EARLY (0500) the next morning after treating the hot shot pilot, Lt Laursen and Cpt Renault entered sickbay again. Laursen looked a little better, but the Captain not so good. Laursen was doing her best to help him, without hurting herself. “Dr. Grey?” the pilot called. “Captain’s sick. He brought me a tray yesterday to make sure I was following your orders. He came this morning to see if I was sick too. I feel okay, but he doesn’t.”Laursen, pilot
Marceau was trying really hard not to accept help from Laursen, but he was partly hunched over, clutching his stomach. His face was flushed and he was sweaty. “I’ll be fine, it’s just a little bug. I just want to make sure no one else is going to catch it from me,” Marceau said, shooting Helena a look. “And make sure Lieutenant Laursen didn’t catch it from me already.”

Rachel was sitting in front of a console working on something that seemed to involve a lot of text and diagrams. She turned around slowly, for a moment concern flashed across her face until she heard the Captain putting on airs. “There’s an old-Earth legal adage my mentor loved to bring up” She walked over to the Captain and grasped under his arm, she didn’t seem to have any issue carrying his weight “A man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client. Doubly so for doctors”
Marceau scowled. Helena had essentially said the same thing. But he was in no mood to argue further and let her lead him to the biobed, still clutching his stomach. “I feel like I might throw up.”
After walking the short distance from the door to a nearby bed and gently pushed him on it “You sit” She said pointing at the pilot without looking in her direction, the doctor seemed more lucid than usual. She pulled a scanner from her coat pocket and started a standard cycle “Won’t do to have my good work spoiled by the flu now will it” She said to no one in particular.

“Yes ma’am.” Helena walked over to another exam bed and got herself up on it with no help. So an improvement. She laid back, closed her eyes and hoped helping the captain down there hadn’t aggravated anything. She wasn’t hurting, maybe just a little more tired? Of course she had been sleeping soundly before getting up and rushing to make sure he came down here. She would just lay there until Grey was ready for her.
Laursen, pilot
He sat on the biobed when the doctor nudged him onto it. He remained slouched forward. His stomach hurt too much to want to lay back. “I’m not sure where I picked something up, but I must have.” He said miserably.

As Rachel scanned the Captain she used her right foot to open a nearby cabinet, balancing carefully on her left with barely any sway, and rummaged a little before removing a small bucket that she dragged towards the bed “Bucket” the doctor said as she used her free hand to remove the bucket from her foot and placed it on the foot of the bed in front of Renault “You don’t think it’s food-related?” She asked as she waved her scanner around slowly “Either indigestion or food poisoning?”
Dr. Grey - CMO
Marceau shook his head, “Have you had anyone else with nausea, stomach cramping, a fever, and general malaise and soreness? If it were food poisoning I wouldn’t be the only one sick. I… Ugh.” His stomach cramping got worse and he groaned and reached for the bucket at the end of the bed. When he leaned over it, he heaved into it, the smell of sick filling the room.
Rachel gave the Captain a flat look “Woulnd’t be the only one he says at five in the morning” She muttered nowhere near a whisper. Her nose wrinkled momentarily as the smell hit her but she quickly disregarded the distasteful scent.
His scans showed no signs of food poisoning or indigestion, but neither did it find a viral or bacterial infection. Instead, the scan showed high concentrations of stress hormones and other bodily signs of high stress. The stress was making him physically ill.

Once she’d finished her readings she pocketed the scanner, walked to another cabinet and grabbed another sick bucket, and exchanged it with the filled on the Captain’s bed. She then walked further into the small medical bay, the sound of running water could be heard followed by a curse then the spilling of water, and again a yet longer running of water. Rachel returned with a glass of water and placed it on the table next to the Captain “Drink this, slow sips” She produced a pill box from her coat and put it next to the glass “Well good news, Sir, you do not have an infection or the flu” she explained calmly then pointed at the pills “Antacids to help settle your stomach acids for the short term.”
Rachel crossed her arms under her chest and put on a pensive frown “Downside is that this won’t be easily treated, your cortisol levels are through the proverbial roof. Far as I can tell these cramps are the result of extreme levels of stress” She spoke in a level tone, her face blank if mixed with some professional sympathy, something Renault would recognize as a trained response “We’ll need to have a serious discussion regarding how to curtail that but it can wait until you have had some time to recover”
