“What are you looking for? A new and improved pooper scooper for Nessa?” came the voice of Mark Sayers, his bunkmate and science geek who was now in his natural habitat.

“Guess it’s a lost cause to think the CSO would be here. She’d likely be on the bridge?” He paused. “I found something.”

“Something,” Mark said then leaned in. “You look pale,” then, “What happened?”

“We were, uh, Nessa and I, in the cargo bay. Nessa found something in a duct. I saw it. All six legs. It ran off.”

“Six legs?” he asked, inching toward what was a stool as though to be ready to hop on it at the least sound. “And?”

Rick looked away trying to remember the startling sight. “Six legs. Bigger than a rat. If it had fur it was pretty short but I only saw it for a second and then it was gone.”

As unobtrusively as possible Mark hopped up onto the table to sit, his legs dangling. “And?”

“That’s it. Earth doesn’t have anything like that, does it?”

“Not the way you are describing.” He looked about. “The chief may be by soon.”

  • Mark and Rick, both PO’s

“The chief is down on the planet,” Eric said as poked his head into the room. He had been walking past when he heard them talking. “And so is Lt Locke. Something I could help you with?”

OOC: Bump again!

OOC: Boy, miss a weekend, miss a lot ..

Mark, a Petty Officer himself, tried to look casual but alert as the Lt came along, hopping down from the table but not without a quick glance at under the table. “Oh, Sir, Rick, er Petty Officer Walters, has some across .. something ..” He gestured to Rick.

“Sir,” Rick said, then his expression mixed from thoughtful to nervous. “I’m pretty sure I saw something .. strange. I was in the cargo bay when the sergeant, ah, the dog, sensed something. When I went to look into a ventilation shaft I saw something for a moment. Looked rat like, um, not sure if it had hair but it had six legs. I’m sorry, that threw me off on noticing more. That and the teeth. A bit .. snaggletoothed.” He looked down to the floor. Mark followed his glance, looking about nervously.

“I’ve never seen anything like it. I mean we launched from Earth. Earth doesn’t have anything with six legs!” Mark was about to say something relating to insects but thought otherwise. Mark just looked at the Lt and shrugged and gestured that he didn’t have a clue either.

Mark and Rick

“Oh there are some insects on Earth that have 6 legs. But that doesn’t mean it couldn’t have come from another planet. It’s called interplanetary commerce,” Eric said with a grin.

“But we just launched. The paint isn’t even dry on this ship,” Rick said. “Where could something .. alien .. come from? Though, well, it must be, but is it going to eat us all?” Mark took another side step closer to a tabletop.

“But there should have been a bio sweep of everything before it’s was allowed on the ship. Sure you weren’t imagining something down in the ducts? It’s easy to get turned around and see just shadows.”

Lt Eric - Wandering Science Officer

That caused him some pause, then Rick shook his head. “No, sir. Nessa sniffed it out first. We weren’t in the ducts but looking in through the vent. I did see something and .. there were some bones of something else there and heard the skittering, you know, like claws on metal. You want to come and see? My scanner has the engineering module and is limited for what it will pick up.”
- Rick and Mark

Eric tapped his chin. “Well I wouldn’t expect that it would eat us, typically they would be scared off by our size. You know, going after a meal that is more of a sure bet. But I would expect that it was hibernating in one of the many crates we received before leaving dry dock. I’m sure not all of those originated from Earth.”

Looking over at the clock on the wall, Eric noted that he still had another hour on his shift. Plus a little bit of exploration would be a nice change of pace, he was stuck still trying to organize and label all of the supplies that had been sent up right before they left Earth.

“Why not, let’s see what our little stowaway might be.” Opening one of the drawers along the wall, Eric pulled a scanner out. “Lead the way.”
