it.

The MACOs meanwhile found no sign of life intelligent or otherwise during their watch. With the winch and probe in hand they could pack it back up and return to the shuttlepod and the ship then.

After finally pulling the probe backup, Heather sat down on the ground nearby. She fished a water bottle out of her pack, and took a look drink before offering it to El.

“Any reason we couldn’t examine the probe back on the ship? Probably best to get back to the rendezvous with the shuttle pod.”
