His thoughts were interrupted by the Chief bringing things back to the present. “Aye, Sir. Thank you, Chief.” He turned to the others. “Shift leaders, conduct your orientation tours. Beta Shift. Chief Petty Officer Seifu. Take our group and I’ll catch you up. Start at D Deck engineering and make your way forward to Astrometrics. Everyone, this is a familiarity tour with where everything is. Once we are underway you will have plenty of time to find out what is behind every bulkhead and deck plate. For now I want you to be able to know where that bulkhead is if need be.” He paused for a moment. “Dismissed.”

As the teams split up to cover the ship Reggie joined the Chief. “I look forward to serving with you, Chief. We’ve got a few new people and a number transferred from the Bonaventure.” He glanced around him. “I’ve never served on a new ship before.” In his baritone voice there was a touch of awe, and another touch of apprehension. To Kelleher, Green’s appearance would remind him of a dark haired, square bearded Norwegian officer that might be seen in old photographs. “What can I do for you, Chief?”
- NL Reggie Green

“Likewise, Lieutenant. A new ship brings plenty of opportunity to test our latest developed tech and systems, I’m glad to have someone with your experience here.” Logan smiled as he spoke, but his eyes didn’t leave Greens’ face. “I’ve gone over the shift allocations you’ve submitted, I was tempted to run two shifts doing twelve on and twelve off with some on standby in case we need extra hands considering our relatively small team. You believe we can manage with three shifts and lower numbers? You have the most recent ship board experience and know most of the team already, so I value your opinion.”

Reggie’s expression did not change much in this short discourse. Logan would see a brightening in his features at the praise followed by a thoughtful narrowing of the eyes and a slight tightening of his lips. “This is a Navy ship, Chief. We’re all on standby. There’s not enough of us to put people aside and still effectively make two shifts. Two shifts would give us a couple more on each shift. Seven decks. Old Bonnie only had four. A couple extra hands each shift would relieve the pressure and we’re not spread so thin. Two officers on each shift, three sailors, mix of Petty Officers with a rotating day off in the team.” Inwardly Green liked an 8 hour shift but this would soothe his worry about too few on a shift to cover issues.

Nodding as Green spoke, Logan paused and looked up at him with, perhaps, a small curl at the edges of his mouth. “This is a Starfleet ship, Lieutenant. We don’t get days off.” Logan played on Reggies own statement that they were always on standby and was able to keep a straight face for a moment before grinning but, it was then that Logan turned his head and looked to the door where the Engineers had departed. His grin faded. “We seem to be missing one of our Ensigns? The name eludes me but I’m sure we are supposed to have another Engineer on hand?”

Reggie opened his mouth to say something, a quick reaction, but then closed it again. He had a number of regulations that came immediately to mind relating to occupational health and safety, psychological safety, work hours in a non combat setting and so on. How was he to broach that topic .. then, suddenly he grinned and Reggie let out a breath he had been holding and said, “Indeed,” before turning his head to follow the Chief’s gaze. The ‘indeed’ took in both statements, the latter of which was a thorn in his side. Serinde had potential but she had almost no experience and was socially awkward. It was like she had so little socialization. Everything about her was regimented. She could think on her feet and problem solve but not do chit chat. He remembered her saying that the British Military Academy that she attended was easy. He had heard about it and talked to others who had been there and it was a grueling boot camp. But she had a stubborn streak.

Green’s face darkened. “Yes, Serinde. Elemirre Serinde. I’ve known her for a few months on the Bonaventure. She’s bright. Likeable. Quiet. Keeps to herself. Don’t try to play cards with her. She picks up games fast. And she is late.” He glanced at a nearby chronometer on the wall. “Very. I detailed her and Gamma shift to decommission the Bonaventure and report to the muster here for 9. She sent her team back early to get some rest and she stayed behind to finish. Just before the meeting I talked to the Station security and they confirmed the Bonaventure is empty. Port authority has no record of her name on any shuttle manifest. And she’s not answering her comms. I gave her the decommission for her to redeem herself as she was late for the crew muster to begin with. I .. don’t know where she is. Station security is looking for her.”

Letting out a slow breath, Logan rubbed a hand over his jaw. “Alright, Serinde. One down without word and we are about to get underway. Lets hope our errant Ensign shows up, we don’t have time to put the brakes on for one Engineer. Keep me informed should you hear any updates and in the mean time, I’m going to inspect my Engine Room. I believe that Captain Renault intends to hold a briefing for the Bridge crew and Senior Staff at 1100 hours, so I want everyone back here and at their stations at 1030 hours so we can run our final system checks before we begin our countdown to getting underway. That will be approximately 1400 hours so we have a tight schedule. Lets see what this team can do, shall we? If we need further Orientation details, we will make it happen. You are dismissed, Lieutenant. You better catch up with your detail.”

Lt Kelleher, CE

“I’ll alert you when she comes aboard or hear anything,” Reggie confirmed. He mentally calculated the time. That gives the troops an hour for a quick orientation. It was not as long as he had hoped but it would at least let them know where the latrines were. “10:30. I’ll herd the cats and detail them to stations, rotating them out in pairs to grab a quick lunch. With all hands on, we’ll have extras so can do that. Would you like me to plot out a possible 12hr shift rotation schedule?” He paused for a moment. “Will you be conducting individual interviews with the sailors, Chief?”
NL Green

“Draw up a possible 12 hour schedule including days off for the team, we can sit down and go over the idea and either adopt it or file it for later but I’d like to have it as an option, along with who in each team would work best.” Logan didn’t have an issue with the three, eight hour shifts that Green had already planned but at this stage he wanted to be able to say they looked at their options thoroughly. “Informal interviews,” he confirmed. “They’ve already been assigned to the ship so they don’t have to worry that they are being evaluated by me already, but I will sit down and talk to each one so I can get a feel for who they are. By the sounds of things we’ll have time to do them on the way to our mission area. I’m going to have small teams carry out post-launch checks on systems as we go so they will all have plenty of time to familiarize themselves with the ship.”

OOC: Googled how the navy works for shifts … interesting …
IC:

“Will do, Chief,” Green said, then smiled. “In the old days they ran shifts like that on the surface vessels. It’ll do them good. I’ll work in a couple of days where we don’t have extra training or drills to do so it’s a break for them. I had a very quick look at the commissioning logs and it all looks good on the screen. With any luck we will have it smooth sailing to Wolf 359 and lots of time to crawl about the ship with no emergencies. Seven decks. Amazing.” He looked at the massive engine. “I’ll work at the schedule and submit it by the morning. I don’t know everyone just yet so it will be a bit of a guess on dynamics but we’ll make it work. They’re navy and here to do a job.” The chief didn’t say anything about Reggie working out a interview list. That would be the chief’s prerogative.

“She’s a piece of work alright, and until we launch those new ships that they got on the drawing board to take the new engine in development, these babies are the pride of the fleet. Faster, further and longer. It’s quite breathtaking what we can do these days.” Logan turned to look at the engine himself, leaving for a moment the official work needed to get them going and simply enjoying the sight with a fellow engineer.

“Think I’ve found it, Lt,” said PO Fawkes. Then he turned to see the two officers talking. “I beg your pardon sirs. It can wait.”
- NL Green, Eng

“No, it can’t,” Logan turned back and looked at the man but smiled lightly and beckoned him over. “What did you find? Fawkes, isn’t it? Tell me if I got your name wrong, a bunch of you have changed haircut since your file pictures.”

Lt Kelleher, CE

Emerson took the comment in stride; his hair parted in the middle stood him out from the rest of the lower class, as he saw them. Before boarding he had gotten his hair cut. Perhaps his file picture had him more straggly. Getting proper cuts on board a ship was not precisely easy and a manicure impossible. “Yes, Chief, thank you.” His mustache, however, had not changed from his file photo. He parted from the display. He glanced over to the display and collected his thoughts and wondering whether to give the long version or the short. He decided on the short.

“Pressure reading for the port side power distribution system was nudged into the yellow. Plasma pressure was just a tad low. No particular danger as you know, but for a possible sluggish reaction when power was needed for systems. Engine power is green. I believe I traced it to a relay coupling reading Junction F12. Pressure is good up to that. From there it branches and this one port branch read low from that junction.” He paused.

Green nodded. “I’ve seen that once before on a past ship, the Chicago. What do you make of it?” Green’s feeling was that Fawkes was capable and wanted to show him off. While the man showed a certain indifference to the job, he took it at a personal challenge to do the job. Reggie took it that it was probably because Emerson didn’t need to do the work but could just do things with his particularly wealthy family. But Emerson was close to a promotion from PO3 to a CPO position. Best see what he could do.

Fawkes’ expression held steady. If this was a test he wouldn’t back down from it. “Circuits at that junction - provided they’ve not changed configurations of them in this new design - control a baseline plasma pressure for each conduit and automatically control flow depending on the draw. There looks to be a large power need to sickbay right now, and one of the conduits shows a higher flow. Circuit at F12 looks to not be adequately compensating. It could be anything from a bad solder to the sensor to a programming glitch on routing. But it comes from F12.” His British accent, while similar to Reggie’s, sounded more cultured. “It hasn’t choked off the plasma entirely and may right itself under actual use. It is still something that needs looking at.”
Fawkes & Green

“Alright, grab your kit and do a diagnostic on that circuit. I want it checked before we hit launch and we either get it fixed or we compensate. No glitches during launch, can you handle that Fawkes?” Logan asked the man directly, there were other tasks that needed doing and checking but, this one was a good start at getting used to the ship and seeing who on his team could handle themselves without someone bigger watching over them.

Kelleher, CE

“Of course, Sir,” Fawkes said, tipping his head to each officer in turn. His tone carried confidence with a possible hint of assuming. The Chief had said to do it which was enough for him to not have to wait for any kind of formal dismissal, and he turned on a heel in the direction of the cabinetry that held kits and tools.
“Take Kohl with you,” Green said. “She needs the experience.”
There was a momentary pause in Fawkes’ stride, and in that moment said, “Sir,” before continuing.
As the petty officer turned the corner, Green said to the Chief. “Kohl is a good thinker. Likes to take things apart.” The two were worlds apart too in standing, utter opposites, but she was pretty new to starships - a recent transfer onto the Bonaventure then over to here. Between them they would get it. It was a minor fix. In the old days it would be tightening the bolts.
