Once the group had reached the nearest cave entrance they found it was about 5ft or so in height and about roughly 8ft wide. Thankfully the low entrance rose up to 8ft from floor to ceiling once they ducked under the mouth area to the inner chamber after 3-4 ft letting them all stand to their full height. The inner cavern area was roughly a natural kind of oval/figure eight pattern in shape. At the northern west end about 50ft away was a tunnel that seemed to lead in a slopping curve deeper into the surface. Straight ahead at the top of the figure eight was a slopping tunnel which was about 11ft wide and 6ft high which would lead after another 100 or so feet to a much larger chamber of some kind which showed signs of an underground stream.

When Naomi ducked past the entrance, she lifted upright. Her eyes brushed upward to spot the stalactites looming over like jagged teeth. It was the first confirmation that running water had carved out this place. The next was the rumbling from a stream ahead. It echoed through the wide space, the walls catching any sound to vibrate back. Giving her back a break, she leaned her heavy pack against the base of a stalagmite.

“So, we using the buddy system? If so, who am I paired with?” She glanced to the others.

Hutchins grinned at her and said “I’ll be happy ta be your buddy, L-T.” and he began to move towards her when a throat clearing from the MACO Sergeant and a look of incoming pain halted him and he said “Uh, yeah… sorry about that, Ma’am.” to Locke.

Helena sketched out the cave just past the entrance, she moved around the edge, watching where she stepped and taking some initial measurements from the two tunnels that branched off. Further back into the cave the light from the entrance started to fade, or at least enough for her to notice while she tried to write. She reached into per pack and pulled out a head lamps and slipped it over her head and turned it on low and glanced up at the ceiling.

At Hutchins attempt at humor, Naomi turned and locked eyes with him. Her right eyebrow arched. Now, she liked a good tease now and then. Sadly, they were both on duty and last thing she wanted was trouble. Besides, only her friends got to make cute, cheeky nicknames. If there had been some nearby bat excrement nearby, she would’ve shoved him in it.

Instead, she smiled.

“Only my friends can give me nicknames, Corporal. Just Locke for now. For that cheekiness, you owe me a favor and I’ll be collecting at a later time.” Her voice held a matter of fact that indicated she wasn’t taking no for answer.

She followed after Helena, waving her hand for Hutchins to join her.

Rachel, who had been absentmindedly staring at a rock she’d picked up. Well she was using her hand scanner and focusing most of he brainpower on keeping an eye on the team’s vital signs and any potential life signs. It took her a few secons to register the conversation. When Locke went forward she sped up slightly to walk next to the Scientist “You are aware that L-T is your rank not technically a nickname, MACO’s still hold to the archaic military fashions of old Earth” She said in her usual absentminded professorial tone, unaware of any potential social taboo’s she might be breaking.

Hutchins looked confused for a moment and then shook his head. “Fleeters…” he mumbled under his breath and began following the team into the tunnels.

At the fore, Kristensen smiled in the semi-darkness and hefted her weapon slightly. Hutchins was always a smart-ass, but if that Lieutenant wasn’t careful, she’d learn the hard way that Hutchins was a con artist of no small skill.

OOC: Please let me know which exact tunnel you’re taking or who’s splitting up in what ways to go multiple paths....

Seeing ahead, Ensign Sanks noticed that the cave was splitting into two paths, he turned toward Kristensen. “So the path is splitting up ahead, I can take a team on the right and you can take a team and go left, unless you have a better suggestion?” He proposed, not really just to her, but the group as a whole.

Kristensen shook her head. “I’d recommend not splitting our personnel, sir. But that is up to your ranking officer.” Hutchins nodded in agreement, but said “But if y’all decide to do just that, we’ll split up. One of us with each group.”

MACO

“Non, I agree. No splitting up.” Marceau said, nodding to the MACOs. “We have several days to survey, I see no reason to risk splitting up to rush. Let’s check the water tunnel first, then the larger tunnel tomorrow.” He waved the MACO ahead. “Then we can spend all day exploring deeper and getting the mineral samples.”

Helena nodded making her way to the tunnel entrance at the north end of the cave. She stood back from the rest of the group as she took scans and sketched out the 11ft wide and 6ft high entrance, and then the 100 or so feet to the much larger chamber. This she left blank on the paper until she could see more.

Then she fell in with the rest at the back of the group.
