(snip)
A few days later, Helena had the time. And wasn’t feeling like getting through a shift was all she could manage, she headed for D deck and the MACO area. She approached their common area, glancing about for Nessa. She didn’t know if they had taken over her care or she was still with one of the engineers. Either way she didn’t relish encountering her unawares. She rapped crisply on the framing around the door.

Laursen, pilot

A relatively small, dark-skinned man with dark almond eyes and jet black hair answered the door. He was dressed in MACO working uniform and stood at-ease in the doorway. “May I help you?” he asked softly, a noticeable but unfamiliar accent thick on his words.

MACO

Helena smiled, she always smiled, and took in the man, placing the person with the crew roster. “Staff Sergeant Tiwari? I’m Lt Laursen. I was looking for Sergeant Kristensen if she’s not busy at the moment.”

Laursen, pilot

He looked at her a moment and then simply stepped aside and pointed.

“Thank you,” Helena stepped through the door and in the direction the man pointed.

The hulking figure of Kristensen was across the room. She was laying in a hammock and reading something.

MACO

Helena stopped next to the hammock, and wondered how she’d ever keep up with the woman. “Sgt Kristensen, Lt Laursen. I was looking for an exercise partner and was told you would be the one to ask.”

Laursen, pilot

Kristensen’s eyes flicked up, assessed the Helm officer in a glance, and then went back to her reading. “You were ‘told, eh?” she asked, her voice heavy with a Scandinavian accent. “And just who told you dis?”

MACO

“Captain Baumann.” It always amazed Helena that she could identify most accents, if she had heard it before, but she had no knack for languages. Helena’s own accent was Icelandic but not nearly as heavy as Kristensen’s.

Laursen, pilot

The big woman’s head turned sharply to look at her and her eyes narrowed. “And just why would the Captain say dis?” She rose slowly to her feet. It was amazing that, laying down, she seemed very large and well-muscled… but standing she was positively intimidating.

MACO

The woman was huge, but Helena wasn’t scared. She had no reason to be. Then again Helena had worked with Marines before, not a MACO squad though. “We were both in the gym the other day, he gave me a few pointers, suggested I find a partner that would push me help keep me accountable, and we worked for a couple of hours. He said if I was looking for a permenant partner to ask you. Other than that I can’t speak for his motives.”

Lt Laursen, pilot

Kristensen shrugged and said “Very well. I will not stand in the way of someone wanting to better themselves. Tell me, what is it you wish to accomplish? More muscle? More stamina? More everyting?” and she chuckled. Tiwari cleared his throat softly and Kristensen nodded. “No disrespect intended, ma’am.” she said to Laursen.

MACO

Helena laughed, “None taken.” She tossed a grin at Tiwari. “I don’t offend easily.” She turned back to Kristensen, “Mostly I am looking to maintain and then rebuild my stamina. I got sick a few years ago and it caused permenant damage to the skeletal muscles.” Helena wasn’t going to fill Kristensen’s time with the whole long story. She would if the woman asked. She told her that much only because there would be days medical would order her to rest even if she didn’t want to, and violating a medical order would get her grounded just as fast.

Laursen, pilot

The giant Norwegian woman nodded and said “Alright. In that case, meet me at the gym tomorrow at 0400. We will assess where you are and then go from there. You will work out with me three days per week, three days on your own. One day you rest. After we work out in the gym the first day, you will come here to exercise and train. Yes, you will be training. MACO hand-to-hand combat. That is the price you pay for my help. You will be my sparring partner.”

MACO

Helena was going to die. It was going to suck. She had no doubt about that. If the sparing or exercise didn’t kill her, Dr Grey would skin her alive, and Renault....well there was no telling what he would do. She was going to die, and she was laughing about it because it would be fun. “I can do that as long as we are done by 0600 for my shift.”

Laursen, pilot
