In the morning, there was a message awaiting Lt Kelleher from Reginald Green.

Opening it up the Chief would find a 12 hour shift assignment schedule, pending approval for the Engineering crew. It went as follows:

“Alright, good work Green,” Logan said to himself as he looked over the group and marking the proposed roster for discussion with Green later. For now, he noted the team members in Alpha shift, and began to pen in snap interviews for the day around the scheduled work that had been posted.

“Fawkes, Morales, Clark. Serinde,” he began the list. Following the Alpha shift, Kelleher would sit down with Beta shift minus Green, then round up everything with a meeting with Green at the end. The current duty roster wasn’t this one of course, but it would serve as a random seeming starting point.

Fawkes was as good as any to start with, he had had a slightly longer than brief interaction with the man. Turning to the side, Logan paused and sighed. He would need to requisition one of the portable coffee machines from supplies to complete the small box that served as his Office.

Turning back to the work station Logan mapped out a schedule for Alpha shift meetings, placing the individual meetings at a point of the day when the team member was in the Engine Room and not scheduled to be out on a task around the ship. Having done that, Logan posted the schedule on Alpha Shifts duty list for the day so they could all see it, stood and walked to the door.

Stepping out, he almost immediately saw Fawkes at his station so walked over to him. “Petty Officer Fawkes,” Logan said more casually than the words sounded, “If you have a moment, I want to take a moment of your time. In my office, if you please.”

By observation, Kelleher would note that Fawkes was immersed in what he was doing, which looked to be plotting out ventilation ducts on the ship schematic and dividing them into different color-coded areas. However, it was not a usual ‘immersed’ - something was lacking. He held a kind of quiet competency but without a sense of ‘military’ urgency. At the call of his name, Fawkes made one last adjustment, saying, “Chief,” in reply. Then, turning his head, grey eyes fell on Kelleher. “Of course,” he said, the British tone light with a hint of curiosity. With a casual tap Fawkes saved the work and closed the file. He cut a trim line in his uniform, but at a glance he would more aptly be placed on a beach somewhere or adorning an advertising page.

Logan said nothing as they stepped through the door, just took the few steps to his desk before looking back at Fawkes. “Close the door if you will, Fawkes. I’m taking the opportunity before we get to our first area of operations to get to know my team a little more, and you’re the first.” Smiling, Logan indicated the chair in front of his desk for the man to take a seat. “That has pros and cons of course, the pro being you get this out of the way early, the con being I haven’t had time to install anything in the way of a machine to provide Tea or Coffee. Priorities first as it is.”

Lightly tapping the door sensor he watched as it slid shut. Compared to Logan’s bulk, Emerson was youthfully trim, even at 29. His sandy brown hair looked like it took effort to be set in place as it was, parted in the middle. It looked like hair that would do what it wanted without effort. Sitting down he replied, “Perhaps one day someone will design a unit which is built into each office that can provide such necessities,” Emerson said as he slid into the offered seat. He was nonplussed about being first; in fact by a tip of his head it almost seemed that his being first was something anticipated.

Taking a seat in his own chair, Logan pulled a PaDD across to him and open the page for Fawkes’ file.

Lt Kelleher, CE

Fawkes’ file was full of notes. Fawkes had entered the military academy at the age of 18 with impressive patronage, including Lord Alfred Burnaby, a noted member of the British House of Lords and an outspoken proponent of increasing the Terran presence into space. The first year of the Academy was general before being placed in a particular program. The record indicated that Fawkes had first chosen Infantry or MACO specialization, with a further specialization as sniper. This was altered in his third year to Navy and Engineering. By the way the record was noted it seemed that there had been ‘influence’ in his discipline choices. In fact in the final year of his Academy training Fawkes opted out of the Officer training program and transferred instead to the general ranks. As well, by the look of his record, his birthday was coming up, his 30th, on December 23rd.

His career path was as follows:

2142 – Graduated with Honors, British Royal Space Marine Academy, Portsmouth, UK with specialization in power engineering and sensor technologies. He carried a marksman’s merit and honors in three separate medals in marathon running against other Academies. Graduation rank Seaman Second Class. While it typically is Third Class after a graduation there did appear to be some influence behind the scenes while intermixed with his various specializations.

2142-2144 – Assigned to SS Wellington, an In-System troop patrol ship under Whitby, Harold, Lt. He was assigned as a military engineer with dual role – power subsystem management and field engineer supporting an infantry unit. While ‘engagement’ was limited, Emerson saw action in a mining strike turned rebellion on Io, and suppressing a separatist movement on Mars. Field promotion to Seaman First Class in the engagement on Io, and a further promotion to Petty Officer after passing qualifying exams in early 2144.

2144-2147 – Transfer to SS Churchill, an older escort light cruiser under Kagasu, Hirohito, Lt. He was assigned as a crew chief, first of a power relay group and second of damage control engineering squad. The Churchill, an escort ship, principally did inter system escorts with important civilian or diplomatic persons or, more frequently, trading vessels. While mostly peaceful, there was a ‘reported’ Pirate attack on a trading convoy of which the Churchill was an escort in 2147. Commendation noted for Fawkes for bravery in damage control and putting out a serious ship threatening plasma fire near the Cochrane engines and instrumental at keeping the ship together until reaching Earth where it was decommissioned. Unfortunately, Lt Kagasu was killed in the battle. Was promoted after this to Petty Officer 2 ranking.

2147-2149 – Transfer to SS Bonaventure, rank Petty Officer 2, (can’t remember the CE name!!! Argh!!), serving as shift power engineering specialist and sensor engineer. While the Bonaventure was unremarkable in the sense of it being a close-range vessel, and even older than the Churchill, it enabled Fawkes to test and explore ship systems to optimize power regulation until its eventual decommissioning in 2149. Promoted in 2148 to Petty Officer 3.

2149 – Transfer to SS Sojourner, rank Petty Officer 3 under Kelleher, Logan, Lt. No further entries. Notation that Fawkes has been undertaking course improvements in his specializations and, pending performance review, may qualify for a promotion to Chief Petty Officer.
