Several hours and a pointless boarding party later, the small ship had been discovered to be the wreckage of a Nausican pirate ship. The hull was damaged, the engines dead, and escape pods jettisoned. No crew remained on board. There was nothing of use or value on board, either.Marceau had gone over to the ship with the boarding party on a shuttle not piloted by Helena, and the fill in pilot had nearly missed the docking port on the other ship, scaring Marceau half to death in the process. The mission had otherwise been uneventful.
Upon return, Marceau gave orders to continue their previous heading, and then turned command of the bridge over and left to check if Helena had returned from Sickbay.
~ Marceau
Helena had felt the bay doors open and knew a shuttle left. She had no idea Marceau was on the shuttle, but it sucked. It should be her flying it. She didn’t say a word about it though. Her due punishment for not taking care of herself. She left sickbay and returned to her room because Marceau wasn’t done yet, and letting herself into his quarters was a little telling.
She figured Marceau would check her cabin when he was done.
Helena
Marceau checked her quarters first. He knocked and waited for an answer. When the door opened, he looked about as terrible as he had that morning. He smiled at her and stepped in, “You didn’t miss much. There was nothing on that ship. Just a Nausican wreckage.”
~ Marceau
Helena was stretched out on her bunk reading her copy of Edith Hamilton’s Mythology. She smiled at him as he entered, but it quickly disappeared. Her book made a thwump and thud as she closed it and dropped it to the mattress next to her. “Nausican?” Her legs swung over the side of the bed as she stood in a rush (obviously faster than her body was comfortable with, but she didn’t stop) and moved the few feet across the room to the clothes locker. “Wreckage…a Nausican wreckage?” She grabbed a uniform out of the locker and proceeded to strip out of her casual clothes and pull on the jump suit.
Helena
“Helena, wait, no. You need to rest.” Marceau came up to her and put his hands on her shoulders. “No uniform for you.” He looked at her, trying to get her to meet his gaze, “There were no Nausicans left on board. They were wiped out. Our pilot who is on duty is flying us away from here, back towards our original heading.” He was watching her critically, with that doctor-look he used when he was treating her. “You’re moving too quickly. Your muscles are twitching. You need to sit down.”
~ Marceau
Helena didn’t have a choice but to stop as he put his hands on her shoulders. She did look at him, and she was scared. She knew first hand how ruthless and cruel and implacable Nausicans were. “Bixby has no combat experience. Just training simulations. If they come back you need me at the helm…Nausicans,” she whispered it like they might appear in the door way. “You should warn Cpt Baumann.” Of course Marceau knew that, Helena wasn’t given to irrational actions even when afraid, but Nausicans were personal. He said she needed to sit down and she thought he was crazy. She stared at him, “I need to be at the helm.” She said it slowly and clearly, trying to keep panic and fear at bay.
Helena
Marceau’s stomach felt like he was going to hurl all over again. The shuttle debacle had nearly been enough to put him over the edge on its own. Now he had to manage Helena’s panic so she didn’t make herself worse. He pulled her into a tight hug, pressing her against him. “Baumann knows already, just in case. Bixby is a fine pilot or he wouldn’t have been assigned Sojourner. How do you expect him to get experience if you never let him try?” He held on to her and shook his head against her, his fluffy, curly red hair brushing against her face. “We will be fine. I… I don’t like them either but we have a whole crew to help us. Just like you were telling me earlier.”
~ Marceau
Helena wrapped her arms around him and hugged him. Forcing herself to relax in the stillness. He was right her muscles were twitching, but that could just as likely be from adrenaline, but there wasn’t need to worry him more. “I expect him to get it when it’s not Nausicans.” Helena knew that was unreasonable and there was a hint of a laugh, but only barely. It had been years ago, but she remembered it quite clearly. She wrinkled her nose as his hair brushed her face. She pressed her face into his neck, and he could feel her breath shudder and feather across his skin. “I know.”
