As Rick and Nessa got to the arboretum, he would find it was as many of the science labs a bit small in scale. While slightly larger in scope to contain plants and such studies, it was not planted with grass say on the floor or such. Still the air in here was much fresher due to the plants and over in one corner of the lab by a small 8x8 ft area a patch of grass and flowers had been setup for the scientists to experiment with. Nessa obviously in urgent need of doing her business yipped and ran over to the corner soon hunching over and letting loose before anyone could stop her.

‘And not a moment too soon,’ Rick thought. Some of Barb’s stories said they had to walk their dog a long time before getting ‘results’ as they said. They apparently got lucky that way. He rubbed his face in thought .. freezing as a voice rang out. The ‘yard’ was not that big but at least it was there. Would it be big enough?

NE Bickers the only science member present in the lab looked up when the yip then slight smell of fresh dog doo doo reached his nose. Frowning he looked at Rick in displeasure, “..I do hope you plan to clean that up?” he asked. Nessa meanwhile having finished sniffed about the area then done with her business returned dutifully to Rick’s side looking up at him with her tongue lolling out on her right side.

Rick’s first sense was to look around to see who Bickers, whom he had not met yet, was talking to. He was a Petty Officer and not in the ‘sir’ zone. Who was this fellow? Was he an officer, crewman, civilian gardener? His head turned back to see Bickers. The question was valid, he supposed, but quite unexpected. Rick had to admit that he had thought Nessa was going to do, well, the other one with the way she was dancing. Nervously rubbing a finger under his nose in part from a reaction to the odor he first knelt down to pat Nessa. “Good girl,” he said, petting her flank. Was there something in the ‘kit’ that came with the sergeant that related to picking up said .. things? He couldn’t remember offhand. There was so much in there.

“Uh, yes,” he began, but then fell back in the old ‘pull rank’ trope. “Captain said to look after things. Seems like the sergeant here,” he said, patting Nessa again, “was mailed to the wrong ship.” Right, he was babbling. “I’ll get this tidied up. I’m PO Rick Walters by the way.” Glancing at the ‘pile’ he let out a breath in a sigh. Still kneeling, he glanced about. If this was a science lab place surely there would be sample bags. That should do the trick until he got things sorted otherwise. He’d have to find someone in science to talk to about this need. Best to come to this in a spirit of unity than butt heads. “Who can I talk to in your group about arranging to uh, share the space?” he asked Bickers.

  • PO Rick Walters

”..You’ll have to talk to Commander Grace..” He said watching as the PO Walters picked up the doggie doo.

When Naomi typed the last of her data into her device, she slowly pushed back upright. Suddenly a repugnant stench invaded her nose causing her nose to wrinkle. Her eyes turned to the left and witnessed a spaniel promptly leave its mark on one of the grass plots. Despite the foul odor, the sight of the canine brought a smile to her lips. Casually she walked up the group for a better idea of the situation. She didn’t approach the spaniel, she knew better than that. Some dogs were timider than others and immediate movements triggered their defensive side.

“So, what’s the dog’s name?” Naomi already had a plastic bag in her hand and offered it to Walters.

“Thank you ma’am,” Rick said. That helped him to not have to go looking. More and more he felt out of his depth on this shift but he was determined to not show it if he could help it and to ride that storm. Right now the ‘storm’ was a brown eyed furry lady probably judging him on his ability here. Taking the bag he knelt down, knowing he was being watched. “Sergeant Nessa,” he said, sizing up the ‘pile’ and the bag and trying to recall how this was quite done from his limited experience. “She was an accident. Meant to be loaded to go to Mars for further training with the MACO’s but wound up here. We found her in the cargo bay.” At last he kinda got it with reversing the bag to scoop it up. It was .. squishy and softer than he had thought. “Eww,” he said, making a face as he worked to fix that error, finally getting it.

“Also, a tip from a dog owner, always have a supply of small bags on your person. Dogs don’t have a sense of time or understanding of convenience.”

-Lt. Naomi D. Locke, Sci

Taking the ‘prize’ Rick, still on one knee, carefully tied off the top of the bag, blinking and making a face as some of the pungent mass assailed his nose. “Good advice, ma’am. Bit of a rookie on this with getting surprised by this bundle of furry joy.” Reaching out he ruffled her neck and head. “Good girl.” Then to Naomi, he said, “She has a list of commands she knows longer than some of my engineering manuals. But she is here now and we’ll have to work on how to fit her in here. Captain already knows about her. He met the sergeant by the cargo bay and told us - ah, Ensign Gagarin and I. Seems the Captain was awake too.” Maybe there ‘was’ something about officers being vampires. Many of them seemed to be up in the middle of the night. He was happy to just be a lowly petty officer in that case. Unlike other officers, Rick felt more relaxed with Naomi. Maybe it was the way she carried herself - not uptight or formal like and she had enough curves to not give the Sergeant Rock look that a lot of officers seemed to project. Well, maybe not Sasha Gagarin. He was more of a boy just out of the sandbox. Rick, my contrast, projected a pretty uninhibited ‘country boy’ manner. He seemed of an age to Naomi which helped. He moved away a bit and gestured to her. “Nessa is pretty friendly and on duty even if she just did, ah, her duty.”
